Remember all those Pokémon cards your mom threw out when you got bored of them? It turns out those could have bought you a Tesla. It certainly feels like the 90s again with how much Pokémon has been in the news lately. Always one for pop culture crossovers, Steve Aoki has gone all-in on the craze with his latest charitable endeavor. Next month, he, Gary “King Pokémon, the hosts of Dumb Money, and other prominent figures in the Pokémon community will host a $1 million charity box break event called “Pokémon Saves The World.” For those unfamiliar with box breaks or the trading cards in general, participants will bid on spots in the auction that will represent packs of cards in the sealed boxes. Since the boxes included are from the 90s, they are ext...
Despite having only launched last year, Boomerang Nightclub is on the fast track to becoming one of Hong Kong’s most desirable clubbing desintations. Boomerang opened around Halloween in 2020 but had to temporarily shutter due to the impact of COVID-19. Since reopening, the venue has made ripples in the region’s nightlife scene thanks to its world-class live production and immersive design. Boomerang’s roots can be traced to Deejaykarlie, an influential local artist who reportedly channeled her experiences traveling the world to build the nightclub’s concept. It has also partnered withJohn Rana, the owner of Privé Group affectionately known as the “Asian Clubbing Dragon,” who has over 15 years of experience in Hong Kong’s n...
Common on Friday dropped off his 14th studio album, A Beautiful Revolution (Pt 2). The record arrives with 11 tracks, boasting features from Black Thought, PJ, Jessica Care Moore, Seun Kuti, Marcus King, Isaiah Shakey, Brittany Howard and Morgan Parker. The album follows A Beautiful Revolution (Pt. 1), a nine-track project that Common released last year as part of a larger effort to instill optimism in the disenfranchised with uplifting messaging. “A Beautiful Revolution (Pt. 2) was created with hope and inspiration in mind,” the Chicago rapper said in a statement. “The spirit of the album was meant to emulate what a greater day would sound and feel like. We were in the midst of some tough political and socially challenging times. There was still hurt, anger and pain lingering, so I w...
New York death metal pioneers SUFFOCATION will release a live album, “Live In North America”, on November 12 via Nuclear Blast Records. The official music video for the first single, “Funeral Inception”, featuring photographs taken by Jason Carlson, can be seen below. SUFFOCATION created the template for the brutal death metal genre in the early 1990s. Landmark albums such as “Effigy Of The Forgotten” and “Pierced From Within” also went on to inspire the birth of the tech-death and slam death metal genres. With the departure of original vocalist Frank Mullen, the band marks an end of an era with a live album recorded live during his last North American tour. Mixed and mastered by Christian Donaldson (BEYOND CREATION, CRYPTOPSY), this release ...
KING’S X frontman Doug “dUg” Pinnick will release his fifth solo album, “Joy Bomb”, on October 15 via Rat Pak Records. Pinnick‘s first solo album of new material since 2013’s “Naked” features thirteen brand new tracks. “‘Joy Bomb’ is a collection of tunes I’ve been writing for the last two years,” Doug says. “The pandemic has made me go deeper into myself and how to deal with everything and everyone in a new way. These songs are all about truth the way I see it, and I’m thankful that at 71 I can still make music that hopefully matters. ‘Joy Bomb’ is my latest offer.” From the charging rhythms of album opener “Jon Boy” all the way through the barnstorming closing tra...
OVERKILL bassist D.D. Verni spoke to Jeff Gaudiosi of MisplacedStraws.com about the progress of the recording sessions for the band’s new album. He said: “We’re recording it right now. A good portion of it’s done. It keeps getting moved, frankly, depending on the COVID situation, when we can tour. At first, we thought, ‘What difference does it make whether we tour or not? Just put a record out.’ And then we thought, ‘We really wanna put out the music and then bring it to the people.’ That’s the fun. It’s not just putting it out and just saying, ‘There you go’; it’s then being able to tour it and bring it and put it out there. So right now, we have a tour set for March here in the States, and then in April and May...
AS I LAY DYING singer Tim Lambesis has commented on the departure of guitarist Nick Hipa. Late last month, Hipa confirmed his exit from AS I LAY DYING, explaining that he can no longer justify being part of “a superficial pursuit” of the “story and meaning” that the band’s 2018 reunion was built upon. Although Hipa‘s exit was originally rumored in August 2020, neither he nor his bandmates had publicly spoken out about the split until he took to his Instagram on August 31 to write: “At this point though, it has been well over a year since I have distanced myself from [AS I LAY DYING] on a personal and professional level. In that time they have only given fans merchandising posts and show announcements. This sort of activity highlights and reinforces...
Name The Weather Station (Tamara Lindeman) Best known for Thinking too much. Current city Toronto. Really want to be in I would love to be in the Azores about now, honestly. Migration season, all the flowers and birds, all the green. Excited about Having a friend over, hugging people, being in the same room as another human without a mask on. That would be nice. My current music collection has a lot of Gordon Lightfoot. A lot of dollar records are Lightfoot, and so you end up with a pretty hefty Lightfoot collection without even trying… And a little bit of Everything. Don’t judge me for I can’t think of any records I wouldn’t want to admit to owning. My love is my own! Preferred format As a listener, I prefer streaming. I’m a headphones listener. To have access to nearly all of recorded mu...
Earlier this week, Ed Sheeran unveiled his latest single “Shivers,” a caffeinated but tender bit of dance-pop that marked a far cry from the initial vampire vibes he sent out with “Bad Habits” when that dropped in late June. Here’s some good news: Sheeran will perform at the 2021 VMAs in only two days — and he’s bringing his fizzy-crush new song along with him. Both tunes are set to appear on his upcoming fourth album =, along with “Visiting Hours,” and they fit squarely in his wheelhouse, sensitive singer-songwriter constructs that embrace the largesse of pop. This space is where he’s spent a decade forging a comfortable path. It’s also what makes Sheeran such a charismatic performer, something he’ll bring back to the VMA s...
By Ilana Kaplan The release of her debut album is not something Normani has taken lightly. She’s spent the past few years consumed by pressure from the outside world: people’s opinions and expectations of the type of music she should be creating and the type of artist they envisioned her to be. She considered whether her music was “Black enough,” if she was neglecting the audience she built over the past six years or making sure everyone felt heard. But Normani was losing herself along the way. “I was very much in my head,” she tells MTV News, speaking over Zoom from her Los Angeles home. Looking to please everyone, admittedly, made the process “not fun.” But while it took a minute, Normani has found room for herself — and her own voice — in what will be her debut solo album. “I&...
Solar Power, Lorde’s long-awaited third album, is no Melodrama, but that’s kind of the whole point. The reclusive Kiwi pop singer and Best Cinematography nominee has come of age, an inevitability she addresses directly in “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All).” It’s a gentle, guitar-led cut addressed to Lorde’s teenage self, although she knows her advice will likely go unheeded (“You can take it if you want it, these are just / Secrets from a girl who’s seen it all”). Does the song tiptoe into cheesy territory? Definitely, but as a longtime Lorde fan and fellow 25-year-old who also “couldn’t wait to turn 15 / Then you blink and it’s been 10 years,” I’m here for it. Come for the tender introspection, and stay for the free therapy (“Everybody wants the best for you / But you gotta want it...
It’s the first Friday in September, and Leon Thomas III picks up the phone, recognizing my number without hesitation. We’ve been planning this call for a few months now, maybe a year, but somehow, this was the day it happened. The day we landed on, completely by accident, was monumental for the same reason it was monumental for the rest of the music world — it was the day Drake released his Certified Lover Boy, his long-awaited, end-of-summer fireworks-show of a sixth studio album. And of the behemoth LP’s 21 tracks, Thomas — who has already worked with heavyweights from Ty Dolla $ign to longtime friend Ariana Grande to soul superheroes like Snoh Aalegra — co-wrote and co-produced three of them. Anyone who’s glanced at Twitter at all this past week knows why the world is buzzing...
