In addition to writing new music, artists have been spending plenty of their quarantine time covering songs they hold dear. We’ve seen James Blake take on Joni Mitchell, Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo put his spin on Nirvana, and Incubus’ Brandon Boyd take a crack at Beach House. Switchfoot, the alt-rock outfit best known for that one 2004 Christian chart-topper, are also following suit with a new covers EP, though it features some very unexpected selections. Simply titled Covers, the upcoming effort sees Switchfoot branching out beyond their religious rock to reimagine originals by Frank Ocean (“Swim Good”), Vampire Weekend (“Harmony Hall”), and Harry Styles (“Lights Up”). There are also renditions of “Lucky Man” by The Verve and “Sick Boy” by The Chainsmokers. In a statement about the EP’s v...
Two years ago, No Rome scored a hit with “Narcissist”, a single featuring The 1975. The London-based songwriter and producer is now releasing another guest-heavy track in “Hurry Home”, which boasts assists from fellow Filipino artists beabadoobee and Jay Som. On the new collaboration, the three young talents take turns airing out their frustrations over a relationship that’s barely hanging on by a thread. “You’ve been running around my mind for a couple of weeks/ Guess that’s why it’s hard for me to fall asleep,” beabadoobee opens, while Jay Som’s later verse sees her finding “it hard to know that/ I can’t replace you yet.” An aching No Rome handles the chorus, determinedly singing, “I want to see you but it’s gonna hurt/ We got some problems but we’ll make it work.” Musically, “Hurry Home...
Kieran Hebden, the electronic artist best known as Four Tet, has surprise released a new EP. However, there’s a twist. The four-track record was released under the secret name ⣎⡇ꉺლ༽இ•̛)ྀ◞ ༎ຶ ༽ৣৢ؞ৢ؞ؖ ꉺლ, notes Stereogum, which he rarely uses. The title of the new EP is impossible to read or even spell for that matter — that is, unless you speak wingdings like an alien. All four songs on the release have similarly indecipherable names. Unsurprisingly, fans have already leaned into the absurdity of these titles, with one listener writing, “Ah yeah, another four tracks that neither your computer nor you can read, brilliant, mate.” Hebden has always been pretty flippant when naming his songs, though, which is precisely the point — they don’t matter much, if at all, in comparison to the music it...
Start howling, folks: Ryan Gosling is about to get a whole lot hairier. According to Variety, the Hollywood hunk has signed on to play the Wolfman in what will be the next Universal Monsters reboot to come from Universal. Details are scarce as of press time, but sources tell the publication that Universal has been meeting with directors over the past month. Nothing’s confirmed at the moment, but Bad Education director Cory Finley is said to be in the mix. Orange is the New Black writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo penned the screenplay that’s based on an idea by Gosling. In fact, sources are touting Nightcrawler as an influence, which is interesting. It goes without saying that the film follows this year’s incredibly successful reimagining of The Invisible Man, which direct...
It’s not every day you get to work with a friend you’ve known for over 25 years, but that’s the case for Claude VonStroke and Marc Houle, who have released their first collaboration, titled “Fly Guy.” With VonStroke growing up in Detroit and Houle just across the river in Windsor, their friendship blossomed with a shared love for music. They used to trade software and sample CDs together, unknowingly building the foundation for two prolific careers in house and techno, respectfully. You can hear the chemistry at work on “Fly Guy,” smoothly melding the two artists’ stylings effortlessly. Houle had sent over an old file to his longtime friend, but they soon realized it needed to be brought up to 2020 standards. While the track stays true ...

Today we get to hear something we very rarely get to experience—a musical collaboration between mother and child. Moore Kismet, the 15-year-old electronic prodigy, is back with the help of their mother, Momma Kismet, to deliver an impressive trap single titled “Flair” via Never Say Die. Having a mother who is a semi-professional singer has its perks, even if they don’t lend their voice to the track, like in the case of “Flair.” Instead, Momma Kismet shared her expertise by helping to craft the melody. The result is a bright, glitch-fueled piece of art that evokes the early work of AraabMuzik. Plus, the Skype loading sound clip is such a simple but effective way to convey emotion, especially when the piece is tied to their mother. “Wr...
By day, David Solomon pulls the strings of Goldman Sachs, one of the nation’s largest and most powerful investment banking enterprises. By night, he DJs and produces electronic music as DJ D-Sol, epitomizing a fascinating dichotomy between the worlds of business and music. DJ D-Sol, who also owns and operates his own Payback Records imprint, released his single “Electric” back in February of this year, teaming up with Hayley May for a melodic deep house number. “Electric” has now received a remix package that can only be described by its own name, featuring three bouncy house reworks from Danny Quest, FANGS, and NYC duo Crush Club, which you can check out below. Payback Records teamed up with Atlantic‘s dance music arm, ...
