Mining Metal: Dungeon Serpent, Hellish Form, Lantlos, Mesa, Midwife, Mordred, Night Crowned, Sallow Moth

As I write this introduction, I’ve just found out about the passing of Mike Howe, vocalist of the criminally underrated band Metal Church. He was 55 years old — too young. The last time I memorialized a musician in this column, it was Entombed vocalist L.G. Petrov. Howe’s story differs from Petrov’s in two critical ways. First, because Petrov’s passing was unfortunate but expected, whereas Howe’s was surprising. Second, while Petrov and Entombed had gone their separate ways, the band had achieved notoriety commensurate with their artistic output. In contrast, Howe had been an active member of Metal Church at the time of his death. Despite 40 years of existence, the band isn’t as well known as they deserve to be. Metal Church was one of the Seattle-area ’80s heavy metal bands that, alongsid...

Dua Lipa Honors Pop Smoke in Lavish “Demeanor” Music Video

Dua Lipa is taking it back to the 19th century in a new music video for her song “Demeanor” featuring late rapper Pop Smoke. The high-production video opens with Lipa touching up her makeup before joining her guests at a Victorian dinner party, powdered wigs and all. In frilly Victorian garb, the guests dance in the dining room as Lipa sings about serving that “je ne sais quoi energy,” styled by Lorenzo Posocco in a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier corset from the designer’s 1998 collection. In the background of the party, a moving painting depicts different versions of Smoke and white doves, and at the end of the video, the camera concentrates on the painting as the music fades in a concluding tribute to the rapper. While announcing the release of the video on Instagram, Lipa thanked Pop Smoke’...

On the Ground at Lollapalooza: How Are the Festival’s COVID-19 Protocols Holding Up?

When Lollapalooza announced its return to Chicago back in May, it felt like one more positive sign of a return to some kind of post-pandemic normal. Flash forward to this week, and the sentiment around Chicago has become far more ambivalent; stalling COVID-19 vaccination rates and the emergence of the dangerous Delta variant led prominent local music critics to label the festival a potential superspreader event. Jim DeRogatis of Sound Opinions went as far as to call for Lollapalooza’s cancellation. “They can’t control their own gates,” DeRogatis told Chicago’s WTTW. “Why are we supposed to believe that they are going to be diligent about checking for vaccination?” Lollapalooza’s COVID-19 mitigation plan is comprehensive on paper. The festival website’s Health and Safety section sets out a ...

Scarlett Johansson Sues Disney Over Black Widow Streaming Release [Updated]

Scarlett Johansson is suing Disney over the company’s decision to stream Black Widow on its Disney+ platform at the same time as its theatrical release. According to the Wall Street Journal, Johansson filed the suit in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, accusing Disney of breaching its contract with her over the release of Black Widow and thus preventing Johansson “from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.” As Johansson’s salary was based in large part on the box office performance of Black Widow, Disney’s decision to put the film on Disney+ cost the actress as much as $50 million, a person familiar with details of her contract told WSJ. Bobby Shmurda, J Balvin and Daddy Yankee Turn Up on Eladio Carrión’s “TATA” Remix

Latin trap rapper Eladio Carrión has remixed his Monarca track “TATA” with new features from Bobby Shmurda and Daddy Yankee and a repeat performance from the song’s original collaborator J Balvin. The remix arrived with a music video shot in Puerto Rico and New York, directed by Jose Sagaro, Jon J Visuals and Squid. Carrion and Balvin shift between Spanish and English before Shmurda slides in to drop bars from onboard an MTA bus. “Just came home off a lock-up,” Shmurda raps, referring to his release from prison earlier this year after serving over six years. The rapper also shouts out his close friend Quavo, who had picked him up from prison in a private jet. Last weekend, Shmurda made a surprise appearance at Rolling Loud Miami for a brief 20-minute set, performing his collaboration with ...

‘The Princess Diaries’ at 20: How a Perfect Pop Soundtrack Was Born

And like many great films that attain cult status, behind Princess Diaries is a great soundtrack. The music of The Princess Diaries was a product of its time, crafted following the height of boy bands and bubblegum pop. In 2001, the Billboard charts were led by R&B-tinged pop songs like the star-studded “Lady Marmalade,” Janet Jackson’s “All For You” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious.” Also, thanks to bands like The Strokes, there was an eruption of post-punk revivalists and a new wave of rock players gaining fame. Both the state of pop and the changing face of rock music would be integral to the music of The Princess Diaries. It was also a time when movie soundtracks, particularly for coming-of-age films, were celebrated. From Br...
