Brittany Howard Covers Nina Simone’s “Revolution” on Colbert: Watch

Brittany Howard received five Grammy Award nominations across four genre categories (Rock, Alternative Music, R&B, and American Roots) on Tuesday. Hours later, she appeared on Colbert, but instead of performing any of her recognized work, she chose to dig into yet another genre and perform someone else’s song. Howard delivered an impassioned blues rock rendition of Nina Simone’s “Revolution”. Matching her band’s red attire, Howard strutted about the stage like she was playing for a real live audience. It’s got to be hard to muster that sort of energy these days, but the Alabama Shakes singer barely looked like she had to dig very deep at all as she busted out the powerful performance. Of course, she’s been covering the song (itself a response to The Beatles’ “Revolution”) live for awhi...

Taylor Swift Releases folklore Live Album and Film: Stream

As promised, Taylor Swift has released her new folklore-focused film, the long pond studio sessions. The pop singer has also revealed a corresponding live album version of those sessions. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the original folklore LP was recorded remotely while in quarantine. Today’s two projects see Swift finally meeting up with her collaborators (IRL!) to perform the album live from start to finish for the first time. She, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner convened at The National’s Long Pond Studio in Hudson, New York. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, who duets with Swift on “exile”, beamed in remotely. “It’s an album that allows you to feel your feelings, and it’s a product of isolation,” Swift said in the film’s trailer. At another point, she remarked to Dessner, “This could’...

phonon Drops Wild 7-Minute Track “EMME” on Halcyon

Oolacile‘s new Halcyon imprint was conceived with the notion of pushing boundaries and propelling the sound of bass music into the future. So it’s no coincidence that one of bass music’s most intriguing producers, phonon, has been a part of the label from the start. After his divisive yet undoubtedly fresh offering “polyriddim,” phonon set his sights even higher with “conic sections,” his Halcyon debut. Hailed as the “Dream Theater of Dubstep” by Oolacile himself, phonon has returned to Halcyon with a brand new, wild offering that’s sure to stir up even more noise.  There aren’t really any clear-cut or concise ways to describe “emme,” phonon’s latest single. It’s a seven-minute trip through ...

Drum & bass super duo Koven wowed listeners with their Monstercat debut album, Butterfly Effect, back in March. A.M.C’s remix of “Followers” is a relentlessly vigorous offering from Drum&BassArena‘s 2019 “Best DJ” winner. Following up his own 2019 debut album, the aptly titled Energy, an EP release with four VIPs from the album, and a slew of impressive singles, A.M.C cranks “Followers” up to eleven with classically punchy drums, rugged bass work, and a four-to-the-floor section designed to dominate the dance floor.  The massive r...

Drake Comes to The Weeknd’s Defense Over Grammys Controversy

The R&B singer expressed his frustration toward the Recording Academy on behalf of himself, his fans and the entire music industry. “The Grammys remain corrupt,” he stated on Twitter. “You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency…” In a followup tweet, he wrote: “Collaboratively planning a performance for weeks to not being invited? In my opinion zero nominations = you’re not invited!” Now, Drake has entered the fray. “I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after,” he wrote on Instagram. “It’s like a relative you keep exp...

Latin Artist on the Rise: From Piso 21 to His Solo Career, Llane Steps Into the Popetón World

“I was scared at the beginning, but I try to make the best decisions for myself. I always put myself first and I try to take care of my heart. This is something I had to do for me,” he tells Billboard. “This was a chapter in my life that I’m very proud of and it gave me the base I needed to become one of the best soloists right now.” Despite launching his debut single “Mas De Ti” in October 2019, 2020 has marked a special year in Llane’s career. Not only was he a featured artist on songs by Tainy, Sebastian Yatra, Andres Cepeda and Fonseca but he also released singles such as “Amor Bailando,” “Pa’ Ti,” “Como Antes” and his Manuel Turizo-assisted “Sera.” “I need to have a lot of patience in my career because even though people know who I am from Piso 21, I’m aware that I’m new,” he says. “I...

BMG Acquires Catalog of Cheyenne Records, Including Songs by Germany’s No Angels

“The catalogue of Cheyenne Records is among the crown jewels of German pop music of the 2000s, and we are delighted to bring them back to the public,” Maximilian Kolb, BMG managing director GSA, said in a statement. “The acquisition shows BMG’s commitment to delivering the best service to artists and songwriters in the digital world.” BMG says the deal will bring back streaming availability to No Angels, which has been absent from digital streaming platforms for five years. The company notes the group had sales of more than five million, making it the biggest-selling German girl band of all time. No Angels’ 2002 debut single, “Daylight In Your Eyes,” sold more than 500,000 copies within a week after its release, according to BMG. Other hits that will now be available on digital platf...

Sheryl Crow Covers Tom Petty’s ‘You Don’t Know How It Feels’

Wildflowers remains one of Tom Petty’s best and most beloved albums. When the expanded edition of it was released last month, naturally, it received rave reviews, including from us. Since then, there was a big tribute that streamed on what would have been Petty’s 70th birthday. Last night, Sheryl Crow added her name to the list of those who have honored Petty in recent months. On Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, not one, not two, not three, but four Sheryl Crows covered Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels.” She performed the song remotely (and outdoors) and obviously with an assist from snappy editing. Check it out below. [embedded content] You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. It begins with giving...

ANGUS YOUNG Defends AC/DC’s Unchanging Sound: ‘This Is What We Do Best — We Make Rock And Roll’

In a new interview with Waleed Aly, co-host of Australia’s news and current affairs television program “The Project”, AC/DC guitarist Angus Young addressed the fact that the band never changed its style, focusing instead on fine-tuning its distinct sound over the years. “With us, it’s to be expected,” he said (see video below). As my brother [late AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young] used to say, when somebody said, ‘Every album you’ve ever made sounds the same,’ he said, ‘Yeah. It’s the same band.’ When we started, we weren’t reinventing the wheel. This is what we do best — we make rock and roll.” Angus also once again confirmed that AC/DC‘s long-awaited comeback album, “Power Up”, is a ...
