Finance bros and octane-fuelled car nuts are the usual crowds at a track day, powered by the bravado of ego-enhancing talk about who’s got the bigger… engine. But that’s not the case at Mercedes-Benz World, a monolithic museum housing everything from Palace’s Mercedes-AMG collaboration to dissected Formula 1 race cars and some of the marque’s most iconic machines, as well as a race track and dirt course to boot. With the Mercedes-AMG C63 S Estate at Hypebeast’s disposal, it was expected that we were about to have a good time. But instead of having fun, Mercedes-Benz World spent time honing one’s craft, pairing us with a dedicated driver to teach you how to expertly operate its V8 family wagon on a handling circuit, drag strip, and skid pad that replicated black ice. The experience enable...
The U.S. government has now granted a loan of $2.5 billion USD to General Motors to further its EV battery development. According to a new report from Reuters, the Energy Department has now granted the loan to GM and its joint venture with South Korean tech giant LG. It will be the first new grant from the government’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing loan program since 2010 and will help the two companies construct more EV battery production facilities in order to further their efforts in developing and manufacturing Ultium Cells. The loan will also help contribute towards the progress to realize President Joe Biden’s goal to reach 50% electrification in automotive production in the U.S. by 2030, with Ultium saying that it’ll also create 5,000 new jobs statesid...
A leaked brochure from a customer of a JDM 2023 Honda Civic Type R has just given fans further info on the type of power the new generation of Civic Type R produces. The previous FK8 produced 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque whereas its US market versions saw a 10 horsepower reduction. The spy shot of the brochure indicated that the new (and 90 lbs heavier) FL5 will produce 326 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque for its 2.0L turbocharged engine — 10 more horsepower and 15 more pounds of torque. Given that the past JDM vs North American versions saw a 10-horsepower difference, many looking to order the new Type R in the States are thinking that the North American version will see also see a 10-hp reduction with torque numbers remaining the same as its JDM counterpart. シビックタイプR、契...
Shibukawa City in Gunma Prefecture, Japan has sponsored taxis inspired by the prominent cars from the Initial D anime and manga series. As part of the city’s tourism campaign, three cars be available to cater to passengers around the city until the end of March next year. The vehicles will be styled after Takumi Fujiwara’s Toyota AE86, Keisuke Takahashi’s Mazda RX-7 and a car featuring an illustration of the four main characters from the original series. A German custom workshop specializing in widebody US cars has transformed a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat with widebody kit, . Sebastian Bader, founder of S. Bader Karosserie und Lack in Lebus, transformed his own 2016 Hellcat with a widebody kit from Lion’s Kit, which added a further 9cm (3.5inches) to the width of the car’s rear wheel arches, on top of Dodge’s own modifications. The kit adds a front splitter, sill extensions, side extensions to the rear apron and a larger ducktail-style spoiler lip, giving the Dodge “an even meaner, more athletic look.” On top of the kit, Bader added an engine hood from the more powerful “Redeye” Hellcat variant, with two additional outlets. To fill the added volume of the extended wheel arches, Bader added Schmidt FS Line three-part wheels fitted with 25mm...
Tesla reported a quarterly decline in revenue and earnings due to supply chain complications emerging, inflation, and an extended shutdown in China. The company still managed to generate $16.9 billion USD in revenue in the second quarter. However, that is lower than the $18.8 billion USD generated in the first quarter. Tesla stated that they earned $2.3 billion USD in the second quarter compared to $3.3 billion in the first quarter. CEO Elon Musk highlighted the company’s achievement despite the decline, stating that the quarter ended with the highest vehicle production in its history. Musk credited the arrival of its new facilities in Berlin and Aus...
Maserati wants a slice of the action and it aims to do so with “Project24,” a non-road-homologated, track-only experiential car that takes what the marque has learned with its MC20 and applies it to the race circuit. Limited to just 62 units, this highly-limited car is set to be a machine destined only for racing, meaning those that get their hands on it will likely experience an incredibly formidable car akin to other track specials from brands such as Ferrari and Porsche. To create the new car, Maserati took its V6 Nettuno engine from the MC20 and added new turbochargers, boosting power to 740 HP while also making plenty of state-of-the-art updates. Unlike other brands, Maserati is focused with lightness as opposed to power. As a result, it’s expected that “Projec...
Honda has finally unmasked its 2023 Civic Type R. Revealed in a world premiere in Tokyo, Japan, the new FL5 succeeds the 2017 – 2021 FK8, and outperforms all previous Type R models with its 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo engine. Once again channeling Honda’s racing spirit in achieving pure sports performance for pure driving joy, the new design makes use of the 6-speed manual transmission and rev match control system, and couples that with updated aerodynamics for balance, stability, and response at high speeds. Borrowing lines from the eleventh generation Civic, this new Type R foregoes the angular lines of the previous model but does maintain the “low & wide” stance. While no performance specs have been released by Honda, they have repeatedly stated that this is the mos...

“Phantoms exist in a completely rarified atmosphere,” regaled Rolls-Royce’s now-ex Director of Global Communications, Richard Carter, to the luxury lifestyle journalists and gurus in the five-star Maybourne Riviera Hotel in Monaco – a fitting backdrop to test the new Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII. But as Hypbeast was soon to find out, really guests weren’t here to “drive” the Phantom, because being behind the wheel misses the point of this car entirely. Carter continued to describe the experience of a Rolls-Royce as “completely eccentric,” alluding to the limitless nature of personalization, allowing a Phantom to suit the client’s needs and how each car is an extension of oneself. It’s not rare to hear about a car’s “personality,” whether it is “charming” or a “brute,” but only Rolls-Royce woul...
