In the past few days, I’ve had the strong urge to pack away all of my summer clothes and jump head first into autumn. The weather feels like it’s turning, and with the beginning of September comes that “back to school” desire for tights, knits, boots and great outerwear. Although we’re still a few weeks away from the main four fashion capitals providing us with street style fodder, Stockholm’s runway shows are on right now, and the Scandi set are out in full force. As always, their quirky take on trends is a welcome addition to our saved folders. The editors, stylists, influencers and buyers in this chic city are aware of what’s new and now, but they’ll always adopt trends with a unique, less slavish twist, leaning into oversized s...
“Subversive basics” is a term I recently stumbled upon, and my interest was immediately piqued. I love wardrobe classics but always enjoy making them feel more exciting, and subversive basics do just that—with a few caveats. The term, according to Refinery29, was coined by TikToker and trend hunter Agus Panzoni, who describes them as “basics that rebel up to the point of losing their utility.” Think cut-outs, sheer and keyhole features on white vest tops, black roll-necks, and classic cardigans. But I think they can go further than that. Oversized and non-fitted pieces and interesting denim silhouettes can also be considered as more “subversive.” And I’d go so far as to say that these pieces are still very useful. How...

I don’t know about you, but I spent last night watching the first episode of the new Gossip Girl reboot. Now, we have yet another revival to look forward to because the new Sex and the City show officially began filming in New York City. That’s right: Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are back in action and wearing some very on-brand outfits for each of their characters. (Sadly, Samantha will not be part of the new spin-off, and her sassy ensembles and witty one-liners will be sorely missed.) Big has just made his first appearance, and it’s intriguing to see what Carrie wears alongside him, a feathered headpiece reminiscent of her wedding day? Hmm. Thanks to paparazzi images, we have the very first look at what the ladies are wearing in the show, which will be calle...

With summer coming to an end and in-person events picking back up again (we can’t believe the Met Gala is only two weeks away!), London saw its first fête in the form of British GQ’s Men of the Year Awards held at the Tate Modern. Hosted by Sabrina and Idris Elba, the awards ceremony aim to celebrate people who made the world a better place over the past 12 months. It should come as no surprise that Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford and actor John Boyega are both on the list — the former for his free school meals campaign for children over the summer holidays, the latter for using his voice and his profile during the Black Lives Matter protests last summer. I May Destroy You writer and actor Michaela Coel is also nominated, as is Paul Mescal for his role in Normal Pe...

The 78th Venice Film Festival began on Wednesday with a decadent red carpet that we are hoping marks a grand reopening of the global film industry. Hosted at the Lido Di Venezia (Venice Lido) between Wednesday, 1 Sept., and Saturday, 11 Sept., the annual event opens with a star-studded red carpet before scheduled screenings and premieres — with arrivals for Spencer, Dune, The Lost Daughter, Last Night in Soho, and House of Gucci being very highly anticipated. Unquestionably, Kristen Stewart‘s Diana-inspired gown will be the most talked-about dress of the opening ceremony — but with some stiff competition. Zendaya and Anya Taylor-Joy share the same superstar stylist, Law Roach, who ensures that his clients’ red carpet looks are dramatic, sophisticated, and timeless. While the wo...
Choosing a good moisturiser can be tricky at the best of times. With so many trending ingredients and varying price points to navigate, it can be overwhelming to know where to start—and that’s coming from someone who lives and breathes beauty products. Throw an oily complexion and spot-prone skin into the mix and things get even more complicated. After all, the last thing you want to think about when dealing with excessive levels of shine on your skin is applying another layer of moisture. However, despite regularly skipping moisturiser during my teenage years—when my acne was at its peak—I never found that it benefitted my skin. In actual fact, almost every skin expert that I’ve ever spoken to as always advised me to continue using moisturiser to ...
When daily commutes to the office were more of a regular thing, the best part of my morning routine was easily putting on my makeup. Beyond the transformational aspect, for me, applying it is also downright therapeutic. But, as working from home became the new norm, my makeup collection understandably started to collect dust. Until very recently, it’s been almost a year since I picked up a blending brush and thoroughly dove into my eye shadow palettes. I used to relish experimenting with different colours and glittery textures, but admittedly my skills have become a little rusty. To ease into the full swing of vibrant eye shadow looks I decided to turn to something a little more beginner-friendly. Colourful eyeliner has all of the fun of ...
If there’s one thing I’m asked most frequently as a shopping editor it’s what designer bags are worth the investment. It’s a pretty big question to answer as so many things come into play, after all, one person’s idea of what is ‘affordable’ and ‘expensive’ will vary massively according to their budget. There’s also the practicality consideration—some of us would happily forgo a roomy interior for an attractive design, whereas others require their handbags to fit everything except the kitchen sink. I’m probably somewhere in the middle. I find it hard to get on board with the micro bag trend and I require my bags to be versatile, however I am the sort of person you’ll see lugging around a canvas...
The future of fashion is the community closet, i.e. multi-brand clothing rental websites and apps at every price point. It’s no secret that the fashion and textiles industry is a major player in our global waste problem, alongside the dangers of oil and agriculture. We still have quite a way to go if we want to close the loop on circular fashion, but the growing fashion rental economy is helping to push our consumption in a more sustainable direction. In the past few years, the fashion rental economy has grown at an exceptional rate. American company Rent the Runway was one of the first big names in the rental business, and it’s still going strong a whole decade layer. Since then, the UK has quickly followed suit with dozens of fashion rental websites and apps, specilising in e...
