Global Citizen, NSIA set to raise $50 million to combat the effects of pandemic on Nigerians

Wikipedia Global Citizen and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) have partnered to create the Nigeria Solidarity Support Fund (NSSF), to combat the devastating effects of COVID-19 on Nigerians The initiative is to raise an initial fund of $50 million to combat the impact of the pandemic on Nigerians. The fund is also targeted at supporting vulnerable groups, strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare systems, and re-skill the Nigerian youth for a post-COVID era. Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has approved the appointment of Adeola Adeniyi Ajakaiye as the new Oluyin of Iyin-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun council area of the state. The commissioner for Information, Akin Omole, in a statement said the appointment was approved during Wednesday’s virtual meeting of the State Executive Council. Omole noted that the decision of the state government was a sequel to the selection of the new traditional ruler among the eight contestants by the kingmakers. Benue governor canvasses return to parliamentary system

Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has called for a parliamentary system of government as a more cost-effective democratic alternative for Nigeria. While inaugurating the State Constitution Review Committee in Markudi, Ortom said, the parliamentary system provides opportunities for power-sharing such that smaller parties also participate in governance, stressing that it is more accountable and considerably less complex. Police nab man for attempting to cut off woman’s breast

Police in Anambra State have arrested a 41-year-old man, one Ogbonna Nwankwo, for attempting to kill a 29-year-old woman, and cut off her breast at a motel in Ihite town, Orumba South Local Government Area of the state. The State Police PPRO, SP Haruna Mohammed, who disclosed this in a statement, said the incident happened on the 2/9/2020 at about 8 am, and that the duo involved reside in the same Ihite town. Mohammed said the suspect allegedly attempted to murder the lady inside the motel room by stabbing the victim with a knife in her stomach. Nigerian government not financially able to pay subsidy – minister

Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, Thursday, disclosed that the Federal Government was not currently capable, financially, to pay the subsidy. Addressing newsmen men in Abuja, Sylva disclosed that since the introduction of the deregulation policy, the country has saved about N1 trillion. Nigerian government approves reopening of NYSC orientation camps

The Federal Government has given the nod for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to begin preparations for reopening of orientation camps nationwide. Orientation camps were shut in March as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19. The Premier League has terminated its TV rights deal with China, its biggest overseas contract, leaving a huge hole in clubs’ finances. The deal with Chinese broadcaster PPTV was worth around £490m and had lasted only one of its three years. The conflict is said to have been around a fee of £160m that the Premier League was owed in March but did not receive. “The Premier League confirms that it has today terminated its agreements for Premier League coverage in China with its licensee in that territory,” a spokesman said on Thursday. “The Premier League will not be commenting further on the matter at this stage.” It is not known if the conflict is based purely on money or involves the escalating political tensions between China and the UK government.
