HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Kevin Mazur / Getty The saga for the release of Kanye West new DONDA album continues. In the latest publicity grab—it is what it is—for what’s become a traveling tour, Yeezy is recreating his childhood home for the listening event at Chicago’s Soldier Field. Apparently, the “Power” rapper is building up a model of his old Chi-Town crib in the stadium, as seen below. Recently, besides tofu beefing with Drake, Kanye West wiped all the photos from his Instagram feed except for one—an image of his aforementioned childhood home on the South Side of Chicago. Well, there are more pics now, though. The first pair of DONDA listening sessions were held at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. West seemingly took up residence in the arena, claiming he would be compl...
Spencer Elden, the baby featured on the famed cover art of Nirvana‘s Nevermind, is reportedly suing the band for child sexual exploitation. According to sources, Elden is suing Nirvana, its surviving members and the estate of Kurt Cobain. He alleges that he was unable to give his consent to use the image because he was only four months old, and that his legal guardians did not give their consent either. Elden further argues that Nirvana promised to cover his genitals with a sticker and that the photo used is actually child pornography; the band supposedly did not prevent him from “being sexually exploited” and the famous image of him as a naked baby caused him lifelong damages. He is now seeking at least $150,000 USD from each member. The lawsuit was filed just a month before the celebrate...
Kanye West has filed documents to legally change his name to “Ye.” TMZ reports that the 44-year-old rapper submitted the paperwork with a California court this week. Under state law, he’ll be given a court date sometime in the next three months, at which point a judge will hear Kanye’s petition and decide whether to approve the name change. Kanye has yet to publicly comment on the move, but this is not the first time he has flirted with a rebrand. In 2019, he said he had considered legally changing his name to “Christian Genius Billionaire Kanye West” “until ‘yall understand exactly what it is.” Kanye did not follow through with that threat, but this time he’s gone as far to actually file a legal petition with the court. It’s now in the hands of a judge to decide whether one of the biggest...
The music world was shaken today when we learned of the death of Charlie Watts, the longtime drummer for The Rolling Stones. There has been an outpouring of reactions to the passing, with celebrities and peers from Paul McCartney to Questlove sharing messages. Now, two of his surviving bandmates have also paid tribute to Watts. In separate Instagram posts, both Mick Jagger and Keith Richards shared images in memory of their longtime bandmate. The former posted an image of a smiling Watts in action, a fitting way to remember the steady stickman known for his constant beaming behind his kit. It’s also nice to know this is how Jagger choose to remember him, rather than the time Watts punched Jagger for calling him “my drummer.” Richards, meanwhile, posted an image of Watts’ drum set with a “C...
Spencer Elden, who was famously photographed as a baby for Nirvana’s iconic Nevermind album cover, is suing the band for child sexual exploitation. The lawsuit comes just a month shy of the landmark album’s 30th anniversary. One of the most famous album covers of all time, Nevermind depicts a then four-month-old Elden swimming naked underwater as he reaches for a dollar bill. As the story goes, Elden was the son of a friend of album photographer Kurt Weddle. Nirvana’s label, Geffen, initially objected to Elden’s penis being visible, but Kurt Cobain insisted it not be censored. The Nirvana frontman at one point said his only compromise would be a strategically placed sticker that read, “If you’re offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile.” According to TMZ, Elden has now filed a laws...
Here’s some news that’ll make you want to “Break Ya Neck”: a clip has resurfaced of a Busta Rhymes performance from earlier this summer, during which the legendary MC went on a heated rant slamming mask mandates in the wake of spiking COVID-19 cases. Back in June, just as concerns about the Delta variant took precedence in the US, Busta voiced his ill-advised frustrations during his set as the surprise headliner at the Seoul Taco’s 10th anniversary block party in Missouri. The clip is now being recirculated on social media. “This is my second show in front of human life in the last 15 fucking months,” the rapper told the crowd in-between cheers. “COVID can suck a dick. All these little weird-ass government policies and mandates — suck a dick.” “It’s called the God-given right of freedom, r...
Tom Morello is readying the rollout of a new album that in many ways reshaped his creative approach. Amid the pandemic, the iconic Rage Against the Machine guitarist faced his first creative drought. Despite being admittedly “Type A” when it comes to his recording process, which he has historically done alongside an engineer, Morello broke his own rules by recording straight into his phone. Paradoxically, it was one of the most liberating creative decisions he could have made. After sending around those homemade riffs, an album concept began to take shape. And it was rapidly heading into uncharted territory—the literal top of the world. Morello and Mike Posner‘s collaborative album cut was recorded as the latter was scaling Mount Everest, a trek he ...
An unintentional slip of the tongue from New Zealand’s COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins could be a catalyst for the career of one local music producer. At a press conference over the weekend, Hipkins was addressing the notion that Kiwis living in high-density areas face the struggle of being unable to get outside without posing a risk to public health. However, in the moment he used some awkward phrasing, leading to a blunder in which he said Kiwis were looking to get out and “spread their legs” instead of “stretch their legs.” The gaffe wasn’t lost on anybody, including local dance music radio station George FM, who are now calling on music producers and DJs to give their best attempt at remixing the humorous audio clip. The station is off...
Chicago-based vocalist, guitarist, and bass music producer BVLVNCE has unveiled his debut album Alchemical Transmutation, a genre-defiant body of work inspired by post-hardcore and punk music and released via Recall Records. With the aim of addressing the stigma surrounding mental health, BVLVNCE has delivered an introspective yet rip-roaring record. Often compared to Kayzo, Sullivan King, and Micah Martin, his new album, he says, represents a mental and spiritual journey of an alchemist using arcane powers of the natural world, to achieve inner transformation and self-actualization. Spanning seven tracks, Alchemical Transmutation is a gritty testament not only to BVLVNCE’s versatility in the studio, but also his dedication to melding metal and electronic mus...
Now that Swedish House Mafia have returned with new music, it seems they’re ready to take it on the road. Since the iconic trio’s ballyhooed resurgence this summer, they’ve remained typically tight-lipped about their plans. Their social media channels have essentially been re-skinned as cryptic promotional conduits, fleshed out with obscure captions about their new singles “Lifetime” and “It Gets Better.” And while fans have been able to sip on some hot tea, like a potential collaboration with The Weeknd, the group’s immediate future has largely remained a mystery. Swedish House Mafia member Sebastian Ingrosso has now fanned the flames of speculation surrounding the group’s return to touring. In an Ins...
