Watch SLIPKNOT Perform At Chicago’s RIOT FEST

SLIPKNOT closed out Riot Fest, one of Chicago’s best independent homegrown events, at Douglass Park on Sunday (September 19). Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below. The Riot Fest show came two weeks after SLIPKNOT played its first concert in 18 months on September 4 at the Rocklahoma festival in Pryor, Oklahoma. The gig marked the debut of SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor‘s new mask, which he had been working on for the past few months. This past May, Taylor spoke to Andy Hall of the Des Moines, Iowa radio station Lazer 103.3 about the evolution of SLIPKNOT‘s masks and what fans can expect to see during the band’s current touring cycle. “The mask has been a part of us forever,” he said. “The mask is king. And for us, especiall...

Watch Lil Nas X Perform a Dark Rendition of ‘Jolene’

Lil Nas X went back to his country roots by covering Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” on the BBC’s Radio 1 Live Lounge. Lil Nas X joins a lengthy group of artists, including the White Stripes, Miley Cyrus, Sisters of Mercy, and Olivia Newton-John to tackle Parton’s classic. Check it out below. [embedded content] Giving the classic country love song a dark twist, Lil Nas X deeply sings a beautiful version of the track. In the live lounge, the “Old Town Road” singer bears butterfly earrings and a necklace, and his microphone stand is embellished with fake butterflies and plants. Also during the session, Lil Nas X performed “That’s What I Want” and “Dead Right Now,” which hail from his debut album, Montero, which was released last Friday. Watch his performances of “That’s What I Want” and “Dead Right ...

Lil Nas X’s ‘Jolene’ Cover Is Wrapped In Flowers And Butterflies

As the story goes, Dolly Parton wrote “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You” both on the same day. That’s the kind of music trivia that makes the rounds on Twitter every few months 1) because it’s fascinating, and 2) because the song itself contains multitudes and sounds like it must’ve been labored over for longer than an afternoon. But nearly 50 years after first being recorded, it remains singular, even as it’s likely one of the most-covered popular songs by contemporary artists. Much like “Jolene,” Lil Nas X is also everywhere. It makes sense that he’d cover the song, as he did for BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge, because both entities are extremely strong cultural forces at the moment. When they come together, it sounds ...

Watch Let’s Eat Grandma Walk Through A ‘Hall Of Mirrors’

Let’s Eat Grandma released a glistening video for their newest single, the synthpop-laden “Hall Of Mirrors.” This is the first music in three years from the British duo, Rosa Walton and Jenny Hollingworth. The pop song is rendered through the dreamlike video directed by El Hardwick. In the bright, yet blurry video, Let’s Eat Grandma play games and ride a carousel at a fair. With a disposable-camera-like filter effect, the two make walking through a hall of mirrors look really cool in the five-minute mini-movie. “I wanted to use the setting of a fairground at night to describe the dizziness, intensity and excitement of being with a woman I had strong feelings for, and the hall of mirrors as a metaphor for discovering and exploring parts of myself that I was bringing to life,” Walton said in...

A song off the record “Good Night On Earth” is out now on streaming services. Listen to “Good Night on Earth” below: “John Parish is one of the most even-tempered, polite people I’ve ever met,” Everett said. “A true gentleman. Actually he’s probably THE most polite person I’ve ever met. But when he gets into the studio he becomes a mad scientist. If you make music with John Parish, you get stuff no one else does. He has a really unique toolbox and musical outlook. Perhaps his politeness is a copin...

Netflix Is Testing Its “Free Service” In Kenya, Only Available On Android Smartphones

HipHopWired Featured Video Source: SOPA Images / Getty Netflix has launched its most ambitious plan yet in hopes of luring more customers. As seen on Variety, movie streaming giant Netflix has begun offering a free tier of its service. The catch is it is only available to users in Kenya who own Android smartphones. The 100% free service will offer about one-fourth of the content available to those who subscribe to the service. Netflix hopes by giving users a taste of its service, it can convince those users of the free tier to sign up for a paid subscription. “If you’ve never watched Netflix before — and many people in Kenya haven’t — this is a great way to experience our service,” Cathy Conk, director of product innovation at Netflix, announced in a blog post. “And if you like what you se...

Mura Masa, Kaytranada, More Feature in Apple Music Playlist Curated By Deaf Music Fans

Apple Music‘s latest initiative provides profound insight into how the deaf develop their musical preferences. In developing Apple Music’s “A Playlist Curated by Deaf People,” the streaming giant engaged deaf curators to discover their favorite songs.  Electronic music producers including Mura Masa, Kaytranada, and The Chainsmokers all made the cut in this wide-ranging playlist. The popularity of record-breaking releases such as the latter’s single “Closer”—even among the deaf—lends credence to the age-old adage that music is truly a universal language. Interestingly, many curators cite the unique vibrations generated from rumbling baselines as a factor in determining which songs they enjoy. Others cite their understanding of a song’s ly...

Twitch Nearing Licensing Deal With RIAA and NMPA After Prolonged Conflict

For over a year, Twitch has been engrossed in a well-documented war with the music industry over its approach to licensing—or perhaps a lack thereof—on its platform.  Now, according to sources close to the US National Music Publishers Association, the Amazon-owned video streaming service is finally close to reaching an amicable deal with licensing stakeholders.  Last year, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the National Music Publishers Association (NMPA) flooded the platform with DMCA takedown notices, sparking fears of potentially sweeping permabans among Twitch streamers.  In response, Twitch acted quickly to roll out “Soundtrack By Twitch,” a tool designed to provide users with a pre-cleared catalogue of music for the...

Couple Appears to Have Sex In the Middle of Nocturnal Wonderland Music Festival

Love was in the air—and on the ground—at Nocturnal Wonderland over the weekend. After a passerby recorded a video of what appears to be a man and a woman engaging in public sex on the grounds of the SoCal music fest, he shared the clip and lambasted the couple on Twitter. While the video does not show any nudity, its contents are lewd in nature due to the pair’s overtly sexual mannerisms. The tweet immediately lit the fuse of a debate surrounding the legality of the pair’s alleged public intercourse. According to Los Angeles law firm Stephen G. Rodriguez & Partners, sex in public is not a crime in California but anyone caught doing so could face criminal charges if someone witnessed the act and was offended by the conduct. That seems to be the case with the anonymous Noctur...
