Former SEPULTURA and current SOULFLY frontman Max Cavalera spoke to the “Scars And Guitars” about his tendency to occasionally address societal and political issues in his music. “I still enjoy political messages, and some of them are quite strong,” he said (hear audio below). “If you look at an album like [SEPULTURA‘s] ‘Chaos A.D.’, even though it was done [nearly 30 years] ago, it seems like a lot of those songs fit the world right now perfectly — like a glove — even more than when it was written. Or [Max‘s 1990s side project] NAILBOMB. NAILBOMB [is] the perfect example. We were doing a tour [where we performed the songs from] NAILBOMB two years ago, and it was fantastic, and kind of creepy, how those songs that were 20 years old, the...
Stone Gossard and Eddie Vedder have been making music together for 30 years, and while some relationships may get stale after the three-decade mark, the Pearl Jam guitarist feels a different sentiment: his singer is his “muse.” During a recent interview with Kerrang!, Gossard opened up about that relationship. “I write every song for Eddie, ultimately,” he confessed. “He’s my muse. I would love to write 50 songs a year with him, but it’s just not on the cards; it just doesn’t work like that for him. When he’s in a writing process, it’s different than it is for me. I can write all the time. The way Ed really operates, the way that he loves to get music, is for something that’s immediate for you coming in at a time when he’s ready to connect with it. He likes to be in the process w...
Hours after Miley Cyrus released her new album Plastic Hearts, “Hannah Montana” was trending on Twitter, with fans nodding to the similarities between the superstar’s new opus and her early pop-rock sound as a Disney star. It’s a reductive comparison, for a few reasons — no Hannah Montana album ever featured Billy Idol, for one, or included a chorus that starts with an urgent “What the f–k do I know!” — but most importantly, Cyrus’ glam-rock pivot draws upon her decade of delivering whip-smart lyrics and enormous hooks to arrive fully formed and often spectacular. As electric guitar solos careen into each other and drums crash in with arena-ready heft, Cyrus relies upon her sharpened pop instincts to tackle the sonic exploration; witness “Angels Like You,” a lighters-up, ...

Doug Aldrich has recounted his wife’s battle with COVID-19, calling it a “very difficult” experience. The former WHITESNAKE/DIO and current THE DEAD DAISIES guitarist revealed his wife’s positive diagnosis during an appearance on a video podcast hosted by Todd Kerns, the bassist of SLASH FEATURING MYLES KENNEDY AND THE CONSPIRATORS. Doug said (see video below): “My wife got COVID… Basically, she got it from a girlfriend — it was like a mothers’ wine hangout Sunday. And she found out later that the girl had been positive. And I was, like, ‘Oh, man.’ So she went into quarantine. She tested negative twice. And I thought, ‘Okay, we’re out of the woods. She can come out of her room, and let my daughter go back to school.’ And the...
Earlier this year, CRO-MAGS released their first album in twenty years with the critically acclaimed “In The Beginning”. To close out this year of international turmoil and disease, the band has announced the six-song EP “2020”, available worldwide digitally on December 11. CRO-MAGS also released the EP’s title track, venting all the frustration and rage, CRO-MAGS style, at the unprecedented chaos of this year. The record itself is unintentionally 20 minutes and 20 seconds, and plays out more like a time-capsule look into the dumpster fire known as the year 2020. CRO-MAGS founder Harley Flanagan explains: “Just by coincidence we recorded 20 minutes and 16 seconds of music, so we simply added a few seconds of real-world chaos. “The album cover is me...
In the latest issue of Rock Candy magazine, YES guitarist Trevor Rabin reveals the unbelievable story of how the band’s 1983 tour in support of phenomenally successful comeback album “90125” and No. 1 U.S. hit “Owner Of A Lonely Heart” was put in jeopardy after an unfortunate accident. “We were in a hotel swimming pool in Miami sipping champagne to celebrate the global success of ‘Owner Of A Lonely Heart’,” Rabin told Rock Candy writer Malcolm Dome. “There was a water slide very close to me that I hadn’t really noticed. Suddenly a very large woman came hurtling down the slide and crashed straight into me. The collision was so bad that it ruptured my spleen and put me in hospital. I needed an operation and was out of action f...
DREAM THEATER guitarist John Petrucci has confirmed that the band is using the coronavirus downtime to commence the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to last year’s “Distance Over Time” album. “As a band, we did decide to pivot and we entered the studio a couple of weeks ago,” he said during an appearance on the “Talk Is Jericho” podcast (hear audio below). “We’re working on the new album. Because that’s what we do — if we can’t play live, let’s make music together. That’s what we’re doing now. We’re already off to a great start. It’ll be out sometime next year.” In a separate chat with “The Everyman Podcast”, DREAM THEATER singer James LaBrie revealed that he opted to sta...
Dubstep fans are receiving a new headbanger to get them through the next leg of lockdown, and it comes from rising act Eazley. Today he’s unveiled “Babylon Weak”—his new single that is not for the faint of heart— via WaterShip Rec’s. The track sees the blossoming electronic music producer drawing inspiration from his time in Hawaii during quarantine, which he infuses into his aggressive bass stylings. “Baylon Weak” opens with a slow and steady approach, but don’t get too comfortable. He keeps his fans on their toes when he introduces the depravity of the drop. It’s the right blend of angst and chill that makes for easy home listening now that riding the rails is off the table. Eazley is a graduate of Icon Collective, the Los Angele...
An investigation has been launched after a 28-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by a police dog during a raid on an illicit Halloween rave near Bristol. The Guardian reports that police were called to the scene of an illegal warehouse rave around 10:30PM ten miles from Bristol, in a small town called Yate, on Halloween night. The rave had been going for nearly 24 hours before police arrived. When police arrived, hundreds of partygoers were flushed out of the warehouse when a police dog was allegedly set loose on Jessica Mae Andrew without warning. “The officers opened their wall of shields up slightly and the next minute the dog was mauling the top of my leg,” Andrew told The Guardian. “My leg is totally a different shape now as it pulled so much fat f...
The EDM community is still reeling from the death of Garrett Lockhart, who to friends, fans, and fellow music producers was affectionately known as i_o. Following Lockhart’s tragic and sudden passing, a deluge of tributes flooded social media from many of his contemporaries, including deadmau5, NGHTMRE, and REZZ, among many others. One of the artists to pay homage to the prodigious producer was fellow techno artist and mau5trap linchpin No Mana, who called him a “partner in crime” and a “brother” in a poignant thread dedicated to his late friend. On this day in 2018 (November 27th), No Mana and i_o released their collaborative track “Bad Things,” a pulsing techno bomb that went on to appear on the former’s Melted Candy EP. Close fri...
The gift of the Thanksgiving gods smiles upon us this day, as we awaken from our turkey-and-stuffing-induced comas, slide over to Disney+, and find another episode of The Mandalorian awaiting us, “The Jedi”. Finally, after half a season of standalone adventures, we finally make some progress in Din Djarin’s (Pedro Pascal) mission to bring Baby Yoda back to his people, the Jedi. Along the way, we meet yet another old friend from the animated shows, an even older friend from ’80s genre classics, and learn perhaps a bit too much about Mando’s adorable young charge. Let’s go over everything we learned, and a few things non-animated show watchers might not know about this week’s special guest. Of course, it goes without saying that there are some major, major spoilers ahead. You must be ca...
