Doja Cat wasn’t only the host of the 2021 MTV VMAs, she was also a performer. The rapper/singer gave a spectacularly out-of-this-world performance that mashed up “Been Like This” and “You Right,” tracks from her recent album Planet Her. Gymnast Simone Biles might’ve introduced the performance, but for once, she wasn’t the one flipping through the air; Doja Cat descended from the Barclays Center ceiling, spinning above the crowd as a giant ring of light twisted around her. She sang “Been Like This” from the sky before touching down on the stage to do a contemporary dance routine to “You Right.” Check out footage from the performance below, and replay all of tonight’s performances here. Machine Gun Kelly doesn’t shy away from other people’s blood, so maybe this was bound to happen. In the midst of all the glitz and glamour that was going down at the 2021 MTV VMAs, the rapper-turned-pop-punk torchbearer reportedly got into an altercation with UFC champ Conor McGregor. According to Page Six, MGK and McGregor had to be separated on the red carpet at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center Sunday night. People reports that the tiff all started when McGregor asked for a photo with MGK, but was denied by his team. He then apparently started swinging his cane in the artist’s direction, and Page Six says sources saw the UFC fighter throw a drink at MGK. “[McGregor] was ready to throw fists,” one source said. “Security was having trouble holding him back.” Apparently, red carpet phot...
Already the winner of the Push Performance, Olivia Rodrigo made her VMAs debut with a performance of “good 4 u.” She entered the stage in grand fashion, coming from the sky before launching into her pop punk-infused song. Watch her entrance below. Rodrigo was accompanied by a slew of backing dancers (all wearing masks) as confetti dropped from the Barclays Center’s ceiling. [embedded content] [embedded content] Earlier this year, we spoke with Rodrigo about her instant success, but all wasn’t well for the emerging star. She was called out by Courtney Love for allegedly ripping off the Live Through This cover on her debut album, Sour. You can read our review of that album here. Drake and Kanye West‘s beef does not seem to show any signs of stopping. Now, it appears that the DONDA artist wants to go head-to-head in a VERZUZ battle with Drake. In a recent interview on The Angie Martinez Show, Swizz Beatz revealed that a VERZUZ battle between the two has been proposed. He shared, “Kanye was willing to do the VERZUZ. He wanted to battle Drake. I think their communication started getting in a zone. I left that up to them, and that’s what I told to [Timbaland], as well. I was like, ‘Yo, they have to bring that to the table.’ They would have to agree to do that. Kanye was ready, but I don’t know where that’s at now. I’m still leaving it on them.” While a VERZUZ battle with arguably the two biggest hip-hop artists of the season would be highly entertaining, it seems that...
At last year’s MTV VMAs, Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker turned the pre-show into a pink-hued pop-punk battlefield. This year, the pink is back, the battle is internal, and the whole thing has been moved to the main stage — or in this case, the main grave. As the pair tore through the more downbeat, melancholy “Papercuts,” a decidedly wounded MGK literally clawed his way through a bed of dirt — a fitting physicalization of the lyrics, which find the artist dancing on his own grave. 2020 was the conflict. 2021 is the recovery. Jamie McCarthy/MTV VMAs 2021/Getty Images for MTV/ViacomCBS It’s become custom for Barker to muscle up MGK’s sound, and on the kit, he brought his patented powerful (but in this case, restrained) energy that complemented the raw emoti...
It’s safe to say that BTS’s leader RM is having a pretty historic birthday. In addition to having people around the globe celebrating “Namjoon Day” on social media, the 27-year-old artist took home two Moonpeople with his fellow BTS members at the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday (September 12) — and the night is far from over. Introduced by boy-band royalty Nick Lachey of 98 Degrees, AJ McLean of The Backstreet Boys, and Lance Bass of NSYNC, BTS won in the Best K-pop category with their snappy single “Butter.” Since its release in May, the feel-good track has been a shining jewel atop the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 10 weeks. In a true testament to their strength, BTS has won the Best K-pop category three years in a row since its inception in 2019 — first w...
By Deepa Lakshmin “This has been the most magical year of my life,” Olivia Rodrigo said in her first-ever Video Music Awards acceptance speech Sunday night (September 12) at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, dedicating the award to “all of the girls who write songs on their bedroom floor.” She was taking home the Moonperson for Song of the Year for her record-breaking smash hit “Drivers License,” but little did she know she’d be back on stage soon after as the 2021 Best New Artist. The Sour singer-songwriter and VMA performer has, indeed, had a banner year with numerous chart-topping singles and a debut album that showcases her talent and skill as an artist. Though the LP is packed with coming-of-age stories and teenage memories, the raw authenticity and emotion behind every chorus an...
With the VMAs‘ triumphant live return to Brooklyn, MTV brought out one of the borough’s best, legend himself, Busta Rhymes. The iconic rapper — along with his hype man Spliff Star — took to the Barclays Center stage on Sunday night to perform a medley of his biggest hits, including “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See,” “Look at Me Now,” and “Pass the Courvoisier,” all jams that were amplified by extremely memorable music videos. Rhymes had the audience jumping throughout his medley, before ending his fast-rap attack by telling the audience, “Brooklyn, don’t ever forget that!” John Shearer/MTV VMAs 2021/Getty Images for MTV/ViacomCBS Rhymes is no stranger to the VMAs. He has been nominated for 16 Moonperson awards over th...
After pivoting to recent Billboard Rock & Alternative Airplay No. 1 “Shame Shame,” the band capped their performance with a blistering run through signature 1997 single “Everlong.” While they performed the climactic hit, a split-screen montage simultaneously playing clips from dozens of Foo Fighters videos from the course of their career was displayed both behind them and underneath them, projected onto the actual stage. Following the performance, Grohl gave Eilish a big hug and accepted the award on the band’s behalf, saying, “We’ve been a band for 26 years, so it feels pretty good.” He went on to thank a number of figures from MTV’s history, pulled half-facetiously from a “list” he said the group had prepared...
“LALA (Unlocked)” marks the first official musical collaboration between the two artists. Less than two weeks before its debut, Keys announced the forthcoming release of her young adult graphic novel, titled Girl on Fire, expected out March 1 via HarperCollins Publishers. The book, named after the 15-time Grammy-winner’s Billboard Hot 100-charting track, tells the fictional story of 14-year-old Lolo Wright and her telekinetic superpowers. “When I wrote ‘Girl on Fire,’ I knew I was writing it for that girl in the way back row who needed someone to tell her there’s nothing you can’t do, that nothing is impossible,” Keys said in a statement. “When Andrew [Weiner] and I came up with the idea of translating the song into a young adult graphic novel, I ...
Madonna’s Surprise Appearance No New York City awards show would be complete without iconic New Yorker/the Queen of Pop herself, Madonna. In a pre-taped, chill-inducing cold open, Madonna paid homage to her history with MTV on the network’s 40th anniversary. “Around 40 years ago I came to New York City with nothing but $35 and a pair of dance shoes,” she said. “Forty years ago, another underdog arrived in New York City hoping to create something revolutionary. An all-music channel premiered in the middle of the night and called itself MTV. We found each other and formed a bond that changed my life, changed music and created a whole new art form. That’s why there’s only one place to be tonight.” She then surprised the crowd by showing up to th...
Another year, another MTV Video Music Awards. After a socially-distanced outing in 2020, the VMAs returned in full force at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Sunday (Sept. 12) night for yet another memorable evening of performances, speeches, and of course, Moon People. The 2021 VMAs were a big night for Olivia Rodrigo, who took home both song of the year and best new artist, while Justin Bieber and Lil Nas X also had good nights, each taking home artist and video of the year, respectively.
