Our Track by Track feature sees musicians revealing the stories and inspirations behind each song on their latest album. Today, Alex Ridha — a.k.a. Boys Noize — dissects his new album, +/- (Polarity). Berlin-based DJ Alex Ridha has released his fifth album as Boys Noize. +/-, pronounced “polarity,” today (September 24th). The record arrives via his own Boysnoize Recordings, and you can stream it below via Apple Music. For an artist like Ridha, who derives much of his influence from Berlin’s bustling club scene, the solitude of the pandemic offered an opportunity for him to fully embrace the different genres that inspire him. “The album dives into the polar tension between the musical styles and worlds I find myself in,” he tells Consequence in a statement. “When you combine opposites,...

How are things going for you since we last talked? We had our third break in at (my restaurant) Life on Mars. I now have an alarm. The funny thing about me not having an alarm, is that when I moved to Washington in 1991, I sold burglar alarms for three years. I know how shitty they can be with false alarms and everything, so I was like ‘I don’t want an alarm.’ But this time we had a pro job. They came in through the back door, got into the office, took our portable P.O.S. devices and multiple laptops. The other times people broke in, they didn’t get much. This time they got us bad. We’ve got insurance and all that but there is still a deductible. It’s not cheap. It is a pain the ass and I am still dealing w...
As a lyricist, Cobain had no scruples in expressing his honest feelings in his songs. His words about the human condition, isolation, acceptance, mental health and addiction remain strong touchstones of solace and insight that seem to resonate even more so with the children of Gen X than the Xers themselves. If only Kurt had lived long enough to see how much of a difference he made in the lives of people not even born when Nevermind was released, there’s no doubt he would have been glowing with pride. But Jesus wanted him for a sunbeam instead. In honor of Nevermind‘s 30th anniversary, we spoke with a wide swath of modern artists who were only babies or not yet born yet when Nirvana changed the course of rock n’ roll on Sept. 24, 1991. So long as the youth remain restless...
That mission statement remained front and center throughout the nearly three-hour ceremony/dinner during which emotions ran high. The Weeknd, co-recipient of The Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic support of various charities and organizations including COVID relief, Black Lives Matter and MusiCares, recalled the first time he met the industry icon. “He pulled up to one of my club gigs in Las Vegas; he’s one of the reasons why I started making music,” said the emotional singer, to whom Jones presented the award via videotape. “He said he’d wait for me to visit with fans first before we talked. He was teaching me the lesion that nothing is more important than people and giving back. This is the best award I’ve ever gotten in my life, I swear. I won’t take this for g...
Before her unexpected death 26 years ago, Selena Quintanilla’s career was just beginning to grow internationally, and her music clips started to conquer (at that time) major music video channels. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we gathered the clips that we all love and remember the Queen of Tejano, as she was called, because she single-handedly revolutionized the genre, fusing her Mexican roots with bold new sounds. With her brother A.B. Quintanilla, who produced her biggest hits, and her band Los Dinos, they made music on their own terms, adding a hint of pop and rock to the classic cumbia, mariachi, rancheras, and tejano rhythms. Born and raised in Texas, she managed to keep it classy and real. With her bedazzled bustiers and high-waisted pants, she was sexy but approacha...
