AMC Theatres to Reopen in July, Won’t Require Face Masks to Avoid “Political Controversy”

Update – June 19th: AMC has reversed course and will require movie-goers to wear face masks. Bankruptcy be damned: Like Cinemark and Regal Cinemas earlier this week, AMC Theatres has now announced that they, too, will begin reopening their theaters across America beginning in July. Face mask, anyone? According to The Hollywood Reporter, the world’s largest theater chain will open 450 of its US locations on July 15th followed by the remaining 150 on July 24th, all in anticipation of Disney’s Mulan and Warner Bros.’ Tenet. “After a painful almost four-month hiatus due to the coronavirus, we are delighted to announce that movies are coming back to the big screen at AMC. Our next 100 years of making smiles happen officially begin at approximately 450 theaters across the Uni...

HBO’s Perry Mason Tweaks the Past to Build a More Exciting Future: Review

The Pitch. When I heard that Perry Mason was soon to be gracing HBO, I will have to admit, I laughed. Forgive me, Perry Mason obsessives, but my chief memory of the reruns of the Perry Mason TV show of the 1950s and 1960s (to which this series bears no resemblance) from adolescence is that my father used it on Sunday nights as a sleep aid. Usually, he conked out somewhere during the opening theme. When I stayed up to watch the show, what I saw was a collage of grays, whites, and blacks, a moving gallery of future character actors and movie stars swirling around imperious and determined courtroom lawyer Mason, played by Raymond Burr. Ultimately, there wasn’t anything terribly dramatic about any of it except for Mason’s eyebrows and the occasional blast of wobbly soundtrack. And ye...

D.L. Hughley, photo via Getty Comedian D.L. Hughley says he has tested positive for COVID-19 after collapsing during a show in Nashville on Friday night. Hughley, 57, was performing at Zanies Comedy Club when he suddenly fainted. His manager and several other people carried him off the stage, and he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was treated for exhaustion and dehydration. Doctors also conducted a battery of tests and determined that he had contracted coronavirus. In a video posted to social media, Hughley said he didn’t have any symptoms related to COVID-19, and it’s unclear whether the virus contributed to him collapsing. He was released from the hospital on Saturday and will spend the next 14 days in self-isolation. Below, you can watch Hughley’s aforementione...

Watch Roger Waters Play New Version of Pink Floyd’s ‘Two Suns in the Sunset’

Roger Waters reminded us all of our possible collective demise while debuting his new studio version of Pink Floyd ballad “Two Suns in the Sunset,” the closing song from the band’s 1983 LP, The Final Cut. The songwriter tracked the tune with his touring band in a socially distanced format, each member contributing their parts remotely. The group — which would have accompanied Waters on his postponed This Is Not a Drill jaunt — features My Morning Jacket’s Bo Koster on Hammond organ, Lucius vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, drummer Joey Waronker (Atoms for Peace, Ultraísta), guitarists Jonathan Wilson and Dave Kilminster, keyboardist Jon Carin and saxophonist Ian Ritchie. The clip opens with a bleak text, reminding fans, “We’re at one hundred seconds to midnight on the doomsday c...

Dave Grohl Honors Late Dad, ‘True Renaissance Man,’ in Father’s Day Tale

Dave Grohl salutes his late dad, James Harper Grohl, in a Father’s Day installment of his ongoing Instagram essay series “Dave’s True Stories.” Throughout the lengthy piece, framed around a moving memory from 1985, the Foo Fighters frontman contrasts his own rebellious teenage persona with his father’s distinguished, conservative qualities. “Born to a blue-collar, Ohioan steelworking family in 1938, my father was a complicated man of many, sometimes-conflicting layers,” Grohl writes early in the story, which was also published at The Atlantic. “Actor, writer, award-winning journalist, lover of art and food, and a ferocious, classically trained musician. A true Renaissance man, yet so conservative that he would sometimes be mistaken in public for the legendary political commentary George Wi...

Rome in Silver and Bonnema Flip Classic Gorillaz Tune “Clint Eastwood” Into Midtempo Mayhem

It’s no easy feat to take on a Gorillaz track, which many can argue is perfect as is. However, Rome in Silver is here to prove that notion wrong with his flip of “Clint Eastwood.” To aid him on his journey, he’s enlisted the help of his roommate, fellow bass producer Bonnema. Rome is known for delivering the unexpected with his releases, consistenly keeping his fans on their toes. Will they get a drum & bass track? Or maybe a house or future bass hit?
