On a windy rooftop above Pier 17 of New York’s South Street Seaport—and approximately three and a half hours after the show’s advertised start time—the Fugees performed together for the first time in 15 years, presenting a colossal show taped to be aired as part of this weekend’s Global Citizen Festival. Billed as a pop-up show, it was far from that. With a pageantry rarely seen at a rap show, the set opened with the one-by-one emergence of a 20-piece mixed-style orchestra (14 horn players in formal attire, multiple guitarists, keyboardists, and bass players, backup singers, and a DJ), followed by Wyclef Jean, Pras Michel, and finally, Ms. Lauryn Hill, wearing a red-ruffled couture gown (which word is she designed). As an instrumental horn and key version of “The Score” led into “How Many ...
Tomorrow (September 24), the film adaptation of hit musical Dear Evan Hansen will finally hit theaters, and with it comes a brand-new song written specifically for the movie. That’s fairly common for Hollywood treatments of Broadway shows. But what makes Dear Evan Hansen‘s new tune, “The Anonymous Ones,” special is who co-wrote it (and who sings it in the film), as well as who sings it on the soundtrack. For the film, star Amandla Stenberg collaborated with original music writers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul to make “The Anonymous Ones” a real moment for her character, Alana. And in keeping with that, a new version of the track from SZA feels equally big. Her take on “The Anonymous Ones” comes complete with a new video that dropped today (Septe...
Migos‘ hip-hop style was memorialized on Wednesday at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles, where the Recording Academy revealed a new exhibit showcasing four ornate blazers worn by the Atlanta trio. The group took over the museum to host “A Conversation With Migos,” which was moderated by Billboard‘s Hip-Hop Editor Carl Lamarre in front of a live audience. Though Migos was presented with their own exhibit, the group has yet to actually take home a Grammy. In 2018, Migos received two nominations for Best Rap Album (Culture) and Best Rap Performance (“Bad and Boujee”), but Kendrick Lamar nabbed both titles, with DAMN. and “HUMBLE,” respectively. Migos is only the latest hip-hop act to be honored at the Grammy Museum — in 2015, 2Pac was given an exhibition titled “All Eyez on Me: ...
“I’d rather die before you die/ Before you die, before you die,” Indigo De Souza repeats hazily on her confessional song, “Die Cry.” The line is emblematic of the indie singer-songwriter’s work, which is full of obvious, dark truths. For De Souza, these frank moments of introspection and fearlessness are the backbone of her second album Any Shape You Take on August 27. Her goal? To make people unabashedly feel their feelings. “I think that we live in a society where we’re not allowed to take the time to feel things fully because it moves so fast and survival is so key,” De Souza says over the phone while walking near her home in the Asheville area. “People get much more caught up in survival than they do embodying the things they’re feeling.” Raised by a Brazilian Bossa Nova guitarist fath...
After releasing her version of “The Anonymous Ones” for the film adaptation of Dear Evan Hansen earlier this month, SZA has returned with an accompanying music video for the musical-inspired track. Directed by Colin Tilley, the visual opens as the Grammy-winning artist sits at the foot of her bed writing in her journal, before she leaves to hop on a public bus, where she sings solemnly out the window. Then taking to the streets, where the bus stop boasts a poster for Dear Evan Hansen, SZA finds herself lost in the chaos of strangers passing her by as she reaches the chorus. “Thе anonymous ones never lеt you see the hate they carry/All those anonymous ones never name the quiet pain they bury,” she sings. “Keep on keeping secrets that they think they have to hide/What if everybody’...
