One of our most-loved stories on Who What Wear covers the high-street items we have seen influencers wearing on Instagram recently, which we update and share every month. We also love to celebrate independent brands, vintage finds, luxury labels and contemporary brands, and so here every month, we will talk about some of the best items we’ve seen on the internet. It might be a £50 top by a little-known label or a £1000 Loewe bag—as long as it’s an item we believe is truly special. This month, items that have made us gasp while we scroll include a beige short-sleeved shirt by Matteau, a beautiful gingham dress by sustainable London-based brand Franks and an ochre midi dress with a cut-out at the waist by Aje. Keep scrolling to see the 15 special pieces w...
There has been a shift within the fashion industry of late. Thanks to 2019’s spotlight on the climate crisis, consumers are more aware of the fact that it is one of the most polluting industries in the world and one that contributes significantly to global warming. However, people’s shopping habits aren’t going to be curbed overnight. So then how can we make sure our wardrobes are more sustainable if we’re not buying second hand and can’t face not shopping at all? The answer lies in one small change: investing in organic cotton. I spoke to three sustainable fashion experts about this material and how it can create various environmental and health benefits: Alicia Taylor, who runs sustainable shopping site Gather & See, Ben Matthews, who is the CEO of sustainable clothing brand Ninety P...
Long before Arket and & Other Stories started serving up elevated, design-savvy staples to their adoring fans, Whistles was there, peddling away its wares in a mid-market space that, for a long time, remained relatively unoccupied. It’s a brand that acknowledged there was a demand for higher-quality pieces that were more accessible than designer buys but also a step above the super-low-priced high-street brands. Forty-five years after it first opened its doors, Whistles remains a mainstay on the great British high street. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. There was a brief, blissful time during the early ’00s when a handful of Sephora stores popped up around the UK. Although I didn’t have any awareness of what a big deal this was at the time, I have vivid memories of my 13-year-old self and my best friends taking a monthly pilgrimage to Brent Cross (the journey involved two buses from our homes in the London suburbs and a dash on foot across the North Circular) to spend hours swatching lipsticks and spritzing perfumes there. To us, Sephora was the height of cool, and although we couldn’t afford a thing, there was something about that shop that made beauty products seem like the most exciting things in the world. Boots, on the other hand, did not. With one on pretty much every high street and in every shopping centre in the...
When it comes to being a petite woman, there are a few things I have learnt to accept. For example, I know I’ll never be able to reach the top shelf of the kitchen cabinets or have a perfect unobstructed view at a music concert. And in pre-pandemic times, I knew that getting on the tube in peak hour would often result in being squished in between other people’s shoulders (or worse, armpits). While I am perfectly content with my smaller stature and the compromises that it forces upon me, there is one thing I am not willing to settle on, and that is ill-fitting clothing. I stand at just 5’1″, and finding clothes for my size can often be a challenge. And although I’m happy to style an oversize blazer or slouchy knit from t...
What is your USP? Because we work only directly with brands (no peer-to-peer element), we’re able to make renting with us as easy as online shopping, with next-day deliveries, multiple sizes and in-house cleaning and quality control. With Rotaro, you know your rental will always be as good as new. In a world full of stuff, we believe by offering a highly curated selection of iconic pieces, we can help you cut through the noise. The trend forecasters in our team are great at championing emerging designers and identifying new trends, and we stock cult items that are often sold out elsewhere. Our brand partners include JW Anderson, Rotate Birger Christensen, Stine Goya, Materiel Tbilisi, Anouki and more. Because we handle the entire rental process ourselves, we are able to ensure ...
I turned 36 in December, and while I have curated my wardrobe staples over the years, I think I’ve finally settled on a capsule of the below 27 items. Now, well into my 30s, I think it’s safe to say I’m happy with these pieces and I would never switch any of them out for anything else. Yes, newer additions come and go, but these are the ones I wear regularly. I’ve not included items like skirts or wedding guest dresses because as I’ve mentioned, this is about getting dressed daily, rather than for those special events. This list isn’t about items that are nice to have. This list isn’t about trends, either. This list is all about pieces that will last in your wardrobe, and whenever you wear them, they will ma...
Truly sustainable fashion starts with our own two hands. Buying fewer clothes, finding secondhand pieces, or investing in eco-conscious garments is a great start, but learning a few basic hand-sewing techniques is the easiest way to reduce the amount of clothes going to landfill. If you’re anything like us, then maybe you never learned how to sew. Instead of figuring out how to sew a loose button, fix a snagged thread on a jumper, or patch a pair of socks, we often end up buying something new because it seems easier. Our relationship with fast fashion is kind of bizarre when you really think about it. If we compare fashion and clothing to food and cooking, then your perspective really begins to shift. Whether you have a super-busy lifestyle and food deliveries help to make your days ...
How do you recycle your beauty empties? For those who have attempted to discard used mascara tubes, plastic applicators and old eyeshadow palettes, you’ll know there’s no simple answer. Most beauty packaging ends up on the rubbish tip, and back in 2018, a report by Zero Waste Week found that the beauty industry produces a shocking 142 billion pieces of packaging each year. As beauty lovers continually become more conscious about the environment, it was only a matter of time before brands started to take notice and, most importantly, improve their sustainable options. Refillable beauty products—with packaging that can be used more than once—has become one answer to the beauty industry’s waste issue. It’s certainly not going to solve all problems overnight, but is a small step tha...
It will come as no surprise to learn that I’ve always loved beauty products. As soon as I hit secondary school I’d spend my pocket money on magazines—Bliss, J-17, CosmoGirl, I’d buy them all—because I was totally obsessed with the beauty pages inside, especially the skincare tips. You see, when you’re dealing with acne as a teenager you become somewhat preoccupied with your complexion, and I was a teen on an acne-busting mission. Of course, being the early noughties, there wasn’t the plethora of online information that there is now so I relied on magazines to educate me on which products would rid my skin of spots—and that meant a heck of a lot of Clearasil. Despite a lot of promising marketing jargon, nothing really worked. As a teena...
Marks and Spencers can often be overlooked in fashion circles, however in my opinion you just can’t beat it when you’re looking for classic, quality pieces that will last in your wardrobe and don’t cost a fortune. There are certain areas that M&S really excels at—Percy Pigs, cashmere jumpers, bras and knickers and shoes. You might not think that the high street giant would be known for its shoe department, but its flats and sandals always manage to be comfortable and stylish. This isn’t where I’d turn for a statement shoe or a party heel, but it has an amazing collection of summer sandals and loafers. These are shoes to see you through long weekend plans and multiple laps of the park. They have all the classics covered, such as elegant leath...
Image Source: Titi Finlay I’ve always felt intimidated by the sneaker industry, despite having worked for two major sneaker brands in my life. As a humble shoe size four, there are immediately limits to what sneakers I can and can’t wear, and I’m not alone in that exclusion. The industry has predominantly favoured the needs of men over women, and it’s a problem that has existed for a long time. “The reasons for the sneaker industry not being inclusive stems right back to women’s sporting history,” Angelee Kholia, the founder of Sheaker Magazine, told POPSUGAR. “Sneakers were primarily made for sport, and of course, it was frowned upon for women to participate in sports, unlike for men. So the sneaker industry has always favoured men’s n...
