Alicia Keys asked her 30 million Twitter followers one question: “Do you know what happened to Breonna Taylor?” In a nearly three-minute video posted today (June 10), Keys led a crucial call-to-action video that featured Tamika Palmer, who recalled the brutal murder of her child. Taylor, a Kentucky-based EMT, was fatally shot eight times in her home on March 13 after three Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) officers broke in using a “no-knock” warrant. “They fired 22 times, eight of those bullets landed in the body of the most essential worker I will ever know,” Palmer said about her late daughter. “Now the whole city is mad, now the whole world is mad. Breonna should not be dead. Some days, I feel like I can’t breathe without her...
HIP-HOP 6/10/2020 In efforts to push his lauded album Time Served, MoneyBagg Yo ventures to the golf course for his “Cold Shoulder” video. Not only does the Memphis powerhouse practice his swing, but he also manages to squeeze in family time with his children. “Barely say no to my kids, been like that since I birthed ’em / DeMoney a spittin’ image of me, his mama say I cursed him,” he raps on the candid track. Last month, MoneyBagg hurled out the deluxe album for Time Served, which included seven new tracks. Features include Lil Baby, Rylo Rodriguez, Big Homiee G, and Big 30. In January, Time Served debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, marking a career-high for MoneyBagg. So far, he notched two Gold records from the proj...
Get ready, Blinks! Blackpink is coming back to your area soon as the K-pop girl group announced its comeback single will drop June 26, according to YG Entertainment. The untitled single ends Blackpink’s one-year musical hiatus since the Kill This Love EP, which reached the No. 42 spot on the Billboard 200 in April 2019. The song also serves as the lead single for the quartet’s first-ever full studio album due in September. Sounds like everything’s going according to the release plan YG Entertainment publicized to fans last month that stated the pre-release title track will come out in June. Blinks can then expect a second new song from members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa either in July or August. To hold fans over until then, the women delivered ...
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department might see money from Drakeo the Ruler’s latest album before he does. Thank You for Using GTL was recorded over the phone from the county’s Men’s Central Jail using phone service from GTL (formerly Global Tel*Link), a company that controls about half of the market for telecom services in correctional facilities. Their exorbitant rates, which extort families’ access to inmates, have been under fire from politicians and advocacy groups alike, but persist largely because they cut sheriffs in on the scam. The company has guaranteed the L.A. County Sheriff millions of dollars each year in fees, providing plenty of incentive to keep the predatory systems in place. This context is important because GTL is more than just a symptom of a corrupt capitalist ...
RATING: 8/10 Hats off, as they say, to MAGNUS KARLSSON. The Swede already has plenty on his plate, what with being lead guitarist for PRIMAL FEAR and routinely charged with putting together projects for FRONTIERS MUSIC, the recent ALLEN/OLZON album included. In fact, it’s impressive that Karlsson has found the time to revisit his FREE FALL project, which has produced two previous albums, 2013’s self-titled debut and 2015’s “Kingdom Of Rock”. You may applaud the metal gods for allowing him to complete a third installment, because “We Are The Night” is easily the finest of the three and arguably the most straightforwardly thrilling thing Karlsson has ever put his name to. As with its predecessors, this was performed almost entirely by its titular cre...

RATING: 8/10 Seemingly out of nowhere, PARALYDIUM have conjured one of the melodic metal albums of the year. Armed with the same rhythm section as fellow Swedes’ DYNAZTY, who have already dropped an absolute melodic-ripper this year, this band operate on similar territory, but “Worlds Beyond” is a deceptively unconventional beast. Herein, overwrought balladry, ultra-uplifting power metal and dark, brooding tech-prog wizardry all get a fair share of attention, but the resultant blend is far more absorbing than the potential sum of its parts might infer. Opening track “Within The Sphere” is a brilliantly bombastic entry point, but it’s one of this record’s more straightforward moments: a palate-cleanser, you might say, in preparation for more extrava...

GWAR have been their usual unusual selves during quarantine. They’ve appeared on CNN giving an update to pandemic life, encouraged fans to drink bleach (as a joke of course) and popped up in a Frank Iero video. That said, as statues of Confederate leaders and other historically problematic figures are being torn down and replaced worldwide, GWAR fans have a request. A new petition is circulating the web, calling for a statue of GWAR’s late leader Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) to replace a preexisting statue of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, which is also the band’s hometown. While the notion of taking down statues shouldn’t come as a surprise after one of slave-trader Edward Colston was tossed into a river in England and a Christopher Columbus s...
OutKast fans are rejoicing at the return of Andre 3000. And while 3 Stacks hasn’t hopped on a new track in a bit, the legendary lyricist instead resurfaced to use his platform to raise money for the Movement for Black Lives, an organization committed to ending police brutality and racial injustice. And he’s doing it with some new merch: 13 variations of a long-sleeve T-shirt to be exact. “Something very important is happening all over the world and it is happening to all of us,” Andre wrote on his site. “How does it make you feel?” “For three days, a selection of shirts inspired by a collection of my jumpsuits will be sold and 100% of net proceeds will be donated to Movement for Black Lives to aid in their fight to end police brutality and racial injustice against Black people. T...
On Tuesday, a Twitter user who has since deleted their account said that Rage Against The Machine — a band whose name should speak for itself — and Tom Morello were “ruining” their fan base by sharing “political BS.” “I used to be a fan until your political opinions came out,” the fan wrote. “Music is my sanctuary and the last thing I want to hear is political BS when I’m listening to music. As far as I’m concerned, you and Pink are completely done. Keep running your mouth and ruining your fan base.” Well, Morello responded. And that’s when Twitter did its thing. “Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T contain ‘political BS,’” Morello said. “I need to know so I can delete it from the catalog.” Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T c...
The Grammys’ Best Urban Contemporary Album category will now be called Best Progressive R&B Album, the Recording Academy announced on Wednesday morning (June 10). “There were some uncomfortable feelings around [the term urban],” Harvey Mason, Jr., chair & interim president/CEO of the Recording Academy, told Billboard. “I think it’s been a gradual shift within in the R&B community. It’s been discussed [within the Academy]. It’s been a little contentious at times.” Republic Records announced last week that the “urban” will no longer be used. But Mason pointed out to Billboard that the deadline for awards and nomination proposals was due back in March. So removing “urban” from the category was already happening before the record label’s announcement. Aside from the category change...
