Todd McFarlane’s ‘King Spawn’ #1 Breaks Record With 500,000 Pre-Orders

Todd McFarlane has kept his word in declaring that 2021 would be the year of Spawn. It has just been reported by Image Comics that King Spawn #1, the first new monthly Spawn book since 1992, is on its way to sell over 500,000 copies in pre-orders. Set for an August 25 release, this is another massive milestone for independent comic book creators as it nearly reaches the success that Keanu Reeves had with BRZRKR at 616,841 copies — both outside of the Big Two’s (Marvel Comics and DC Comics) influence. For years, overall comic book sales have been on the decline, and when you stack the original Spawn #1‘s 1.7 million in copies sold, the difference is apparent. In fact, there were only six comics to break the 100,000 mark in June. McFarlane comments on the success of the upcoming title with: ...

Speaking to Variety, executive producer Brad Winderbaum confirmed that the studio has “multiple” animated series “in various phases of development” to hit Disney+, along with season two of What If…? and “photo-real” animated shorts focusing on Baby Groot. He shared that the creative freedom Marvel Studios has with animation was a big factor in the development of new titles, “We realized that there’s a lot of cool avenues you can explore with animation,” He added, “Any project that we create is going to be something that needs to be animated in order for the story to be told. There’s very little desire to take a piece of IP that’s popular because we’re comin...

‘Chainsaw Man’ Continues to Lead in Top 20 Adult Graphic Novel Sales

NPD Bookscan has just published its July report on the top adult graphic novels sold, and for the first time in four months, non-manga books made it onto the top 10 list. While it is no surprise that manga is becoming ever so popular, increasing 44 percent in 2020 alone, the findings are showing that there’s a new wave of manga readers looking for the classics, as titles like Attack on Titan Vol.1, Hunter x Hunter Vol. 1, Death Note Vol.1, Naruto Vol.1, and Junji Ito’s horror manga series Tomie are all spiking in sales. As for the non-manga titles, Clint McElroy’s The Adventure Zone: The Crystal Kingdom in both paperback and hardcover along with Chugong’s Solo Leveling Vol.2 are standing out in the sea of Viz Media offerings. Both have been supported consistently by fans and have done well...

Core ad revenue, which is adjusted for political and advocacy ads, rose 70 percent. Media networks unit ad revenue increased 66 percent, or 63 percent when looking at core results. “The increase in media networks core advertising revenue was due to higher ad revenue driven by new brand activations, strong scatter volume and pricing, growth in previously low volume accounts, two major soccer tournaments, and improvements in the auto, retail, and beverage sectors, which are recovering from the negative impacts of COVID-19,” the company said.
