Adia Victoria has announced her forthcoming third album, A Southern Gothic, and shared the LP’s lead single “Magnolia Blues.” The 11-track studio studio offering is set to arrive September 17th via Canvasback Music and Atlantic Records. It features collaborations with everyone from Stone Jack Jones (“My Oh My”) and The National’s Matt Berninger (album closer “South for the Winter”) to Jason Isbell, Margo Price, and Kyshona Armstrong (the star-studded “You Was Born to Die”). Victoria recorded A Southern Gothic in both Paris in late 2019 and during the chaos of the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement, she said she “wanted the album to be a time stamp of where I was in 2020. I wanted to pay homage and be honest to what I had to work with. I didn’t feel the need to go back and change it ...
Despite being a ’90s teen rom-com favorite, She’s All That barely held up at the time of its release in 1999. The whole “transform an outsider into a popular kid so that everyone can learn lessons about themselves” thing reinforced the grossness of high school hierarchy as much as anything. Now that social media has made teenagers that much more judgmental, it’s apparently time to reiterate those lessons with a remake. Netflix is releasing the gender-swapped He’s All That on August 27th, and the streamer has today delivered the first trailer. From the looks of it, She’s All That screenwriter R. Lee Fleming and Mean Girls director Mark Walters decided to take all the worst parts of the original and make it 2021. TikTok star (aka content thief, aka not an actress) Addison Rae plays Padg...
For those who like initials, here’s some WTF about Louis C.K. As Deadline notes, the embattled comedian who admitted to numerous allegations of sexual misconduct has announced a massive US standup tour, spanning 50 shows in 30 cities. The trek launches next week with a two-night stand at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. It’s not clear how much say they had, but that’s at least two big brands — the streaming giant Hulu, and James Dolan, owner of MSG, the New York Knicks, and the New York Rangers — who have not objected to having their name associated with C.K. Huh! To be fair, the comedian’s transgressions are in a different category from some of the other faces of the #MeToo movement. He isn’t a convicted serial rapist like Harvey Weinstein, or an alleged pedophile like...
The singer went on, telling her fans to seek out education and move on for the sake of progress. “It’s easier to cancel someone than to find forgiveness and compassion in ourselves or take the time to change hearts and minds,” she wrote. “There’s no more room for division if we want to keep seeing progress! Knowledge is power! I know I still have so much to learn!” In the caption for her post, Cyrus tagged DaBaby to open up a dialogue. “@DaBaby check your DMs – would love to talk and see how we can learn from each other and help be part of making a more just and understanding future,” she wrote, tagging Greater Than Aids as a “great resource,” as well as her own Happy Hippie Foundation. Cyrus’ post comes aft...
“To see people without masks inside — gambling, clubbing with the bottle service — it was like, ‘Alright. We’re back.'” For the first time in 15 months, live music is returning nationwide after the global coronavirus pandemic ravaged the industry. Billboard’s “My First Show Back” is a series dedicated to sharing stories from throughout the touring ecosystem about what’s happening now, what has been forever altered and what will never change. In this installment, ICM Partners’ Mitch Blackman talks about his client Blackbear performing at the grand opening of the new Money, Baby! club at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas on July 9, which fell on the first week of major events returning to Sin City. In addition, Blackman details his strategy for ...
The Weeknd‘s video for his upcoming single “Take My Breath” will no longer air in IMAX theaters this week as intended due to its “intense strobe lighting,” Billboard can confirm. Earlier this week, The Weeknd shared the heart-thumping, synth-heavy instrumentals of “Take My Breath” in a nearly two-minute clip that captured the essence of his next musical era, “the dawn.” He later previewed more of the single in an official promo for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo that spotlighted the U.S. women’s track & field team. “Take My Breath,” as the Olympics clip indicates, is set to be released this Friday. Its accompanying visual was slated to air in IMAX theaters before this week’s opening sho...
Born in Chicago in 1971, Johnson began DJing in the mid-’80s while still a teenager. Expanding into production in 1990, he went on to release hundreds of records over the next three decades for labels such as Peacefrog, Moody Recordings, Dance Mania and Cajual. His 1999 single “Get Get Down,” from his album The Groove I Have, spent 18 weeks on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, where it ultimately hit No. 1. The song was an international hit as well, topping RPM’s Top 30 Dance chart in Canada and going top 10 in Greece, Belgium, France, the Netherlands and the UK. Johnson also started the Dust Traxx label with Radek Hawryszczuk in 1997, which has released music from producers including K-Alexi, Stacy Kidd, Glenn Underground and Robert Armani. Johnson’s legacy as a house music great is per...
