Tiana Major9’s magic touch isn’t a roll of the dice at all. London’s latest soul riser and the recent Motown signee proves on her latest single “Lucky,” which is out tonight, that the grooviness of her previous releases wasn’t luck… She hasn’t missed yet. The enchanting track, featuring Tiana dishing out melodies catchy enough to have a classroom of preschoolers singing along, channels the best of early ’00s R&B: crispy harmonies, a flex of percussion and a voice we’re glad made its way to the U.S. It will be on her forthcoming EP. “’Lucky’ is a song about feeling ‘lucky in love,’” Tiana says. “Things are very heavy right now for Black people everywhere — we’re grieving and experiencing trauma simultaneously. Although it was written before the double pandemic (COVID-19 and Lynchi...
Dave Grohl, Neil Young, Billie Eilish, Lady Gaga led a group of artists urging Congress to send aid and to answer the National Independent Venue Association’s request for government assistance. Overall, over 600 musicians and comedians signed the letter. These venues asking for support have been hit especially hard by the coronavirus pandemic. “Independent venues give artists their start, often as the first stage most of us have played on. These venues were the first to close and will be the last to reopen,” the letter began. “These venues were the first to close and will be the last to reopen. With zero revenue and the overwhelming overhead of rent, mortgage, utilities, taxes and insurance, 90% of independent venues report that if the shutdown lasts six months and there’s no federal ...
We’re a little over a week away from Haim’s Women in Music Pt. III is finally released. As what’s likely to be a final teaser, the sisters shared a version of “Gasoline” from it, which was performed at home. “miss playing for you guys. here’s a new song ‘gasoline’,” the caption for the clip read. The song is the fifth track on Women in Music Pt. III. It follows the sisters’ performance on NPR’s Tiny Desk series earlier in the week. Recently, Haim performed on the Late Late Show With James Corden. So far, they’ve released “Don’t Wanna,” “I Know Alone” “Summer Girl,” “Hallelujah” and “The Steps” from the album. Before the pandemic canceled everything, Haim was on a promo tour that took place at delis in select cities. Check it ...
Remember just a few months ago when Kid Rock’s Big Ass Honky-Tonk and Rock & Roll Steakhouse defied the city of Nashville over closing its space due to COVID-19? Then remember when it eventually gave in? That seems like eons ago. In the past week as Nashville has gradually reopened, a photo circulated where Big Ass Honky-Tonk and Rock & Roll Steakhouse was filled to capacity with patrons. As you can see below, there wasn’t much social distancing nor folks wearing masks. Even more problematic (at least in this case), bars in Davidson County can’t sit at bars or be served. View this post on Instagram This was last night at Kid Rock’s bar in Nashville. Our cases in TN are skyrocketing. All of our local, independent venues have been closed for three months, and there’s no sig...

The Lyric Opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera have canceled the fall portions of their 2020-21 seasons due to the new coronavirus. The Lyric Opera eliminated four of its 10 productions and delayed opening night from Sept. 17 to Jan. 16. San Francisco canceled five of seven stagings and delayed opening night from Sept. 11 to April 25. Twenty-six performances were canceled in Chicago and 37 in San Francisco. Lyric general director Anthony Freud said Tuesday he hopes to reschedule the missed stagings for future seasons: a double bill of Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci;” what was to have been the North American premiere of George Benjamin’s “Lessons in Love and Violence;” Puccini’s “Tosca;” and Verdi’s “Attila.” The season now is set to start with the Chicag...

J. Cole is back with new music. The Fayetteville-native releases “Snow on Tha Bluff,” his first new song of the year as a lead artist. Produced with Wu10, “Snow on Tha Bluff” is Cole’s first solo effort since 2018’s KOD album, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200, one of five chart leaders to his name. “Bluff” is lyrical dynamite. Cole flows on social injustice, hardship and life in the ghettos, his words pouring over a dreamy production. On it, he raps: “Feel like a slave that somehow done saved enough coins to buy his way up outta slavery/ Thinking just maybe, in my pursuit to make life so much better for me and my babies.” Cole has kept busy of late. He assisted Gang Starr on 2019’s “Family and Loyalty” and contributed to the all-star set Revenge of the Dreamers III, which de...
Two of Ibiza’s hottest clubs are continuing to mitigate risk from COVID-19 by remaining shut down even as the broader nation of Spain moves forward with reopening. A joint announcement from Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa revealed that the venues intend to stay closed through at least the month of July. Spain recently entered its third phase of reopening, which granted some nightlife venues permission to open at limited capacity. At the same time, President Francina Armengol of the Balearic Islands issued a decree preventing bars and clubs within her jurisdiction from reopening, which includes those in Ibiza. That decree guaranteed the island’s popular club circuit would remain closed until late June at the earliest. It appears now, however, that at lea...
