Anambra should put donations for coronavirus to work – doctors

As resident doctors at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, the Anambra State capital, embarked on a strike on Monday, they have advised the Anambra State Government to put donations made by philanthropists for COVID-19 to the purpose they were meant. The chapter President of the body Dr Obinna Aniagboso, told newsmen on Tuesday as he ran round to mobilise members for the strike that apart from the fact that his members are not paid hazard allowance as approved by the Federal Government, there were other outstanding issues the resident doctors are yet to thrash out with the State Government. Aniagboso said: “Throughout this period we work every day exposing ourselves to danger and you know the situation in Anambra state. There is increasing number...

Why 5G Adoption has been so Slow

If you have been waiting for 5G super-connectivity to roll out overnight and instantly change your life, you might be in for a surprise. It took nearly 10 years for 4G to become the dominant technology in cellular connectivity and those in the know, believe that it might even take longer for 5G to settle in nicely. Nevertheless, there are a few wonderful changes to look forward to as we slowly but surely move into the fourth industrial revolution. “First you have to understand that in theory 5G can support millisecond latencies,” explains Christopher Riley, CEO of the notebook company. “This means that we are not far from fully autonomous driverless cars, telesurgery – where your surgeon might be thousands of miles away, which has been tested over 5G with great success – and Virtual Realit...

Energy Storage Technology Could Put an End to Africa’s Blackouts

Sourced from The Times UK. A shift from Africa’s traditional approach to power generation is needed to unleash the continent’s clean energy potential and secure an African future free from blackouts. A strategy centred around energy storage and flexible power systems will be the key to guaranteeing the reliability of a high-renewable grid, while also lowering the cost of electricity for Africans. As Africa’s economies and populations steadily grow, so too does the demand for reliable electricity. Simply put, new power plants need to be built, and the reliability of electrical systems needs to be vastly improved. But here is the challenge: How can African countries build an electrical system that can both integrate a large amount of inexpensive but intermittent renewable energy, while at th...

3 Things Healthcare IT Teams can do to Improve Cybersecurity

Sourced from Getty Images. The healthcare industry has been forever changed by digital transformation. Innovation in the medical space has led to advances in new treatments as well as cost savings that do not negatively impact the quality of care. The added benefit: faster, better networks have allowed for the growth of telemedicine, bringing quality care to thousands who did not have access before. An unfortunate side effect has been that cybercriminals are targeting the healthcare sector now more than ever. As a result, cybersecurity is critical to the success of health systems, which are increasingly at risk as cybercriminals look to steal patient data or hold internal resources for ransom. The vulnerabilities that enable these attacks exist in any vertical, but in the case of healthcar...

Governor Wike slams NGF as toothless bulldog

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike on Monday slammed the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) for not standing up for embattled Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. He said the NGF had become a toothless bulldog as it has lost focus on its role in defending the rule of law. Wike said the Forum used to be non-partisan and a powerful voice on national issues. He noted that since the All Progressives Congress (APC) took over the NGF in 2015, governors have been turned to beggars. The governor spoke at a media parley held at Government House in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. He said: “Before 2015, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum used to be very powerful as symbols of their respective states but APC killed it because they were protecting the interest of the ruling party. “It is quite unfortunate ...

KCNA: DPRK military says ready to go into action

The military of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) said Tuesday it is getting itself fully ready for providing a sure military guarantee to any external measures to be taken by the Party and government. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) quoted a statement released by the General Staff of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) as saying that the army was keeping close watch “on the current situation in which the north-south relations are turning worse and worse,” and it would “rapidly and thoroughly implement any decisions and orders of the Party and government.” The statement said the army had accepted a government’s opinion “on studying an action plan for taking measures to make the army advance again into the zones that had been demilitarized” under the north-south agreement in...

Taiwo Awoniyi: It was hard to regain consciousness

Taiwo Awoniyi has thanked Mainz 05 medical team for helping to save his life after a close shave with death during Sunday’s German Bundesliga matchday 31 tie between Mainz and Augsburg at Opel Arena. Awoniyi was concussed after a clash of head with Augsburg defender Felix Uduokhai and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he completed his recovery. The 22-year-old who will miss Mainz 05 next Bundesliga fixture against Borussia Dortmund spoke through his club’s official website, and thank everyone who played their part in keeping him alive. He said: “The last thing I remember was when I headed the ball, then I passed out. It was really hard to regain my consciousness, and to properly “wake up”. It also took some time before I was able to remember everything. But I feel a lot better a...

Shocking statistics reveal Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba’s importance

Hearing the cliche of a player returning from a long-term injury feeling like a new signing will ring true for Manchester United fans but not with just one player. Both Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba are now fit and ready for action having missed a sizeable chunk of the season. It’s safe to say the dynamic duo are returning at the perfect time for United, with many hoping they can lead the team to a top-four spot in the campaign’s run-in. Rashford has been talismanic for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pogba has always helped the team play better than they normally do. The statistics speak for themselves for the productive pair and the Red Devils look stronger and stronger by the day for it. Having both goal-contributors return for Manchester United at an incredibly crucial time can only be a goo...

Hybrid Cloud Environments Provide Cheap Security for Financial Service Organisations

Sourced from ZDNet. Worldwide, financial services organisations are turning to the cloud as the means to transform outdated legacy systems and commit to disruptive technologies. The size of the public cloud market is expected to top $354 billion by the end of 2022, a significant jump from the less than $197 billion of 2018. But instead of going the all-or-nothing route, the hybrid cloud is positioned to provide companies with a more secure way of leveraging their data. Yunus Scheepers, CTO at SilverBridge, discusses these security benefits at a time when Microsoft Azure data centres in the country are attracting attention from financial services organisations as a safer alternative to what their current on-premise offerings can provide. A hybrid cloud environment also provides risk-averse ...

System of a Down’s John Dolmayan Calls Democrats the “True Bigots” While Wishing Trump a Happy Birthday

Despite being antithetical to the sociopolitical ideals that have long been presented in his band’s music, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan keeps doubling and tripling down on some far-right viewpoints. Now, he has gone so far as to call Democrats the “true bigots” in his latest Instagram rant. At this point, it may seem like Dolmayan is just trying to get a rise out of the band’s fans, but he has made it clear that he stands on the opposite end of the political spectrum than his bandmates, especially singer Serj Tankian. Already the two have expressed very different views about the ongoing protests, with Dolmayan hailing President Trump as the “greatest friend to minorities” and Tankian calling for the Trump regime to resign. Last week, Dolmayan followed up his initial comments by d...

Jon Stewart Discusses Police Brutality and FOX News in New Interview

With all that’s going on in the world, there’s no better time for the return of Jon Stewart. The former Daily Show host is back making the media rounds for his new movie, Irresistible, coming to PVOD on June 26th. Given the political nature of the film and the socio-political landscape it’s being released into, it’s no surprise Stewart has a lot to say about the current state of things. In a new interview with The New York Times, he touched on everything from Trump to police brutality to FOX News, all with his usual intelligence and nuance. Some might wish Stewart would return to the televised political comedy and commentary scene, but even if he were to return (he’s certainly not eager to) it wouldn’t be like The Daily Show. He praised the show’s current host, Trevor Noah, ...
