Sex, Drugs and No Genres: How Industrial Visionaries Coil Invented the Future Three Decades Ago

Great artists use their talents to blow minds and fill up hearts. If you can’t do that, change your course or leave the room. But assuming you’ve already got those bases covered, can you predict the future? What would you call a band who made significant sonic advancements, refused to hide their sexuality and fomented a mindset of creativity sans fronteres that succeeding generations are copping as their own? We’d call them Coil. In the mid-‘80s, the duo of Geoff Rushton (aka Jhonn Balance) and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson teamed to create their own idiosyncratic zeitgeist in the realm of industrial music. The latter was a polymath that was part of the legendary unit Throbbing Gristle, who used the i-word to describe their sonic mutations that were often regarded as both compelling and re...

Third Eye Blind fans can step back from that ledge, as the pop-rockers just released a new single from their upcoming album, Our Bande Apart (out September 24 via Megacollider Records). But not only is “Again” the latest track and video revealed by the ’90s chart-toppers, and it also features an appearance from Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino. “It’s noteworthy that I wrote this blissed out shoegaze song during the most lockdown part of the pandemic,” vocalist Stephan Jenkins tells SPIN. “As I was writing it, I could just hear Bethany’s voice, so I feel so fortunate that she was down to sing on it with us. This record was made with all of us playing together in the same room after being away from each other for a long time. To me, it sounds like a bunch of people who love each other excited ...

Justin Timberlake Was Filmed Working at Target & Lance Bass Has a Joke About It

Justin Timberlake is dishing out some top-notch service! The singer apparently got to work recently, and not in a suit and tie. No, Timberlake was filmed by a Target shopper not browsing the aisles, but seemingly working the cash register at the retailer. In a clip shared to TikTok Thursday (Aug. 19), Timberlake — dressed in a pullover jacket and Montana beanie — can be seen scanning a tin of Ice Breakers as the shopper tells him he got a drink and a speaker. JT then asks, “What else did you want?” The shopper responded that he’d like some gum too, so the pop superstar grabs the item from the shelf next to him, and scans that too before confusingly putting it back on the display. “Justin Timberlake said post this for the naysayers,” TikToker Dougla...

Every Song Ranked on Lorde’s ‘Solar Power’: Critic’s List

Below, Billboard ranks every track on Lorde’s third album: 12. “Dominoes” “Dominoes” is a pretty little song, it’s just not the one you go back to again and again after hearing it for the first time. Recorded at Electric Lady Studios with the doors open, one cool feature of this track is that some of the ambient noises from outside fill up the background. “You can hear a lot of sirens because there were a ton of protests that summer,” she wrote for Spotify. “I like that it sounds like how that summer sounded.” 11. “Leader of a New Regime” This track is a quick, just slightly confusing break from the world where most of the other songs on Solar Power take place. Lorde harmonizes with herself in stacked, crackling vocal lines — now a certified hallmark of ...

Someone Successfully Copyrighted a ‘Magic: The Gathering’ Deck

Someone has just managed to successfully copyright his own Magic: The Gathering deck of cards. According to reports, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Michigan and known legal provocateur by the name of Dr. Robert Hovden copyrighted his own personal deck of cards. The story broke from journalist Cory Doctorow, who revealed that Hovden’s filing at the United States Copyright Office was successful, but raised a number of concerns for other players within the Magic: The Gathering world. “Hovden’s public communications around this tease that he may prohibit others from using this deck in tournament play, and says it’s all about ‘owning culture and people’s participation in culture through copyright,’” wrote Doctorow. The filing has no doubt c...
