July 8, 20212:46 PM (PT)/5:46 PM (ET) “The Pixies name came about because it was going to be a challenge to make it good,” guitarist Joey Santiago explains over Zoom. “Because Pixies…that’s not a band. That’s not a rock ‘n roll name. Unless you know that they’re mischievous, that I liked. Now you could say that it’s a rock ‘n roll band, I guess…but you think ‘pixies’ it’s like a cute…it’s fucking… Tinkerbell.” While pixie folklore ranges across centuries and continents, it’s believed they originated in English fireside fables, linked to the faery family. Some are indeed downright evil, but for the most part, pixies are tiny tricksters who love to dance and sing in groups, especially at night. At first glance, they’re practically human, except for their immortality and ability to create mag...

The organizers of this weekend’s Rebel Rock festival in Orlando, Florida have announced the cancelation of the four-day event. Earlier today, they issued the following statement regarding the matter: “We are deeply and utterly devastated to announce the cancellation of this weekend’s Rebel Rock Festival. “After this week’s severe weather and despite our crew’s effort to improve the ground conditions around the Main Stage over the last three days, our venue partner has deemed the area unfit for artists, crews, vendors, and fans. We were able to get in the Taco Metal Party on Thursday by using the B-Main grounds while continuing to work on the conditions of the Main Stage grounds. The amount of water dropped this week simply proved to be too much to clear ...

Vinny racked up his fair share of firsts on tonight’s Double Shot at Love. Not only did he get up close and personal with Kortni’s nails (her polish, not press-ons) and her affinity for the p-word (not popcorn), he shared his first kiss of the season with one lucky lady. Exactly which one of the 17 women was the first to smooch “the chooch”? Akielia, the stunning small-town nurse from Moberly, Missouri. On night one, the two bonded over being homebodies, leading Akielia to feel an instant connection. “We both really like basketball, and we’re both really family-oriented. I’m really excited to get to know him more,” she said. Vinny was equally enthralled: “Akielia struck me from the first time I saw her. I mean, how could she not? ...
By Yasmine Shemesh About midway through Dear Evan Hansen, the film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical of the same name, Evan and his classmate, Alana, are sitting on swings in the park. Alana — from the outside, a cheerful overachiever involved in almost every extracurricular club at their high school — confides in Evan that she’s struggling, too. Like Evan, she is living with anxiety and depression. Like Evan, she is on medication for it. And like Evan, she feels alone and invisible. Over raw guitar strums, Alana sings softly, carefully, at first. “Do you ever look at all the people who seem to know exactly how to be? You think, they don’t need piles of prescriptions to function naturally.” She laughs nervously. The song, “The Anonymous Ones,” begins to swell into a triumphant de...

Heavy Consequence contributor Greg Prato is the author of several rock books, including 2009’s Grunge Is Dead: The Oral History of Seattle Rock Music. Here, Prato looks back at Nirvana’s groundbreaking 1991 album Nevermind on its 30th anniversary, sharing quotes from his aforementioned book. Few albums have played a major role in changing the direction of rock music. Not only did Nirvana’s Nevermind do just that, it also started a cultural revolution. Upon the release of Nevermind on September 24th, 1991, it seemed like almost immediately, hair metal was pronounced dead, as radio and MTV suddenly embraced likeminded bands hailing from the Seattle area. Beyond the music, young people began adopting “grunge fashion,” while also embracing the more progressive and introspective thinking ...
Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced a 2022 world tour, their first trek since reuniting with guitarist John Frusciante in 2019. Frusciante returned to the RHCP fold after the band fired his replacement, Josh Klinghoffer, after 10 years and two albums. The classic lineup has since confirmed they’re working on their first record together since 2010’s Stadium Arcadium. The Frusciante-featuring RHCP were meant to play a number of festivals last year, but something got in the way of those plans. They did manage to squeeze in one show pre-pandemic: a small memorial concert honoring filmmaker Andrew Burkle. Drummer Chad Smith wasn’t present for that gig, however, and was replaced by Jane’s Addiction’s Stephen Perkins, which makes this upcoming trek the first time the reformed lineup wi...
