When asked if she has a tattoo inspired by Ocean, the grown-ish star had to clarify. “OK, so I have tattoos because of Frank Ocean, but they’re all inspired by different things,” she explained, before pointing out a lyric from the singer’s Chanel title track, in which he boasts, “Hide my tattoos in Shibuya.” “I heard that, I was 16, I hadn’t had tattoos yet and so when I got tattoos, I was like, ‘When I got to Shibuya, now I have something to hide,” Shahidi continued. What makes her such a big Ocean supporter? “His artistry and his work ethic, but also I’d have to say his music is so ripe with cultural references,” she replied. “Whether it be Kerry James Marshall or somebody else, it’s oftentimes an entry point to learn about...
Garvey and Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien were among a group of four artists and two industry analysts that provided evidence on the first day of the inquiry, which is anticipated to stretch for several months and will call upon executives at major labels and streaming platforms to answer questions. The Parliament probe — which so far is being done with witnesses testifying virtually, as the U.K. is in lockdown — is also addressing a lack of transparency in record contracts and opaque accounting practices, safe harbor provisions and the European Copyright Directive, which will hold online user-generated services like YouTube liable for unlicensed content. The inquiry comes at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has decimated income from touring, focusing artists’ attenti...
In a new interview with Radio.com, Meg was asked if she felt that she properly expressed her side of the story on the track. “I feel like I said enough…,” she explained. “I don’t like to go back and forth. If I said something one time, that’s what it is, that’s what I said and I meant it, there’s no need for me to continue to go back and forth.” “I am a rapper, and at the end of the day if you put something down on wax, I’mma do that too,” she continued. “So, you know, that’s what I had to do.” Lanez allegedly shot Megan twice in the foot back in July, after the two were leaving a Hollywood party together. Lanez pleaded not guilty to a felony assault charge in the incident, and appeared to address the situation on “Money Over Fallouts̶...

In spite of every curveball 2020 has thrown — one particularly tumultuous presidential election season, a disastrous pandemic of near-biblical proportions — the year has yielded some truly spectacular music. From Taylor Swift’s new indie-folk sound on her surprise album, Folklore, to the first English-language drop from the global sensation BTS, musicians continued to do what they do best: filter the universal joy and pain, and the need for connection through it all, into sublime works of sound. Perhaps that’s why, when the Recording Academy announced the nominations for the 2021 Grammys on Tuesday (November 24), the list sent fans and artists reeling. Many were quick to point out surprising, if not altogether glaring, holes in the nominations; one headline even ...
MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee spoke to Zane Lowe of Apple Music about how the rise of grunge in the early 1990s forced most hard rock bands off the radio and MTV, with album and tour sales plummeting. Asked what his thoughts were about NIRVANA and other grunge bands when they emerged, Tommy said (see video below): “I welcomed that with the biggest open arms on the planet. I was, like, ‘Yes. Somebody’s fucking stirring it up.’ Thank you. Because if I hear another fucking song that sounds like… I don’t know. There was so many bands that were sounding like — everything was just sounding the same. And I love it when someone throws a fucking grenade into the mix and goes, ‘Nope. We’re going this way.’ And dude, I love that. And then SOUNDGAR...
IRON MAIDEN guitarist Adrian Smith, who recently released a memoir, “Monsters Of River & Rock: My Life As Iron Maiden’s Compulsive Angler”, spoke to the “Saltwater Experience” podcast about his love of fishing, something that began as a youth growing up in East London and continues to this day. “The more I wrote [the book], and the more I read it back, I realized how important fishing is to me, and it’s important to have that balance [between my two passions],” Smith said (hear audio below). “Especially when you go through rough times mentally, I think fishing is so good for your head. Like I say in the book, fishing is like meditation but with a punchline. I can sit by a river or a lake, and I only think about fishing; you don̵...
Corey Taylor has once again said that STONE SOUR is “on indefinite hiatus.” The SLIPKNOT and STONE SOUR frontman, who released his debut solo album in October, discussed STONE SOUR‘s current status during an appearance on the “Talk Is Jericho” podcast. He said (hear audio below): “We’re just kind of on indefinite hiatus, let’s put it that way. I know Josh [Rand, guitar] is working on his solo thing, which is rad; he’s been wanting to do that for a while. [Bassist Johny] Chow‘s got his restaurant, and a couple of other things he’s working on. Roy [Mayorga, drums] is actually… I mean, Roy can do whatever he wants — he can fill in for anyone; he can take over from anyone. But he is actually doing a lot of scoring, which is rad....
