Welcome to the fourth edition of Difficult Fun! Each month, SPIN will spotlight the best punk on the planet and discuss it here, with the ambition of challenging preconceived notions of what the four-letter word actually means and, ideally, entertaining readers in the process. Purists, piss off! Everyone else, enjoy. Apathy is one hell of a drug. Live shows are back, the COVID-19 Delta variant is wreaking havoc across the globe, infections are climbing, and if there was ever a time to lean into easy, convenient nihilism, our current sci-fi dystopia is it. And yet, I’ve noticed a sense of optimism in punk – there might be no future but let’s fight for the present – and it is energizing. Or, you know, the world is still full of shit and I’m simply projecting, but this is my column and I’ll c...

Exodus Drummer Tom Hunting Is Cancer Free After Undergoing Total Gastrectomy

Exodus drummer Tom Hunting recently underwent a total gastrectomy (removal of the stomach), and it appears the surgery was a success. The veteran thrash musician is now cancer free, according to a post on bandmate Gary Holt’s Instagram account. Earlier this month, Hunting announced that he would be undergoing the procedure in his effort to battle squamous cell carcinoma of the stomach. A total gastrectomy removes the entire stomach and parts of any neighboring organs affected by the cancer. The end of the esophagus is then attached to the small intestine to allow for digestion. While he must recover and adjust to his new digestive system, the message posted on Holt’s Instagram offers an encouraging outlook: “Tom has been home for around a week now, is doing very well despite the pain, is e...

In February, the Philadelphia rapper first debuted the pink Elliot Eliantte diamond that he’d gotten placed right in the center of his forehead. Uzi claimed the diamond was “10 almost 11 carats,” with a spokesperson for Elliot Eliantte saying the implant was, safety-wise, comparable to more everyday body modifications. But of course, even the most standard piercings are prone to infection if not properly cared for; In June, the Et...
