One day after Naya Rivera’s body was found in Lake Piru, Calif., her cause of death has been revealed. The Ventura County Medical Examiner announced on Tuesday (July 14) that an autopsy revealed the Glee star’s cause of death as drowning and the manner was an accident. “The autopsy findings are consistent with a drowning and the condition of the body is consistent with the time that she was submerged. No traumatic injuries or disease processes were identified at autopsy. There is no indication from the investigation or examination that drugs or alcohol played a role in [Rivera’s] death, but specimens will be submitted for toxicology testing,” the press release obtained by People read. A few months ago, Win Butler subtly shared that Arcade Fire was at work on their first studio album since 2017’s Everything Now. In announcing his new solo album today (July 14), Will Butler revealed that the band was at work, but circumstances, primarily COVID-19, threw a wrench into those plans. “Arcade Fire was recording. Well, we were recording… But now our drummer is in Australia, two of us are in Canada, and the rest are in America,” Butler said in an interview with NME. “Australia are having a crazy outbreak, the border to Canada is sealed right now… like, Jesus Christ. It takes more logistics to get together. It always took a certain amount of logistics, but right now it’s insurmountable.” The problem with the sessions, at least as of now, Butler says the band won’t know ...
Bansky is at it again. The secretive English street artist, known for his provocative takes on everything from the high society art world to Paris Hilton’s debut album, has commented on the coronavirus pandemic in his latest piece — all while sneaking in a Chumbawamba reference, because of course he did. Banksy announced his new piece via a video on his Instagram page. Entitled “if you don’t mask – you don’t get”, the artwork was “installed” on a London Underground train, and consists of his own tag sprayed in that familiar shade of N95 mask blue, surrounded by stenciled rats, a common motif in his work. One of the rats uses a face mask as a parachute while another sneezes, shooting blue liquid everywhere — it represents the novel coronavirus’ dynamic aerosol efficiency, duh! The enigmatic...
The Lowdown: Last summer, at a congested intersection in Flatbush, the hip-hop rule book was left to smolder in a fiery, steel mesh garbage can. Passersby extinguished the fire, but by then Pop Smoke had already scored an improbable hit with “Welcome to the Party”. Pop Smoke (born Bashar Jackson) hardly seemed destined for superstardom; only a Noo Yawker could love those carelessly dropped “R’s” and that honking bassone cadence. And “Welcome to the Party”, with its retro drum’n’bass synth riff, could have been recorded between rounds one and two of the Bush tax cuts. It was the song that time forgot. Yet, it was streamed 80 million times. Coming to a barber shop near you is Shoot for the Stars, Aim for the Moon, Pop Smoke’s posthumous new album. (He was killed in a February home invasion; ...
Kanye West isn’t the only left-field celebrity making a third-party run for president in 2020. Brock Pierce, who is perhaps best known for starring in the Disney movie First Kid, has filed with the FEC to run as an independent candidate. Pierce played the titular role in 1996’s First Kid, starring opposite Sinbad. Pierce also portrayed a young Gordon Bombay in the first two Mighty Ducks movies, and starred in a Gushers commercial. At the age of 17, Pierce retired from acting and helped launch a video streaming service. He later started a series of internet gaming websites, at one point recruiting Steve Bannon as a venture capitalist. More recently, he got involved in cryptocurrency and rolled out his own blockchain, making a fortune in the process. However, Pierce’s career has al...
Maroon 5 bassist Mickey Madden was arrested in Los Angeles last month for domestic violence. Now, he’s taking a “leave of absence” from the pop band “for the foreseeable future.” In a statement to People, Madden explained why he was stepping down from his role. “I have some things that I need to deal with and address right now and so I have decided to take a leave of absence from Maroon 5 for the foreseeable future,” he said. “During this time, I do not want to be a distraction to my bandmates. I wish them the absolute best.” Back in June, Madden was taken into police custody and given a felony charge for “intimate partner violence.” The 41-year-old musician was released several hours later after paying his $50,000 bail. His court date is scheduled for September 29th. Editors’ Picks ...

De’Wayne is beaming as he calls from North Hollywood on a recent Tuesday. “I’m an excited-ass homie,” he tells MTV News. “I’m making music and I’m talking to you and people are actually starting to listen.” Despite 2020’s ever-darkening cloud of gloom, the 25-year-old artist has plenty to be excited about. Shortly after he finished a European tour with pop trio Waterparks earlier this year, the entire world shut down due to the coronavirus pandemic, and De’Wayne went from bouncy club shows to homebound days. But he also received some unexpected good news. Simultaneously, De’Wayne — whose alternative music veers from the “Black Skinhead”-style rumble of new single “National Anthem” to palm-muted power ...
