Singer Rob Halford of British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary, spoke to The Virginian-Pilot about the band’s longevity. “I think anything of quality sustains itself,” he said. “Right from those early kinds of ground shakers — how far can I think back? — ‘United’, ‘Take On The World’, ‘Evening Star’, anything from that point on where you make that connection and it starts to stick and that is also your motivation to keep making music at a very high standard. We’ve never approached our albums as it being about one song serving as a radio track and the rest is filler. … Good stuff lasts forever.” He added: “PRIEST is part of the fabric of music in American culture now. Brandi Carlile has always been upfront about her love for Joni Mitchell, often playing songs by the folk legend onstage while on tour. Somnia – HAWKWIND

RATING: 8/10 Half a century into their career and legendary space rockers HAWKWIND‘s ground-breaking, experimental madness has provided immeasurable influence on heavy progressive music. Since day one, they’ve contributed to the world of music by taking a left-field approach, allowing themselves to creatively wander along their path, all the while remaining on a consistent and logical trajectory while never betraying their core sound and essence. Numerous notable musicians have had stints with the English band, including CREAM drummer Ginger Baker and Lemmy, the latter of whom was ousted following a Canadian/American border drug-related arrest. But HAWKWIND‘s true heart and soul has always been its only remaining original member, frontman Dave Brock. Although at 80 heR...
