Bop Shop VMA Edition: Songs From Chlöe, Lorde, Polo G, And More

Solar Power, Lorde’s long-awaited third album, is no Melodrama, but that’s kind of the whole point. The reclusive Kiwi pop singer and Best Cinematography nominee has come of age, an inevitability she addresses directly in “Secrets From a Girl (Who’s Seen It All).” It’s a gentle, guitar-led cut addressed to Lorde’s teenage self, although she knows her advice will likely go unheeded (“You can take it if you want it, these are just / Secrets from a girl who’s seen it all”). Does the song tiptoe into cheesy territory? Definitely, but as a longtime Lorde fan and fellow 25-year-old who also “couldn’t wait to turn 15 / Then you blink and it’s been 10 years,” I’m here for it. Come for the tender introspection, and stay for the free therapy (“Everybody wants the best for you / But you gotta want it...

Reintroducing Leon Thomas III, Drake’s Certified Secret Weapon

It’s the first Friday in September, and Leon Thomas III picks up the phone, recognizing my number without hesitation. We’ve been planning this call for a few months now, maybe a year, but somehow, this was the day it happened.  The day we landed on, completely by accident, was monumental for the same reason it was monumental for the rest of the music world — it was the day Drake released his Certified Lover Boy, his long-awaited, end-of-summer fireworks-show of a sixth studio album. And of the behemoth LP’s 21 tracks, Thomas — who has already worked with heavyweights from Ty Dolla $ign to longtime friend Ariana Grande to soul superheroes like Snoh Aalegra — co-wrote and co-produced three of them. Anyone who’s glanced at Twitter at all this past week knows why the world is buzzing...

30 Artists Reflect on Metallica’s Black Album Turning 30

These days, Metallica’s self-titled fifth LP (aka the Black Album) is hailed as a bona fide classic. Quite admirable, considering how upon its 1991 release date, diehard fans spread buyer’s remorse faster than COVID. In this writer’s tenure as a surly clerk for a mall-based record-store chain, he remembers the true believers complaining about everything from the shortened song lengths to James Hetfield’s lyrics to uber-producer Bob Rock’s framing of their heavy metal hellions. Back then, insufferable customers got their cash refunds while others continued to bitch like mad with the subtext that “maybe it would grow on me.” Now 30 years and approximately 35 million sales later, the Black Album is downright canonical. Sure, the Bay Area thrash-metal mavericks were indeed architects (alongsid...

‘Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy’ Spotlights Nova Corps and a James Gunn-esque Comedic Tone

Shortly giving fans a first look at the game’s main villain, Square Enix has now dropped yet another trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy over at the PlayStation Showcase 2021, this time throwing out a comedic yet action-packed look at Star-Lord and his band of misfits. Shown on top of a catchy rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack, the two-and-a-half-minute clip shows off more of the game’s main characters and their personality traits, especially spotlighting a rather comedic Star-Lord that is very much reminiscent of James Gunn‘s take on the Guardians for Marvel Studios back in 2014. Aside from the protagonists, we also get closer looks at the Universal Church of Truth and Grand Unifier Raker, but the highlight for fans are no doubt the appearance of Cosmo the golden retriever astro...

‘Borderlands’ Spin-Off ‘Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands’ Receives a Gameplay Trailer

After announcing the game during the Summer Game Fest this year, Gearbox Software has now dropped the first gameplay trailer for the upcoming Borderlands spin-off Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. Spanning a little more than two minutes, the new clip showcases a whole host of first-person shooter gameplay in what appears to be a fantastical world full of mythical and magical creatures like enchanted skeletons. Aside from obviously containing all kinds of whacky weapons and guns, the tone and visuals of Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands naturally draws heavily from the original Borderlands franchise, but with an added element of witchery. “We want you to explore and try all the different ways to use your firepower,” says creative director Matt Cox in a post on the PlayStation Blog. “In tha...
