There’s nothing quite like the inexplicable satisfaction of a really good outfit. Sometimes it can be hard to put your finger on what it is exactly that makes something work: It could be a clever colour combination, an unexpected silhouette, or even a subtle trim on a pair of trousers. As a fashion editor, it is my job to keep an eye out for these winning ensembles. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it. We even have a channel on Slack that is literally dedicated to great outfits, and boy, are there plenty to choose from. This story is essentially a line-up of all the fabulous outfits that have been given the Slack-channel seal of approval. I find that the looks that stand out to me are often relatively simple in composition ...
There’s plenty of conflicting advice about how much SPF to apply, but it’s widely accepted that most of us just don’t slather on enough of it. Official National Health Service guidelines advise using two teaspoons of sunscreen for your head, arms and neck, or two tablespoons for your entire body. But in case you don’t want to treat your sun protection like you’re baking a cake, Colbert says you can use SPF “just like a moisturiser—enough to lightly cover the skin.” When it comes to applying SPF, you should do so about 30 minutes before you head outside. I apply it as the last step in my skincare routine before doing my hair and makeup. However, if it’s a summer’s day, you’re advised to reapply it just before you leave the hou...
For as long as I can remember, Sephora has been my happy place. But I haven’t always known what to do in there, to be honest. In my 20s, I was far more concerned with makeup than anything else and usually just bought basic skincare necessities at the drugstore. Obviously, in your 20s, time is on your side, and you don’t need to worry much about anti-aging and the like, but it’s the decade of prevention when it comes to your skin, and I wish I’d done a little more to not squander that time. Luckily, I was really good about doing the most important thing you can for your skin in your 20s: I wore sunscreen on my face, neck, and chest every day. (This one is my longtime favorite.) It’s so crucial. But I’ve realized, now that I’m in my mi...
I know it’s the outright cheesiest thing to say, but I really have always had a deep love for fashion since a very young age. Despite my humble reputation at school as “the quiet girl,” I finally figured out how to grow into my own identity and I did that via my clothing. I started wearing handmade flower crowns (I was in my wannabe Coachella phase), platform-heeled boots, and layers of chunky necklaces to my suburban high school with abandon. I found myself going through a real transformation, kind of like in The Princess Diaries when Mia gets her famous makeover, except I wasn’t becoming the princess of Genovia, I was just starting to wear loud clothes that my mum thought were weird. That period of experimentation that I went through is honestly what cha...
All in all, I have to say I seriously enjoyed switching my usual skincare routine for Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s. Surprisingly, a lot of my skin concerns are the same as the supermodel’s (who knew?), so products like the warming cleanser and serum were perfect for my skin type. While I could skip things like the face mist and toner, a lot of these products will be making a permanent home in my bathroom. This post was originally published at an earlier time and has since been updated. Next up, the cult moisturisers that Meghan Markle, Rosie HW and VB actually use. We’re only three months into 2021, so really it’s no surprise that we haven’t seen many dress trends surface quite yet, but with waves of warmer weather coming in fits and starts, it seems as though fashionable frocks are finally coming out to play. Case in point, there is one particular dress that has cropped up multiple times on our feeds over the last few weeks, and that’s Free People‘s Dahlia smocked midi. While the pale-yellow iteration has undoubtedly been the biggest hit, this trending dress actually comes in five summery hues, including mint and faded pink. With dramatic puffed sleeves, a tiered skirt, a smocked bust and daisy embroidery, it packs plenty of nostalgic fairytale vibes, which is sure to ad...
From polka dots and smocks to back-baring midis and pops of print, the results of 2021’s affordable dress deep dive are in, and I can confirm that we’re in for a stellar year. While spring might’ve only made a tentative debut so far this year, the odd 23° day last week has completely thrown us off course and has had us scrambling to dig out our summer dresses. Honestly, the British weather can be so hard to keep up with sometimes. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. Sifting through all the glorious newness that the spring and summer runways brought us not too long ago felt like such a breath of fresh air (especially compared to the stuffiness of the same boring sweat outfit I have been wearing on repeat since, oh, I don’t know, March last year?). So far, we’ve reported on the biggest spring trends overall, the biggest accessories trends, and the biggest shoe trends, and today, we’re here to hone in a bit tighter and share with you the most important handbag trends of 2021. At this point, who really knows how often we will be relying on our handbags as much as we used to? But if I know you all like I think I do, it’s safe to assume that no matter what the new norm ends up being, buying cute accessories will always...
Hats are pretty divisive. Every year, fashion flirts with a specific hat style; it crops up on our Instagram feeds, with insiders seemingly embracing them with open arms. But in reality? They generally don’t boast broad appeal. It’s very seldom that we see someone at the park wearing a straw hat three feet in diameter, after all. This year, however, there’s one hat that’s made the transition from the social media ether to real, everyday life—the humble baseball cap. Baseball caps started gaining traction last year when designers like Salvatore Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, and Tom Ford showcased them on the runway for the first time since, well, we can’t even remember. Editors and influencers soon got the memo and began wearing baseball caps with everythin...
The ’90s are back with a fervor. With trends first coming back onto the fashion scene a few seasons ago, we’ve truly hit our stride as we learn new and interesting ways to mix the retro trends into our more modern wardrobes. Without looking like we’re straight out of a Spice Girls music video or an Adidas advertisement from 1995, we’ve developed a huge crush on the style favorites that made the decade what it was. Our wardrobes are now rife with crop tops, track pants, and bomber jackets, and our after-hours looks consist of slip dresses, platform heels, and the occasional tube top. That’s right: We’ve reached peak ’90s nostalgia, but we’ve added a 2020 twist. Taking a retro trend and running with it isn’t always easy, though, so we’re looking for inspiration from some of our fav...
The premise of this article is simple. On a weekly basis, I stumble across lesser-known brands that are doing seriously cool stuff within the industry. My discovery of said brands generally results in me waxing lyrical to my long-suffering colleagues on Slack (where else?), so I thought it was about time that I shared some of these gems with you, our lovely readers. This week is a somewhat eclectic mix: two affordable sustainable fashion brands and one incredible size-diverse collab. Damson Madder and Seventy + Mochi make up the former and are brands that offer the rare combination of eco-credentials, design savvy and affordability. I have pieces from both brands and can confirm they look just as good in real life as they do online. I also...
I don’t mean to generalise here, but the thing I’ve learned about working with beauty editors is that they all have very high standards and unbelievable attention to detail. They can spot a slight shade difference in a relaunched red lipstick and have an acute understanding of ingredients. This is why I trust them implicitly, and my bathroom cupboard is basically an amalgamation of all of their advice. I still remain a beauty novice, but the general tips I’ve picked up on are 1) always, always wear SPF (even when it’s cloudy, and even in England), 2) invest in the products that give you a spa-like feeling, and 3) be kind to your skin, and don’t change or mix products too much.
