First Country: New Music From Rascal Flatts, Brett Young, Gabby Barrett & More

First Country is a compilation of the best new country songs, videos and albums that dropped this week. A Father’s Day edition of First Country includes a memorable video from Brett Young, who’s celebrating his first Father’s Day as a dad, as well as a welcome return from Rascal Flatts as they prepare to say goodbye. Rascal Flatts, “How They Remember You”The title track from the trio’s presumptive last effort, an EP out July 31, is a great send-off. The upbeat song, written by Marc Beeson, Josh Osborne and Allen Shamblin, features strong harmonies and a catchy melody, but is really about the message on how you choose to live your life. “Did you stand or did you fall/build a bridge or build a wall?,” Gary LeVox asks. The set also includes the band’s tribute to Kenny Rogers, “Through the Yea...

In light of the ongoing protests demanding racial justice across the nation, Leon Bridges stopped by The Late Late Show With James Corden on Thursday night (June 18) to perform his timely track “Sweeter” with Terrace Martin and Robert Glasper. “Hoping for a life more sweeter / Instead I’m just a story repeating / Why do I fear with skin dark as night? / Can’t feel peace with those judging eyes,” he sings in the emotional tune. “I’m just heartbroken,” Bridges told Corden of this tumultuous time. “I’m tired of seeing unarmed Black men dying at the hands of police, but at the same time I’m still optimistic. It’s really refreshing to see people all over the world wake up to the racism and injustice that’s embedded in America.” Of...

Ribald Siesta Key Revelations: Should Juliette Have Told Alyssa That She ‘F*cked’ Her Boyfriend?

Juliette finally let go of “the secret” — aka her hookup in Nashville — and told Alyssa what happened while everyone (except the latter lady) was on a getaway in Tennessee. But was it the “right thing” for the Queen of SK to tell the truth and call the King of Sarasota out on his “bullsh*t,” or should Alyssa have learned about the tryst from her beau? The setting for the SK season premiere shocker: a charity gala (kind of). First, angel Juliette grew increasingly frustrated seeing Alyssa all lovely-dovey with her beau at the formal event and demanded the MTV cameras cease filming. A producer pleaded with Jules to calm down, but she warned she was “close” to saying what actually happened between the former couple. Alyssa departed s...

J. Cole’s ‘Snow On Tha Bluff’ Divided Listeners — So He Weighed In

Over the past few weeks, as demonstrations in all 50 states and abroad have gone hand-in-hand with a slate of new protest music, artists like Denzel Curry, YG, and H.E.R. have released new songs that grapple with police brutality and racial injustice. On Tuesday night (June 16), J. Cole released a sparse new song called “Snow on tha Bluff.” It doesn’t take aim at the police, but shortly after its release, fans connected its words to Chicago rapper Noname, who had tweeted about “y’all favorite top selling rappers not even willing to put a tweet up” to support the demonstrations that had begun at the end of May, shortly after the killing of George Floyd. Cole seemingly addresses this message directly on “Snow on tha Bluff,” rapping, “She ...

Vincint’s Queer Eye Anthem, Chloe X Halle’s Clubby Call, And More Songs We Love

“We are owed an unpayable debt,” the New York-based artist Michael Love Michael wrote in the announcement for their latest track “JFC,” which doubled as a fiery call to arms. “We owe it only to ourselves to claim our freedom.” Though the singer’s recent releases “6 Jaguars” and “Rope,” marked by ambient vocals and plush ‘80s synths, have always filtered political topics through decadent pop production, “JFC” finds Michael plainly furious, and rightfully so. “I can’t believe all the ways that a great white lie / Wanna ruin how I live my best Black life,” they voice in a reverberating whisper that builds and bites over an icy, trap beat; in this “anthem for collective Black liberation,” Michael has found their power in protest, and the courage to say “I don’t owe you fucking anyt...
