Oakland, California-based duo tUnE-yArDs have shared a new song and animated video for “hold yourself,” off their just-announced fifth studio album, sketchy. The 11-track record, which includes last year’s single “nowhere, man,” arrives March 26 on 4AD. “This song is about feeling really betrayed, by my parents’ generation, and at the same time, really seeing how we are betraying the future,” the band’s Merrill Garbus explains in a statement. The new music was initially inspired by the Beastie Boys Book and Questlove’s Creative Quest and created with Merrill on drums and Nate Brennan on bass. “I started remembering that people come to us to be entertained, to move, to feel joy. And together, I think, we can wake up,” Garbus stated. Check out “Hold Yourself” below. [emb...
DJ Drama was in no rush to return from his lunch break. Sandwiched between the outskirts of Atlanta’s Bankhead neighborhood and the sprawling campus of Georgia Tech University is Means Street Studios. This hub of hip hop recording has played host to a litany of stars since its 2013 inception. Playboi Carti, Gucci Mane, Lil Uzi Vert and the late Nipsey Hussle are just some of the artists who’ve graced its halls. However, on this day in November 2017, the Means Street corridors were not especially glamorous. Atlantic Records had selected the studio complex to host its quarterly A&R conference in which DJ Drama, legendary mixtape arbiter and co-founder of Atlantic’s Generation Now imprint (Lil Uzi Vert, Killuminati), played a significant role. Overnight success stories often begin at conf...
Leto was really sold on the pair’s talent when he invited them to play a tiny show at his house during a dinner party for 12 people, where they blew the A-list guests away. “I said, ‘Hey, will you guys come and play a couple of songs?’ and they were, like, ‘Yeah, sure,’ and they showed up with a Guitar Center p.a. and played the most heartbreakingly beautiful music with, like, you know, it shouldn’t have sounded that good, it was impossible that it sounded that good,” he said. “I remember Leo DiCaprio was there and a couple of other people and they were just, like, ‘How did you find these people and, like, who are they?’ Everyone was just jaws on the floor, 12 people max at my place in the hills. Yeah, just great people. I...

When a fan said they thought the tests were free, Cardi explained that it’s free when you go to your doctor’s office, but “when it’s for work and you gotta have people test you at your home is not.” That said, Cardi wasn’t complaining about the cost because she knows the legal and health ramifications if she doesn’t do everything she can to keep herself and her team safe. “It’s necessary because if you in my space and you get Covid I can get sued. If I do a commercial and I get Covid the company can get sued,” she said. “Its all about not being a liability and is a requirement. The government should be paying for healthcare workers we pay out our own pockets.” When another user noted that Cardi is lucky that she has the luxur...
A rocking memorial mural for late Van Halen guitar legend Eddie Van Halen has gone up outside the flagship Hollywood location of Guitar Center. The painting of EVH in mid screaming guitar solo on one of his signature Frankenstrats, mouth agape, is surrounded by his initials in giant VH font. “In honor of @eddievanhalen‘s birthday, we unveiled an incredible tribute by artist @therobertvargas today at GC Hollywood,” wrote the mega instrument retailer on Instagram on Tuesday (Jan. 26) about the 17-foot tall, 105-foot long painting. “This mural celebrates the passion and virtuosity of Eddie’s playing that has and will continue to inspire generations of musicians. Take a closer look in our stories!” Eddie’s son and former bandmate, Wolfg...
For fans of last month’s Jenny Lewis and Serengeti team-up for “Unblu,” the dynamic duo are back with another (very different) track. Although “Vroom Vroom” stays with a bit of the slower-paced, relaxing vibe of their original collaboration, it goes in an entirely new way with its retro-futuristic pop sound. It sounds less like floating through the clouds and more like taking a late-night trip to a diner because you can’t sleep (you know, back in the pre-COVID days when it was safe to do such things). Much like the duo’s first track, “Vroom Vroom” features a phone-shot video directed by Lewis. Although this one features decidedly fewer bouncing balls than its predecessor, it’s a good reminder that our favorite musicians are stuck at home with their phones a lot of the time, just like the r...
“The challenge was to find the balance of humor, darkness and sincerity,” says Auckland, New Zealand artist, multi-instrumentalist and producer Mark Perkins (a.k.a. Merk) of his new single/video “GOD,” premiering today, here on SPIN. “It had to come across as, not ironic, but playfully self-aware of the weirdness of this song while also being profoundly heartfelt. Fun but touching was the goal!” Perkins honed his producing skills under the mentorship of Crowded House’s (now Fleetwood Mac’s) Neil Finn while working at Auckland’s Roundhead Studios. His 2017 debut album Swordfish went on to win Best Debut Album at the Taite Music Prize (New Zealand’s equivalent of the Mercury or Polaris Prize) and led to tours with Cub Sport, Marlon Williams and Julia Jacklin in both Australia and New Zealand...

Keeping that 2020 energy going into January, Westside Gunn drops some visuals for his Who Made The Sunshine album cut, “Liz Loves Luger” which finds Armani Ceasar helping Gunn dispose of a body in a hotel. Talk about a ride-or-die chick. Shorty didn’t mind getting her manicured hands dirty. Props. Back in Harlem Dave East hangs in front of the bodega with his crew while stuntin’ in front of a few Benzes for his clip to “Mercedes Talk.” Lowkey wondering why he ain’t drive the whip for the video but whatever.
