Halsey’s If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power Turns the Pop Artist into a Rock Star

In 2019, Halsey released the fiery “Nightmare,” an urgent, industrial anthem that aptly captured the universal “female rage” amplified by the patriarchal doom of the Trump era. The song, a stark departure from her pop-centric releases in the past, was noticeably left off of their third album Manic. The track, however, was never written off by Halsey; instead, the defiant, standalone single laid the foundation for If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power, the singer’s new concept album that tackles “the joys and horrors of pregnancy and childbirth.” The unwavering hope of parenthood loomed large on Halsey’s last record Manic, as she marked their uphill battle conceiving with a love song to their future child. “When you decide it’s your time to arrive, I’ve loved you for all of my life,” they sang ...

On the current list, “Time” exits the top 10 after 12 weeks in the region and dips to No. 12. With “Wockesha,” Moneybagg Yo cements his status as one of the hottest acts on R&B/hip-hop radio in the past year. After none of his first five entries on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart as a lead act reached the top 20, the rapper has scored four consecutive top 10s: “1 2 3,” featuring Blac Youngsta (No. 6), “Said Sum” (No. 5), “Time Today” and “Wockesha.” In tandem with its R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay coronation, “Wockesha” also climbs 2-1 to rule the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, which measures the most-played son...

Sarah Barthel of Phantogram gives off Lana Del Rey vibes while singing about driving through “corridors of endless trees.” Lyrics like “I changed my state to replicate the blackness of the blood you drew,” intensifies the bond between the lovers in darkness, or possibly the half that has been brainwashed. “Don’t wake me up” Barthel repeats, her voice careening into a guitar solo. That’s the beauty of Tom Morello, regurgitating yet another new sound from his alternative rock heart. “The guitar solo...
