DJ Matt Black Drops Tech House Thumper “Tha Freak”

DJ Matt Black has arrived with “Tha Freak,” delivering a club-driven tech house bomb for the masses. Black wastes no time here, kicking off the track with a driving kick-snare pattern serenaded by a chugging bassline. He eventually introduces the song’s main vocal refrain, “Let me see you turn into the freak,” which invites listeners to release their inhibitions—a motif we can all agree with after a year in isolation. A long bridge builds the tension as the producer filters in punchy snares, ultimately culminating in a catchy house drop. It’s here where the groovy song really hits its stride, thanks to the clever use of cowbells and crisp open hi-hats. “Tha Freak” does well to incorporate sounds of the underground as well as the mod...

Listen to a Previously Unheard George Harrison Demo, ‘Cosmic Empire’

Not too long ago, details were revealed of a massive box set for George Harrison’s classic solo debut album All Things Must Pass. The first song from that set has been released, and it’s a good one. For the first time, you can hear “Cosmic Empire,” and the story behind the song is almost as good as the song itself. According to a release, when Harrison commenced work on what would be All Things Must Pass, Harrison cooked up a whole batch of songs in the first two days, including a bunch that were unreleased. “Cosmic Empire” was one of the songs from the second day (May 27, 1970). The tune was cut with former Beatles bandmate Ringo Starr on drums, bassist Klaus Voormann and Phil Spector producing. The other songs that didn’t make the cut on All Things Must Pass include “Going Down To G...

18-Year-Old Pokémon TCG Site PokeBeach Hacked for Attempted Ransom

With an ever-growing interest in Pokémon trading cards, a group of professional hackers decided to meddle with the 18-year-old site, PokeBeach, in an attempt to blackmail the site’s creator, Jon Sahagian. The hackers tampered with the popular Pokémon TCG site last week as they deleted approximately two decades of files from the servers and continued to run scripts in order to remove backup files. According to Sahagian, also known as Water Pokémon Master, the hackers aimed to hold a copy of the site hostage in exchange for payment. Their efforts were halted by the site’s hosts right after the backup files have been deleted, so the site’s archive of news articles, forum posts and user data were not affected. “I consider PokeBeach a monument to the Pokemon TCG,” stated Sahagian in the explana...

After signing an exclusive deal with Twitch, he pivoted to streaming full-time, but less than a year later, reentered the rap scene on June 16 with the statement “I’m back,” — a nod to Michael Jordan’s iconic NBA return announcement. “I retired, but I’ve been making...

Deftones Postpone North American Tour with Gojira Until Spring 2022

One of 2021’s most highly anticipated tours will have to wait until 2022. Deftones have just announced that they’re postponing their summer North American outing with Gojira until next spring. The news comes roughly one month before the tour was supposed to kick off. As it was, the tour had already been postponed from 2020 due to the pandemic. Despite the fact that many bands will start touring again this summer and fall, Deftones felt that “uncertainty still remains in different markets throughout the country,” and decided that it would be best to wait until next year. The rescheduled trek will now take place in the spring, kicking off April 14th in Portland, Oregon, and running through May 28th in Minneapolis. The new itinerary includes three added dates in Las Vegas, Cincinnati, and Nas...
