#UnmuteUs Protests Spark Easing of Restrictions for Dutch Nightlife and Festivals

The #UnmuteUs movement is continuing to grow in scale throughout the Netherlands after over 150,000 took to the streets in the latest round of protests. However, a silver lining has now taken shape. Across 10 different cities, Dutch citizens have voiced discontent with the government’s COVID-19 policies and demanded nightclubs and major events—including festivals—be provided a pathway to return to the region.  This year, frustration with the Dutch government among the public and private sector has escalated as the government’s rolling ban on music festivals has pushed into September. With no sign of relenting, 70,000 protestors took to the streets in late August with the dawn of #UnmuteUs.  Recommended Articles Following the events of this weekend, however, a highly v...

See St. Vincent Chase Herself in Haunting ‘The Nowhere Inn’ Video

In lieu of the upcoming film The Nowhere Inn where she stars with Carrie Brownstein, St. Vincent has shared a video for the film’s title track. Here, she stands behind a singer that is performing to a packed audience in an elegant theatre, while she is actually the one singing for the poser performer, as they both bear matching green gowns. St. Vincent and the performer are mimicking each other’s graceful hand gestures, and when the curtain closes, she chases her doppelganger through several red curtains. Singing “Been waiting now for years to see you / In my everlasting mirror,” she approaches and tries to turn around the fake-St. Vincent, to find out she has no face at all and pulls out a ring from her hair. After reading her name imprinted into the ring, naturally, she eats it. The vide...

R.I.P. Norm Macdonald, Beloved Comedian Dead at 61

Norm Macdonald, the beloved comedian and former Saturday Night Live cast member, has died at the age of 61 following a nine-year private battle with cancer. “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic,” Macdonald’s friend and producing partner, Lori Jo Hoekstra said in a September 14th statement announcing his death (via Deadline). “He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.” With a quick wit but painfully slow delivery, Macdonald was known for long walks to bamboozling simple, left-field punchlines. His “Moth” joke, delivered during a 2009 appearance on Conan, is a particularly beloved example of his tension-snappin...

Grimes’ Met Gala Sword Was Made Out of Fermented (?) Guns and Inspired by Dune

The most likable aspect of Grimes has always been how she makes her nerdiest dreams come true. As the latest evidence, look no further than her Met Gala look, which was inspired by Dune and included a sword made out of fermented (?) guns. The Canadian pop artist spoke to Vogue about the inspirations behind her outfit, and dropped the tidbit about fermented guns to ET. It’s not clear what she means by the guns being fermented; fermentation is an organic process that gives us beer, yeasted breads, chocolate, and more, and usually refers to microorganisms causing a desirable change in food or liquid. Some metal-eating bacterias exist, though the crusty byproduct would make for poor weaponry. Perhaps her partner Elon Musk found something in his preparations for coloniz...
