This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 New York Film Festival. The Pitch: The Velvet Underground might have been the best American rock band of all time, and Todd Haynes has made a documentary about their relatively short but extremely influential career, which means covering not just core members Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison, and Moe Tucker, but collaborators and contemporaries like Nico, Andy Warhol, and Jonas Mekas. Started Shaking to That Fine, Fine Music: Todd Haynes obviously loves rock and roll, which makes it all the more impressive that he’s spent his career making movies about key figures in its history while avoiding the usual lionizing cliches. Starting with Superstar, his doll-acted Karen Carpenter biopic that’s not commercially available, and continuing wit...
The latest album from Brandi Carlile is here. In These Silent Days, the folk rocker’s seventh studio album, arrives today via Low Country Sound/Elektra. She recorded the full-length at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A alongside producers Dave Cobb and Shooter Jennings, as well as her longtime collaborators and bandmates Tim and Phil Hanseroth. In These Silent Days grapples with themes such as acceptance, loss, and faith, calling to mind the grandeur of classic songwriters like David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Elton John, and Joni Mitchell. “I never imagined that I’d feel so exposed and weird as an artist without the armor of a costume, the thrill of an applause and the platform of the sacred stage,” Carlile said of the album in a statement. “Despite all this, the songs flowed throu...

Blue Chips is a monthly rap column that highlights exceptional rising rappers. To read previous columns, click here. If you’ve watched televised sports since late May, you’ve heard Solemn Brigham rap. His energetic southern voice soundtracks a Gatorade commercial that runs more often than Sydney McLaughlin and the ad’s other athletes. Every rerun finds you anticipating the North Carolinian’s relaxed yet forceful slant rhymes from “Future Power Sources”: “I been on my get back, cop a bag slow / You would never see that, use the trap door.” Gatorade selected the song from 2020’s Marlowe 2, Brigham’s second album with producer and fellow North Carolinian L’Orange under the Marlowe moniker. Following the first air-date, he’s fielded countless calls and texts of support. Though appreciative...
HipHopWired Featured Video Source: NFL / Pepsi/Roc Nation The Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show is typically a huge event for television viewers, and next year’s lineup will feature some of the biggest names in Hip-Hop culture. The 2020 show will be headlined by Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige, and Kendrick Lamar. The aforementioned performers hardly need any introduction, most especially Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Eminem, all among the top-selling acts within the drama. The show is also something of a full circle moment for Slim Shady as he’s reunited with his Aftermath boss on the big stage after signing with the good doctor back in 1998. Of course, the Doggfather has a number of classics with the Compton OG and fans can expect them to run through their 1990s smash hits. Related St...
HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Derrick Salters/WENN.com / WENN Shaquille O’Neal was never really one to bite his tongue, so it shouldn’t really surprise anyone that he share his feelings about Kyrie Irving being a vaccine skeptic and says the Brooklyn Nets should cut ties with the controversial flat earther/point guard. During an interview on with Tiki and Tierney, Shaq Diesel said that he’d go to management and tell them to get Kyrie “up out of here” and “We can win with a two-punch and a great shooter and some rebounders like we got. Get his ass up out of here.” Well, we actually believe he’d do something like that. Luckily the Nets have KD and James Harden to move the team forward, but the NBA in 2021 does need a Big Three to compete for a title. Being that Kyrie isn’t vaccinated he...

Researchers might have figured out why you miss your festival neighbors so much. A new study conducted by the University of Kent called “I Get High With a Little Help From My Friends’ – How Raves Can Invoke Identity Fusion and Lasting Co-operation via Transformative Experiences” claims to explain this phenomenon scientifically. Researchers Martha Newson, Ragini Khurana, Freya Cazorla, and Valerie van Mulukom, focused on the “4Ds” of a concert: “dance, drums, sleep deprivation, and drugs.” They recruited fans of electronic music and active clubbers and asked them to share their concert experiences with them. They then ranked how much each of the “4Ds” applied to each participant in the situation and then asked about how th...
