JUDAS PRIEST guitarist Richie Faulkner reportedly underwent a “10-hour open-heart surgery” after suffering a “heart attack” following the band’s performance at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, Kentucky on Sunday (September 26). The British heavy metal legends announced on Monday (September 27) that they were postponing the remainder of their U.S. tour so that Faulkner could be treated for a heart condition. The following day, his girlfriend Mariah Lynch, daughter of former DOKKEN guitarist George Lynch, said that Richie was “stable and resting” after undergoing “major emergency heart surgery.” On Tuesday, TESLA guitarist Frank Hannon took to his Instagram to write: “Sending love and healing power to Richie Faulkner @fa...
BLINK-182 singer and bassist Mark Hoppus, who went public with his cancer diagnosis in June, has announced that he is cancer free. Two months ago, Hoppus confirmed that he was battling a blood disorder called stage 4-A diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the same type of cancer his mother previously beat. Hoppus completed chemotherapy treatment earlier this month, and he took to his Instagram earlier today (Wednesday, September 29) to write: “Just saw my oncologist and I’m cancer free!! “Thank you God and universe and friends and family and everyone who sent support and kindness and love. Still have to get scanned every six months and it’ll take until the end of the year to get back to normal but today is an amazing day and I feel so blessed.” The musician broke th...

In a new interview with Couch Riffs, former JUDAS PRIEST singer Tim “Ripper” Owens discussed the “cheesiness” factor that is present in much of the lyrical content in heavy metal, including in his new band KK’S PRIEST in which he is joined by fellow ex-PRIEST member K.K. Downing. “Sometimes I’ll go, ‘Ah, God. I’ve gotta sing that’ or ‘I’ve gotta do that.’ But you have to add that to it because you still have those people and we still listen to that stuff and we still do it,” he explained (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET). “JUDAS PRIEST, you look at that band, and not everybody in the band is in their 70s now, but there’s 70-something-year-old grown men up there in those leather outfits. And s...
Beyond the Boys’ Club is a monthly column from journalist and radio host Anne Erickson, focusing on women in the heavy music genres, as they offer their perspectives on the music industry and discuss their personal experiences. Erickson is also a music artist herself, recently releasing the song “Eternal Way” with Upon Wings. This month’s piece features an interview with Emily Armstrong of Dead Sara. Los Angeles rockers Dead Sara spent much of the lockdown period working on their Warner Records debut (and third album overall), the just-released Ain’t It Tragic. With recording sessions set to take place smack dab in the middle of the pandemic, the new album brought some challenges for the band, but it was nothing they couldn’t face head-on, as demonstrated in their triumphant new single, “H...
Earlier this year, Tamara Lindeman staked her claim in indie rock with Ignorance, her latest album as The Weather Station. Still reeling in its success, the folk musician has released a deluxe edition of the already-beloved record today via Fat Possum; physical copies will be available on November 19th. Ignorance (Deluxe) comes in a double-LP format that features the original tracklist, some stripped-down performances, and two brand-new tracks called “Look” and “Better Now.” “I wrote ‘Better Now’ in Banff, Alberta, in stolen moments as I was teaching songwriting and writing for myself,” Lindeman said in a statement. “It’s all just true; the mountains, the piano, the first line, the pain of being hurt and the joy of being alright anyways.” Furthermore, Lindeman writes: “Whene...
Mark Hoppus has announced he is cancer free. The Blink-182 member was diagnosed with 4-A diffuse large B-cell lymphoma earlier this year. After five months of chemotherapy, he completed treatment earlier this month. Now, Hoppus’ oncologist has determined that he is cancer free. “Thank you God and universe and friends and family and everyone who sent support and kindness and love,” Hoppus wrote in an Instagram post. “Still have to get scanned every six months and it’ll take until the end of the year to get back to normal but today is an amazing day and I feel so blessed.” Advertisement Related Video As he battled cancer, Hoppus received an outpouring of support from the music community, including from his former Blink-182 bandmate Tom DeLonge. A judge has suspended Jamie Spears as the conservator of his daughter Britney Spears’ estate, effectively ending his 13-year reign controlling every aspect of Britney’s life and career. During the hearing, which some fans and #FreeBritney supporters hoped would be the singer’s last, Judge Brenda Penny essentially had three options: end Spears’ conservatorship altogether, suspend Jamie and appoint a temporarily successor, or deny any changes to the arrangement and continue with the status quo. “The current situation is not tenable,” Judge Penny ruled, adding that Jamie’s suspension was “in the best interest of the conservatee.” Advertisement Related Video In addition, TMZ reports that Jamie must turn over all books and records associated with the conservatorship. To that point, Britney’s la...
The past year and a half has been quite prolific for Josh Klinghoffer. Departing Red Hot Chili Peppers in December 2019 could have derailed him, but Klinghoffer has been on a tear ever since. Even during the pandemic, Klinghoffer was busy working on his own music as Pluralone in addition to joining Pearl Jam as a touring member and as a guitarist in Eddie Vedder’s new band, which debuted at Ohana Festival last Friday. Ahead of his first live Pluralone performance, Klinghoffer has a pair of new songs to share titled “Across the Park” and “Sevens.” “Once again, the way the ball bounces, as they say, these songs were the last ones from the I Don’t Feel Well period,” Klinghoffer told SPIN via email. “‘Across The Park’ is a song about a famous relationship gone horrendously wrong. Life never st...
Bob Mould and Fred Armisen performed the Hüsker Dü hit “I Apologize” at this year’s Hardly Strictly Business festival. The rocker and comedian duo blasted right into their performance, alone with their guitars playing to an empty venue. Like two classic rock-loving dads practicing in a garage, Mould and Armisen’s passion for music carried their performance, making it a remarkable, intimate jam session. “I was thrilled when the Hardly Strictly folks asked me to perform for this year’s online series,” Mould said in a statement. “They wondered if I had a colleague who might be able to help out on a few songs, and I immediately thought of my good friend, Fred Armisen — he wrote the foreword for Distortion — and fortunately he was available on ‘tape day.’ Fred drove up from Los Angeles, we rehe...
Even rockers lend one another a helping hand in a time of need. And it’s no surprise that Dave Grohl literally lent his throne to Seattle metal bassist Darin Wall. Wall is recovering from a gunshot wound that occurred when he stopped a gunman entering the band’s concert in early September. Wall and his band Greyhawk were set to perform, and he shoved 26-year-old Ethan Byrd, who attempted to enter the venue. Byrd shot Wall in the leg, and Wall had to rest for three weeks before returning to the stage. Grohl caught wind of the incident when Wall joked on a radio show about using the throne at an upcoming gig. “[Grohl] called me from the MTV VMA Awards and he said, ‘I’ll ship that throne up to you at my expense,” Wall told KING 5 News. Greyhawk performed again on September 26, and Wall used G...
Common has released the music video for his funk-tinged track “When We Move” featuring Black Thought and Seun Kuti, off of his new album A Beautiful Revolution Pt. 2. Filled with horns, drums and an uptempo beat, the song is a chant of hope and celebration of Black history. As the music video depicts a celebratory gathering with dancing from people of all ages, it champions the heart and soul of triumph through perseverance. “When we move, the whole world follows in our path,” says the song. As this line is spoken throughout the song, the music video alternates between the party and clips of important figures and moments in Black history. Specifically, the video showcases Muhammad Ali, Nelson Mandela, the Black Panther Party, Fela Kuti (Nigerian musician, activist and father of Seun Kuti) ...
