Pearl Jam Celebrate Ten, No Code Anniversaries with Remixed Digital Albums

August 27th is an important day for Pearl Jam fanatics, and the date has particular significance this year. Today marks the 30th anniversary of the band’s iconic debut, Ten, as well as the 25th anniversary of their smash fourth LP, No Code. To celebrate, Pearl Jam is unveiling newly remixed digital exclusive editions of both records, plus they’re streaming their legendary 2014 “No Code Show” for free. The new digital mixes come courtesy of producer/sound engineer Josh Evans, who produced PJ’s most recent full-length, last year’s Gigaton. As he did with that album, Evans has given Ten and No Code an immersive makeover using Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio, adding even more detail and nuance to the classic tracks. As Evans explained in a press release, “These two a...

METALLICA’s LARS ULRICH Pays Tribute To CHARLIE WATTS: ‘He Was Such A Significant Part Of THE ROLLING STONES’ Sound’

METALLICA‘s Lars Ulrich has paid tribute to THE ROLLING STONES drummer Charlie Watts, who died on Tuesday (August 24) at the age of 80. Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, Ulrich said: “It hits hard on many levels. Obviously, as a STONES fan, it’s sort of the end of at least an era within that band, because he was the only drummer that ever recorded with them. He was such a significant part of their sound, and an underrated part of their sound. In a band where the spotlight would go to especially Mick [Jagger] and Keith [Richards], a lot of people truly didn’t understand how valuable he was. And from that side, as a STONES fan, it’s a great loss.” Ulrich went on to call Watts the “driving force” behind THE ROLLING STONES. “He could kick...

JASON NEWSTED Says He Was ‘F**king Livid’ When He Heard METALLICA’s ‘…And Justice For All’ For First Time

In a new interview with Metal Hammer magazine, former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted discussed the sound of the band’s “…And Justice For All” album. While “…And Justice For All” is considered one of METALLICA‘s classics, it has been criticized almost since the day it was released in 1988 for the lack of any bass guitar on the record. Newsted‘s playing is virtually buried in the mix — and many fans feel that drummer Lars Ulrich, who had very specific ideas for how he wanted his drums to sound, is to blame. Newsted said that he was “fucking livid” when he heard “…And Justice For All” for the first time. “Are you kidding me?” he told Metal Hammer. “I was ready [to go] for throats, man! No, I...

BUTCHER BABIES Pay Tribute To DC COMICS Character LOBO On New Single ‘It’s Killin’ Time, Baby!’

BUTCHER BABIES have released a new single, “It’s Killin’ Time, Baby”, featuring guest vocalist Craig Mabbitt (ESCAPE THE FATE). “From beginning to end, ‘Killin’ Time’ is a relentless groove-infused face melter that is guaranteed to give you bang-over,” says BUTCHER BABIES guitarist Henry Flury. The single, out today, was inspired by the DC Comics character Lobo, a heavy metal bounty hunter. It was recorded by Matt Good (FROM FIRST TO LAST) and will be featured on BUTCHER BABIES‘ upcoming independently released EP alongside recently released singles “Last Dance”, “Yorktown”, “Sleeping With The Enemy” and “Bottom Of A Bottle” (feauturing Andy James). “I can’t think of a bet...

Big Red Machine Champions the Spirit of Collaboration on How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?

The National and Bon Iver are two of the biggest names in indie music, and they rose to prominence around the same time. The National cemented themselves as mainstays with their 2007 breakthrough, Boxer, and Bon Iver released their storied debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, just a couple of months later. It only makes sense that their paths would eventually converge, and they did three years ago when The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon made a collaborative record together under the moniker Big Red Machine. Now, they’ve released their sophomore effort, How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last?, and it embraces the ethos of collectivism even more than its predecessor. Although Big Red Machine’s first record was by nature a joint endeavor, How Long… features an even wider g...

Rich Gang Has Returned With a New Track From Birdman and Young Thug

Rich Gang is back. The famous group’s return is marked by a new single with Birdman and Young Thug titled “Blue Emerald.” The upbeat track showcases Young Thug’s rap prowess as he slithers throughout the song’s verses with slippery melodies. The video showcases Young Thug and Birdman riding through a city tunnel in a white Rolls Royce Cullinan with a star-filled roof. As the Atlanta-rapper lays down his verses, the video flips through scenes featuring the Rolls Royce, dancing women, a studio and an all-white room shot with a fishbowl lens. “This is what y’all have been waiting for,” Birdman, co-founder of Rich Gang said in a press release. “Me and Thugger are back together, and ‘Blue Emerald’ is just the beginning. This is the next era of Rich Gang. It starts now.” The new single leads the...

Big Red Machine’s Ever-Expanding Guest List

By Beau Hayhoe A curious thing happened right before Big Red Machine announced its new album, How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last? (out today on 37d03d/Jagjaguwar). As the social accounts of the indie folk duo (The National’s Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon) flickered to life, one could sense larger forces at play. Rumors buzzed on Reddit, tweets took off, and speculation reached a fever pitch surrounding the mysterious woman in visual promos. Eventually, eagle-eyed fans were rewarded handsomely. Big Red Machine whirred to life, featuring Dessner’s reunion with Taylor Swift on the heels of her two stellar 2020 releases he produced. Swift sings on “Birch” and “Renegade,” and the 15-track album (recorded in spurts dating to spring 2019) is carried by a cavalry of capital-I...

The Weeknd and Nas Link With Belly on Scorching New Track “Die For It”

Belly, The Weeknd and Nas have teamed up on a fiery track, dubbed “Die For It,” along with an accompanying music video. The single arrives on Belly’s latest album See You Next Wednesday, out today. The visual opens in a burning city, where skyrise buildings crumble among flames. The Weeknd sings the opening verse from a vintage TV screen situated in the center of the chaos, before a large black crow flashes across the screen, transitioning into Belly’s takeover. “I remember sleepin’ on floors and missin’ tours, I was rock bottom,” he raps while traversing the fiery streets. “Money on my head, that was top dollar.” Nas then takes his turn from the vantage point of a clock tower that overlooks the ruined cityscape, before the scene switches back to The Weeknd on the set of his TV recording, ...

30 Artists Reflect on 30 Years of Pearl Jam’sTen

The story has been told thousands of times, but it bears repeating: Pearl Jam should never have happened. The ’90s had just begun. In March 1990, the promising Seattle rock band Mother Love Bone was about to unveil their debut album. But on the eve of the release, the band’s lead singer, Andrew Wood, died tragically of a heroin overdose. His band members, guitarist Stone Gossard and bassist Jeff Ament were blind-sided, devastated, and decided to end the band. Over the next few months, Gossard slowly found his way back to music. He made a few demos that landed in the hands of a surfer from San Diego via Chicago who got them from ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons. The surfer’s name was Eddie Vedder. The songs he sent back? “Alive,” “Once,” and “Footsteps.” Pearl Jam formed around t...

Drake Announces ‘Certified Lover Boy’ Release Date in Cryptic ‘SportsCenter’ Takeover

Following several delays, Drake has revealed an official release date for his upcoming album, Certified Lover Boy. On Friday morning, the Six God interrupted ESPN‘s regularly scheduled SportsCenter program with a cryptic, glitchy commercial to make the announcement. Stylized in the form of a broadcast hack, the stealthy ad featured a piece of cardboard with a clear, handwritten message: “CLB September 3.” Drake’s reps did not immediately respond to HYPEBEAST’s request for comment on Friday morning. Did Drake hack Sports Center and just randomly drop the CLB date? pic.twitter.com/BOcN51J0wK — GlockTopickz (@Glock_Topickz) August 27, 2021 Earlier this month, Drake confirmed that Certified Lover Boy was finished while stopping by OVO Sound 42’s Fri Yiy Friday show on Siriu...
