RATING: 7.5/10 You very well might be picking up your jaw from the floor after hearing any 20-second excerpt from OPHIDIAN I‘s new album, “Desolate”, by virtue of the dizzying, intricate barrage of blasting, soloing and riff-work at hand. The Icelandic band has been touted as a newcomer, but that isn’t exactly the case. Formed in 2010 and following an impressive demo in 2011 and their debut album “Solvet Saeclum” the next year, the band was essentially shelved (aside from releasing the “Whence They Came” single in 2014), yet not abandoned. During the unit’s extensive period of inactivity, guitarist Símon Þórólfsson spent time with the black metal project HELFRO and bassist Þórður Hermannsson was involved with the heavy rock act LIGHTSPE...
EXODUS drummer Tom Hunting has undergone a successful total gastrectomy, less than five months after he started treatment for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the stomach. Hunting‘s EXODUS bandmate Gary Holt took to his Instagram about 45 minutes after the completion of the surgery — which lasted between four and five hours — and said that “everything went according to plan.” He added: “Gastrectomy complete, heavily sedated but all cancer and mesothelioma nodules removed. He’s a warrior.” He went on to thank the fans “for all the positive vibes.” According to Cancer.org, a total gastrectomy is done if the cancer has spread widely in the stomach. It is also often advised if the cancer is in the upper part of the stomach, near the esophagus. On...
Scott Ian has been ripping up stages for over 40 years now in ANTHRAX, but one of his earliest appearances was at an elementary talent show in fourth grade school and it was a far cry from his thrash metal career. Watch the video below from Jackson Guitars as he goes down memory lane with the first few songs he learned to play on guitar, including THE SURFARIS version of “Wipe Out”. Back in 2018, Ian told the “Sixx Sense” radio show that started playing guitar when he was eight years old, around 1971 or 1972. “So everything from the ’70s for me was — I was just learning, learning, learning,” he said. “I would sit at home with the records and just learn the chords. And that thing has a lot to do with why I stuck to rhythm and becoming a rhythm...

Back in March, Thom Yorke created a new remix of the Radiohead classic “Creep” to soundtrack fashion designer Jun Takahashi’s Undercover Fall 2021 fashion show Creep Very. Now, Yorke has officially released the full version of the song, and you can stream it ahead. As fans are well aware, Radiohead aren’t exactly fans of the Pablo Honey, often only playing it reluctantly as it’s “expected” at this point in their career. So perhaps, then, it’s not terribly surprising that Yorke has chosen to make the song worse for what’s called “Creep (Very 2021 Rmx).” Slowed down like someone’s dragging a record to the point that Yorke’s vocals sound like a techno-codeine trip, the song is more than twice as long as the original cut. It’s also credited to “Thom Yorke featuring Radiohead,” which hurts...
When Donald Trump entered the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for UFC 264 over the weekend, he was greeted by a chorus of “U-S-A” to drown out the scattered boos. But one other attendee gave the ex-POTUS a special hailing, as video shows Mel Gibson saluting Trump as he walked to his seat. Saturday’s headline bout between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirer drew a star-studded crowd, bringing out everyone from Dave Chappelle to Justin Bieber. Trump’s attendance wasn’t terribly surprising, as UFC head Dana White is his longtime friend, and Irish national/ultimate heel McGregor once called the head of a recently indicted organization a “phenomenal” president. And to be fair, events like UFC are unifying regardless of political affiliation. Still, watching Gibson, a man known for his bigoted and craz...
