This year the dance music community mourned the loss of Pierce Fulton, a star talent—gone far too soon—whose presence continues to be missed. In 2014 on this day, September 1st, Fulton released his late-summer smash “Kuaga,” according to the song’s Beatport listing. It went on to become one of the most beloved electronic music tracks of the past decade. Like most great works, “Kuaga” was written by Fulton with humble expectations. Derived from Swahili, “Kuaga,” meaning “farewell,” was Fulton’s way of mentally moving on from the current chapter of his professional career. It was the last song of his existing record deal, and he was ready to spread his wings elsewhere. In a 2017 Reddit AMA, he even admitted to thinking of...
Harry Porter is in the building. Ahead of the 2021 edition of his curated Bay Area music festival Second Sky, Porter Robinson has announced a magical partnership to bring the event to life. The electronic music virtuoso has teamed up with Nassal, a renowned developer of themed environments who designed The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando. “some more updates on transforming Second Sky – my manager hit up Nassal, the company that delivered the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Orlando,” Robinson wrote in an Instagram post. “when i first heard about it, i really thought there just no way it was possible that we could get them.” “i am insanely hyped to tell you that Nassal will be the one...
Injury Reserve are releasing their highly-anticipated sophomore album, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, in just a couple of weeks. The alt hip-hop group has already shared the record’s lead single, “Knees,” and today, they’re following it up with “Superman That” and an accompanying music video. “Superman That” sees Injury Reserve moving in an experimental direction, fueled by crunchy beats and a nearly-indistinguishable time signature. To top it off, Ritchie with a T’s melodic vocals are doused in Auto-Tune, making the track feel almost otherworldly. Its video, directed by Injury Reserve producer Parker Corey, is full of equally disorienting visuals. Check out the “Superman That” clip below. By the Time I Get to Phoenix, the follow-up to Injury Reserve’s 2019 self-titled debut, is due ou...
Fans have waited 25 years for Michael McDonald to reunite with The Doobie Brothers. And while a few lucky concert goers got to see them together in August, the rest of us will have to wait a little longer, because as the band has indicated, he’s come down with COVID-19. McDonald pulled out of the August 31st concert at the Minnesota State Fair, as did the opening act Dirty Dozen Brass Band. The rest of the Doobie Brothers performed as planned, and after the second song, Patrick Simmons provided some insight. “He’s recuperating and isolating,” he said of McDonald (via the Star Tribune). “We hope to have him back in a week or so.” He added that the singer “had his vaccine.” Advertisement Related Video Tom Johnston was quick to point out that the entire band and their touring crew had al...
A few months after doing an about face on his vaccine stance, Joe Rogan has said he caught COVID-19 while on tour. And because he’s what we’ll call a “counter-mainstream” podcast host, of course Rogan took the unproven horse dewormer ivermectin as part of his treatment regimen. What, he couldn’t get his hands on some hydroxychloroquine? If you haven’t heard, ivermectin is an anti-parasitic medication mainly used to treat horses but also, in smaller doses, to fight river blindness and intestinal roundworms in people. Now, obviously, a virus is not a worm, so why anti-vax and right wing personalities have latched onto ivermectin as a possible cure for COVID-19 is down to more of the usual “don’t be a sheep” herd mentality. Of course, Rogan is a hugely successful and wealthy comedian, so woul...
Britney Spears has been cleared of any wrongdoing in an incident involving her housekeeper. Last month, Spears’ housekeeper alleged that the singer slapped a phone out of her hand after the two got into an argument regarding the veterinary care of Spears’ dog. Ventura County Sheriff’s Office investigated Spears for misdemeanor domestic battery, but declined to file charges, citing insufficient evidence that a crime had occurred. Advertisement Related Video In a statement, Spears’ lawyer Mathew Rosengart described the allegations as “nothing more than sensationalized-tabloid fodder — an overblown ‘he said, she said’ regarding a cell phone.” “If this involved Jane Doe rather than Britney Spears it would not have been pursued or covered at all,” Rosengart added. Anyone can make an accusation ...
Some nights you go out, and along with the usual sky-high Uber receipt, return home with an iridescent, forever-memory. How beautiful your friends look under the soft gel lighting, cocking their heads back and grinning lazily; how liberating it is to whirl with them drunkenly as the DJ plays another song. In the right company, you don’t have to say much to be understood, yet there’s a kind of tacit oath: that you’ve known each other then and now, and you will care for the successive versions of each other that follow. This sublime, uncomplicated devotion illuminates “Hold U,” by the 24-year-old Saddle Creek artist Indigo De Souza. Its music video celebrates the communal warmth of a queer party; friends brush eyeshadow onto De Souza’s lids and tangle together on the couch before getting gli...
