First Spin: The Week’s Best New Dance Tracks From Anabel Englund, Calvin Harris & More

Anabel Englund and Debbie Harry could be the same woman across different generations: a kick-ass vocalist initially known as the tell-tale voice of a music group (Hot Natured and Blondie, respectively) before finding solo success. Today, Englund steps a little more snugly in Harry’s stilettos  with her new single “Midnight Rapture,” which samples Blondie’s 1981 Billboard Hot 100-topping hit “Rapture.” The original’s funky, Chic-inspired production gets a peaktime-dancefloor bassline boost, while Englund’s husky voice slinks and soars, building a scene where the party’s vibes are so high and the lust so intense that hearts could explode. In another nod to Harry and “Rapture” — often considered the first Hot 100 No. 1 to feature “rap” vocals — Englund delivers her own ...

Harvey Mason Jr. on Recording Academy’s Future: ‘We Needed to Improve and We Needed to Evolve’

Still, he’s the first to admit there is plenty more progress to be made in his efforts to “modernize everything about the Academy,” including looking at new areas of revenue, making sure the Grammy voting process is as transparent as possible, and leading industry standards on diversity. Mason started his tenure forged by fire, as chairman of the board of trustees he stepped into the interim president/CEO position in January 2020 after the Academy suspended his predecessor, Deborah Dugan, for alleged misconduct only five months after she’d been hired. Dugan, who was officially fired in March 2020, filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission just days after being put on leave alleging sexual harassment, discrimination and improper business dealings by the Academy...

Lady Gaga’s Dog Walker Says Doctors ‘Didn’t Think I Was Going to Survive’

In the video captured by a doorbell camera from a home on the street, he can be heard screaming, “Oh my God! I’ve been shot!” and “Help me! I’m bleeding out from my chest!” Fischer told King that he was shot once and the bullet entered above his clavicle and exited below his shoulder blade because he was reaching for the dogs at the time. “It pierced my lung,” he revealed. He recalled being on the operating table at the hospital and seeing a team of eight or nine people working to help him. “When they put the chest tube in, all of a sudden all this blood just spurted out on the doctor next to me. Everyone’s faces just dropped. I heard my blood pressure drop. I looked at the machine. The people in the E.R. who I’d seen that night told me that they didn’t think I was going to survive that ni...

Riot Fest Day 1: See Photos of Morrissey, Patti Smith, Alkaline Trio, and More

Riot Fest kicked off in Chicago’s Douglass Park on Thursday, September 16th. All eyes were on late-addition Morrissey, who actually showed up and played a complete set. (Check out Consequence’s full account of the headlining gig here.) Punk-poet icon Patti Smith also trotted out classics like “People Have the Power,” “Redondo Beach” and “Because the Night” for what was billed as the festival’s “preview party,” while backed by her veteran band. “We are so grateful to play,” Smith said at one point, acknowledging the, you know, global crisis. “We are still in the center of a global pandemic, and don’t forget it. Take care of yourselves.” Advertisement Related Video Alkaline Trio and Joyce Manor also drew enthusiastic crowds, ushering in a late-summer weekend of good ol’ rock music. Chec...

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett Share “Love For Sale”: Stream

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett have unveiled the title track for their upcoming album Love For Sale. Watch the song’s accompanying music video below. The two superstars turn the jazzy Cole Porter standard into an old-fashioned duet, trading lines and harmonies over a big band. “Let the poets pipe of love/ In their childish way/ I know every type of love/ Better far than they,” Gaga warbles before being joined by Bennett on the rest of the verse. Originally introduced by Porter in his 1930 musical The New Yorkers, the song was a controversial addition to the Great American Songbook due to its racy telling of a sex worker advertising her “love for sale.” However, on the updated version, Mother Monster and the 95-year-old crooner spell out the song from a more distant third-person perspective. Bring Me the Horizon Continue Their Foray into Pop on New Single “DiE4u”: Stream

Bring Me the Horizon are back with a new single “DiE4u,” continuing their evolution from brutal deathcore upstarts to metalcore favorites to an infectious pop group. According to a press release, “DiE4u” begins the second phase of the UK band’s series of Post Human EPs. The first of the EP series, Post Human: Survival Horror, arrived last year. The song is primarily a pop tune, with the occasional scream from frontman Oli Sykes offering a nod to Bring Me the Horizon’s heavier days. It’s accompanied by a music video that starts out with a club performance and ends with a bloodbath. Advertisement “‘DiE4u’ is a song about toxic obsessions, vices and things you can’t kick,” said Sykes in a press release. “I think a lot of people went through very similar struggles while in lockdown, coming fac...

On the Ground at Riot Fest: How are the Festival’s COVID-19 Protocols Holding Up?

Try not to feint from shock, but a festival named for violent disobedience is showing some indifference to following the rules. The question is whether Chicago’s Riot Fest 2021 can enforce enough of its own COVID-19 protocols to avoid becoming a super-spreader event. There’s one big reason to think it’s possible. Last month, Lollapalooza welcomed some 385,000 concert-goers in the middle of a pandemic, and only about 200 new COVID-19 cases were traced to the four-day event. That’s not the only evidence that Chicago can responsibly host many thousands of people in controlled outdoor settings. While it’s too early to make any judgments about the 2021 Pitchfork Music Festival, those coronavirus entrance requirements were stricter than most. Besides that, organizers heavily encouraged...

On September 10, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE peformed without longtime bassist Mike D’Antonio at the Inkcarceration festival in Mansfield, Ohio. Filling in for him was the band’s production manager Josh Mihlek. D’Antonio‘s absence from the event was explained by KILLSWITCH ENGAGE singer Jesse Leach, who told Danny Wimmer Presents prior to taking the stage (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET): “What’s unique now about this set is we found out yesterday before loading on the bus that our bass player got the ‘VID. So we’re down one guy. He’s okay; he’s just got the sniffles. Just ’cause we’re being super precautious with this whole thing. So we have our production manager and our stage manager, who is also a dear friend of mine and...

CARCASS Releases Music Video For ‘The Scythe’s Remorseless Swing’

British extreme metal veterans CARCASS have released a music video for their new single, “The Scythe’s Remorseless Swing”. The track is taken from the band’s seventh studio album, “Torn Arteries”, which is being made available today (Friday, September 17) via Nuclear Blast Records. In 2019, the band released its first single in over five years, “Under The Scalpel Blade”, followed by a four-song EP titled “Despicable” (October 2020), setting a potent precedent for “Torn Arteries”. With the album title itself referencing an old demo created by original drummer Ken Owen back in the 1980s, “Torn Arteries” sits as a bookend on the modern side of the CARCASS discography, connecting directly back to where everythi...
