Lollapalooza 2020 Officially Postponed Due to COVID-19 Concerns

Beloved Chicago music festival Lollapalooza has officially been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. The global pandemic has wreaked havoc on the live music industry, as Lolla is the latest in a laundry list of major festival brands that were forced to reschedule their flagship events. Organizers shared an official statement via the Lollapalooza website and took to social media to share the solemn news. “We wish we could bring Lollapalooza to Grant Park again this year, but we understand why things can’t move forward as planned,” organizers wrote. “The health and safety of our fans, artists, partners, staff and community is always our highest priority.” You can read the statement in full below. Lollapalooza fans, however, can find solace in the fact that the fest said it is hostin...

Watch Dirt Monkey Perform for a Packed Crowd at Orlando Nightclub Amid Pandemic

As many cities across the world slowly roll out plans to rebuild and kickstart their respective economies, the nightlife industry has not been a priority. Since nightclubs and festivals inherently lock horns with pandemic-related safety ordinances due to the difficulties of enforcing social distancing measures in congested venues, the reopening of nightlife has taken a backseat to other industries. Enter dubstep artist Dirt Monkey, who appeared at Orlando’s GILT Nightclub yesterday, June 8th, 2020 to throw down a heavy-hitting bass music set before a packed crowd. While we’re still in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to note that while concerts of this nature are frowned upon by some, they are certainly not illegal. The stat...

Gesaffelstein Announces Special Livestream of Riveting Los Angeles “REQUIEM” Show from 2019

Last year, Gesaffelstein embarked on his North American Requiem Tour, which hit a select number of cities, including Los Angeles. On November 8th, the gifted electronic artist touched down in LA for a riveting performance at popular concert venue Shrine Expo Hall, which was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1975. The show was brimming with the authentic sonic flair and dark mystique of Gesaffelstein, who remains one of the most prolific producers in electronic music despite his enigmatic presence. His signature branding, which is highlighted by a monolith covered entirely in Vantablack, exudes a nostalgic yet metaphysical film noir feel that is emblematic of a truly unique live music experience. In true Gesaffelstein fashion, the French record ...

Petition Launched to Replace Statue of Robert E. Lee with GWAR’s Oderus Urungus in Richmond, Virginia

Amid the protests taking place in the wake of George Floyd’s death while in police custody, some long-standing statues are not fairing very well. Now, a new petition calls for a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, to be replaced with one of late GWAR leader Oderus Urungus. In recent days, statues of Christopher Columbus have been toppled and beheaded in Richmond and Boston, respectively, with protesters citing the explorer’s involvement in the genocide of Native Americans. In England, a statue of known slave-trader Edward Colston was destroyed and thrown into a river, and in Belgium, a statue of King Leopold II was removed because of his oppressive rule over the Congo. As Metal Injection reports, onetime GWAR dancer / backup vocalist Slymenstra Hymen (aka Dan...

Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods Brutally Confirms We Haven’t Learned Enough From War: Review

The Pitch: Five bloods, four surviving soldiers, the fall of Saigon, a hunt for gold, and the ever-lasting damage and degradation of war. Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods is his take on Vietnam through the eyes of African American grunts, both past and present. Vietnam, 1971. Paul (Delroy Lindo), Eddie (Norm Lewis), Otis (Clark Peters), Melvin (Isaiah Whitlock Jr.), and Norman (Chadwick Boseman) are a battalion that finds a crate filled with Vietnamese gold. Knowing they can’t just grab it and go, the men bury the prize with the hope of coming back for it when the time is right. In the meantime, they’re fighting in a war they’re not sure they need to be a part of, questioning the dangers of this foreign land against the rioting, fires, and protests at home. Ho Chi Minh City. Today. Paul, Eddie, Oti...

Shamir Basks in Independence on New Song “On My Own”: Stream

Earlier this year, Shamir dropped a mini-album called Cataclysm. Now, he’s back with a poppy new song called “On My Own”. The track is the lead single from an upcoming album that will supposedly be his most accessible since his 2015 debut, Ratchet. After emerging as a glitzy disco and dance-pop artist on XL Recordings, Shamir became disillusioned with mainstream stardom and retreated to making lo-fi, insular indie rock for many years. “On My Own” isn’t a return to the glossy club music of Ratchet, but it is the most outwardly catchy and upbeat song he’s released in a long time. Over peppy drums, a sprightly bassline, and guitar riffs that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Cherry Glazerr LP, the Philly-based songwriter sings defiantly about regaining independence after a breakup. Conven...

Russell Simmons Accuser Criticizes ‘Breakfast Club’ for Giving Him a Platform

Following the debut of HBO Max’s sexual assault documentary On the Record — which features accounts from multiple women accusing Russell Simmons of rape — the hip-hop mogul was invited onto The Breakfast Club, where he once again denied the allegations against him. “Back then, I thought it was a game…. There were no Black actresses that I didn’t date and they’re my friends today,” Simmons said on the long-running radio show. “They don’t have the experience of me being a monster the movie makes me out to be.” He later added, “I can never say that someone doesn’t feel victimized. I can tell you that I don’t feel that I victimized them.” Not long after the interview was posted online, Sil Lai Abrams — one of Russell’s accusers featured in ...

Lars Ulrich Surprises Superfan Pediatric Nurse, Reveals New Album on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’: Watch

Lars Ulrich is a man of many talents: drummer, former tennis ace, painter, metal legend. On Wednesday (June 10), the Metallica co-founder put it all aside for a few minutes to pay tribute to another type of hero when he Zoomed in to Jimmy Kimmel Live. The double-kick wizard was the latest celebrity to play a round of #HealthCareHero, this time surprising Tracey Bednar, a pediatric ICU nurse and Metallica superfan from Long Island. Bednar works with children battling COVID-19. Each day she drives 45 minutes to work, clocks in at 7 am and “hits the ground running.” A proper rock star. She loves golf, yoga and playing music loud in the car. Especially Metallica. And in particular, “Enter Sandman.” Enter Ulrich. After the shock and awe of the moment, the Danish-born rocker thanked Bednar for h...

The Flaming Lips Perform Bubble-Wrapped Version of ‘Race For The Prize’ on ‘Colbert’: Watch

If you’ve lived with The Flaming Lips, you’ll know they live in a bubble. A psychedelic bubble, never quite touching the ground. On Wednesday night (June 10), Wayne Coyne and Co. were up to their magical tricks when they Zoomed in to Stephen Colbert’s Late Show for a performance of “Race For The Prize,” originally a single lifted from their 1999 album The Soft Bulletin. This being a global pandemic where social distancing is paramount, Coyne, his bandmates and the audience got to work inside giant inflatable bubbles, a staple from the group’s live shows. Classy move, and very Flaming Lips. Bubble-wrapped concerts probably aren’t the future. But on the Flaming Lips’ planet, that’s how socially distant gigs are done. The veteran psychedelic-rock outfit recently contributed to the debut Deap ...
