Bright Eyes, Semisonic Return to Billboard Airplay Charts With New Singles

The bands make their first bows since 2007 and 2001, respectively. Two veteran acts return to Billboard airplay charts, as Semisonic and Bright Eyes both bow on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay list dated July 25. Bright Eyes, led by Conor Oberst, debuts at No. 37 with “Mariana Trench,” from the band’s album Down in the Weeds, Where the World Once Was, due Aug. 21. It’s the act’s second airplay chart entry, after Cassadaga single “Four Winds” reached No. 22 in June 2007. In between, the group released one album, The People’s Key, in 2011. That said, Oberst made a pair of Adult Alternative Songs visits between Bright Eyes entries’, both as part of groups. Monsters of Folk‘s “Say Please” hit No. 20 in November 20...

From Billboard Charts to TikTok Dances: Behind Nio Garcia’s Viral ‘La Jeepeta’

After making the rounds with “Te Bote (Remix)” next to Casper, Darell, Nicky Jam, Bad Bunny, and Ozuna — which landed at No. 36 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 2018 — Nio Garcia unleashed “La Jeepeta” in January. The chorus was born inside a jeep after the power went off at Garcia’s recording studio in Puerto Rico. In January, he dropped the first version of “La Jeepeta” — a catchy mid-tempo reggaeton — in collaboration with Brray and Juanka, released via Flow La Movie and powered by GLAD Empire. Three months later, and in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Anuel AA and Myke Towers jumped on the remix, bringing “La Jeepeta” to a whole ‘nother level. Unlike the original, which did not secure a spot on the Hot Latin Songs chart, the remix arrived in...

Bandcamp’s First Friday Fundraisers to Continue Through the Rest of the Year

Bandcamp’s First Friday fundraisers — where all sales have gone directly to the artists — will continue through the end of 2020. In a statement on the company’s website, CEO Ethan Diamond outlined the decision to keep the program going. “We started Bandcamp Fridays back in March to support artists impacted by the pandemic, and in the past few months the music community has come together in a huge way: in just four days, fans put more than $20 million directly into the pockets of artists and labels,” he said. “That’s incredible, but just as amazing is that since the pandemic hit in March, fans have bought more than $75 million worth of music and merch directly from artists and labels, and to date, fans have paid artists over half a billion(!) dollars on Bandcamp.” He added that the direct c...

Fruit Bats Ready Full-LP Cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Siamese Dream’

Fruit Bats will release a full-LP cover of Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream on August 21 via Turntable Kitchen’s SOUNDS DELICIOUS subscription series. They previewed the record with a folky version of “Today,” which finds bandleader Eric D. Johnson sweetly crooning over acoustic strums, synth pads, and brushed drums. The revamped Siamese Dream will be out as a limited-edition vinyl as part of the unique series, which asks participating artists to reinterpret one of their favorite albums. In a statement, Johnson spoke about selecting Smashing Pumpkins’ 1993 classic. “In 1993, I was the prime age to be swept up in alternative radio,” he said. “But truth be told, while I loved Nirvana and Jane’s Addiction, in my heart I was still secretly wearing a hole in my cassette copy of Steve Miller Ban...

Come Back and Love Hinds

Hinds never wanted to be a pop band. Sure, there would be occasional pop melodies they’d toy with, but full-on? Not for them. With their third studio album The Prettiest Curse, that changed. Ditching the lo-fi, chaotic, garage rock ethos strung throughout their first two records, the Madrid-based four-piece opted for something bolder, reworking their musical formula and taking a leap into a more polished arena. And with this evolution, the band, comprised of Carlotta Cosials (vocals, guitar), Ana Perrote (vocals, guitar), Ade Martin (bass) and Amber Grimbergen (drums), has strengthened their bond. Formed in 2011 as a duo called Deers featuring Cosials and Perrote, the band reemerged after a hiatus under the Hinds moniker in 2014. With the release of their surf-rock-tinged debut album Leave...

Big Boi Reminisces About Hanging With Kate Bush, Hints at Possible Collab

Big Boi and Kate Bush in the studio together? While some would not put these two on a song together, Big Boi has been a huge fan of the UK artist’s music. In a recent interview with SiriusXM Volume, the Outkast member opened up about his admiration for Bush. “I love Kate Bush. That’s my people, man,” Big Boi said in the interview. “My uncle turned me on to her since I was like in 8th grade. And this is like my mom’s brother, like the weirdo brother. He turned me on to Kate and Fleetwood Mac and Sting and Lynyrd Skynyrd, and he just listened to everything. So I grew up listening to Bob Marley too, and my top two artists of all time is 1A and 1B, Bob Marley and Kate Bush. And then No. 2 would be N.W.A.” As for his wanting to collaborate in the studio with the British singer, Big Boi sai...

Taylor Swift’s Surprise New Album Folklore Is Coming Extremely Soon

Almost 15 years ago, singer-songwriter Justin Vernon retreated to his family’s remote Wisconsin cabin and emerged with For Emma, Forever Ago, the star-making debut indie-folk LP from his Bon Iver project. In the years since, Vernon has worked with everyone from Kanye West to James Blake to Vince Staples. He can now add Taylor Swift to that list. On Thursday morning (July 23), Swift announced that a new studio album, her eighth, would drop on Friday. Called Folklore, the album consists of, as Swift tweeted, “songs I’ve poured all of my whims, dreams, fears, and musings into.” To help those plans come to life, Swift enlisted help from Vernon (“who co-wrote and was kind enough to sing on one with me,” as she wrote) as well as The National’s Aaron Dess...

Demi Lovato Is Engaged! Read Her Sweet Note To New Fiancé Max Ehrich

Demi Lovato is getting married! The singer shared on Instagram early Thursday (July 23) that her and partner Max Ehrich are now engaged, along with some adorable photos of them embracing on the beach. “When I was a little girl, my birth dad always called me his ‘little partner’ – something that might’ve sounded strange without his southern cowboy like accent,” she wrote in the caption. “To me it made perfect sense. And today that word makes perfect sense again but today I’m officially going to be someone else’s partner.” Lovato spent the rest of the caption detailing her love for Ehrich, including the gem that “I knew I loved you the moment I met you.” And speaking of gems, the third photo is a close-up of the rock she...
