IMMORTAL members Harald “Demonaz” Nævdal and Reidar “Horgh” Horghagen are involved in a legal dispute over the rights to the band’s name. One of Norway’s first and most successful black metal acts, IMMORTAL was formed by Demonaz and Olve “Abbath” Eikemo in 1990. Horgh joined the group in 1996. Six years ago, Abbath and the rest of the group went through a bitter breakup. The highly publicized legal battle in 2014 over the rights to the IMMORTAL name pitted Abbath against Demonaz and Horgh, with Abbath claiming the pair abandoned IMMORTAL after they moved their gear out of the band’s rehearsal space. The Norwegian court systems determined otherwise, and awarded the IMMORTAL name to Demonaz and Horgh. According to documents uncovered by N...
Rufus Wainwright is like a reborn artist. The veteran singer and songwriter doesn’t shy away from confronting politics in his art and challenging his own talents. He’s done just that with his ninth and latest studio album, Unfollow The Rules. His latest follows a musical diversion into opera and Shakespearean sonnets, and it finds the singer in good form. “I’ve never sung better than now,” he told Billboard ahead of the new album release. “My voice is sort of at its very peak right now. That’s not unusual for someone in the opera world; It’s really in your forties when you kind of hit your stride.” {“nid”:”9365237″,”type”:”post”,”title”:”Rufus Wainwright Brings 'Robe Recitals...

In the company’s fiscal first quarter ended June 30, Sony’s music operations showed the wear and tear of the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, with revenue declining 13.1% to ¥173.735 billion yen ($1.646 billion) from 2019’s first quarter revenue of ¥200.04 billion ($1.84 billion). While operating profit was also down to ¥34.89 billion ($325.3 million), the decline on a percentage basis wasn’t as much, coming in 8.8% down from the ¥38.3 billion ($348 million) tallied in the year earlier first quarter period. Consequently, the company’s already healthy operating margin showed a slight improvement, consisting of 19.7% of revenue this year, versus 18.9% in 2019’s first quarter, which shows the company kept a tight rein on expenses. In the age of coronavirus MC Hammer’s 1990 smash “U Can’t Touch This” has a whole new meaning. The keypad at the grocery story? Can’t touch this. Your face? Can’t touch this. Door handle at the bank? Can’t touch this. Water fountain at your high school? Definitely can’t touch that. Which explains why Dr. Quentin Lee, principal of Childersberg High School in Childersberg, Alabama, recently adapted the no-touch song for a slam-dunk parody aimed at getting his students ready for the school year. Rocking a mask and armed with a bottle of hand sanitizer in one hand and a thermometer in the other, Dr. Lee runs around the halls warning pupils and teachers to stay away from high-touch surfaces while reshaping Hammer’s lyrics for a COVID-19 worl...
Over 150 independent music venues in New York City are calling for the passing of the bi-partisan Save Our Stages Act and the Restart Acts today, both of which will support indie venues during their on-going financial hardships following to the COVID shutdown. The venues — including Baby’s Alright, the Knitting Factory, the Bitter End and Bowery Ballroom — formed the New York Independent Venue Association (NYIVA) in affiliation with the National Independent Venue Association, and announced their push to pass the legislation with a “day of action” on Tuesday. The two bills can “ensure the survival of independent venues across the nation,” according to a NYIVA release. “Music venues were the first to close and we will be the last to re-open,” NYIVA ...
