Don’t cry for the electrified future if it’s going to be filled with efficiently gorgeous 818-horsepower monsters like the 2022 Ferrari 296 GTB. Yes, this is the first official Ferrari-badged road car to employ a V-6 engine, but the brand has raced loads of them. It’s also the first hybridized Ferrari not to electrify the front axle, saving weight and maintaining the dynamic purity of rear-wheel drive. 120-Degree V-6 Hybrid, Just Like the McLaren Artura! Great powertrain-design engineering minds are likely to arrive at similar conclusions when solving similar problems, and there are indeed many similarities between the 296 GTB and McLaren Artura powertrains. The 120-degree bank angle leaves plenty of room to nestle turbos in the valley of each, and both supercar-makers em...
The innovative eBussy electric bus system from German startup company ElectricBrands will never come to be. Say it again: eBussy (insert snickers). What could have perpetually been the butt of every conceivable joke will be joked about no more. The undoubtedly sophisticated Germans who manifested the eBussy project must have concealed muffled laughs (like us) as they engineered, designed, sculpted, and meticulously labored away at the eBussy. Perhaps there were too many slip-ups during meetings. Perhaps there were too many Google-search debacles. Perhaps people just didn’t understand that eBussy was short for electric bus system. Whatever the exact reason, the eBussy name is dead, and it now identifies as the XBUS. See all 11 photos Indeed, long live ElectricBrands’ quest ...
Kia Sorento Full Overview So you want a five-seat SUV. Well, actually, something that seats seven would be helpful. But it shouldn’t be too big. And it must be comfortable, with amenities for everyone. Quick enough, too—who likes going slow? Plus, sometimes you take that dirt shortcut, so it needs off-road capability. Just make sure it’s also practical, safe, and a good value. Is that too much to ask for? The 2021 Kia Sorento has been redesigned this year, and seeks to do all that and do it better than before. We brought in a Sorento SX X-Line AWD—at $43,765 to start, the most upscale, powerful, and off-road(ish) model in the lineup—for track testing and real-world evaluation to find out if this everything-for-everyone strategy works. First Impressions Take a moment to check ou...
With deliveries of the spanking new Ford Bronco finally underway and rumors of a Bronco Raptor circulating the interwebs, Jeep is preparing some preemptive one-upmanship by launching the 2022 Wrangler with a new Xtreme Recon package and a 4.88:1 axle option. Jeep’s 80th-anniversary presents to the Wrangler Unlimited will officially debut at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show. See all 14 photos What’s Included in the Jeep Wrangler Xtreme Recon Package? Basically, this is the factory delivering a lot of the stuff that extreme off-roaders have, up until now, been paying the aftermarket for. Working from the ground up, there’s a set of 35-inch-diameter LT315/70R17C BF Goodrich KO2 All-Terrain tires mounted to 8.0 x 17-inch beadlock capable wheels (base Rubicon models run LT285/70R17 ...
It isn’t often the case that an automaker debuts a concept whose design faithfully transfers over to the production model. Wild wheels are downsized, seductive curves are straightened, and bold looks are generally watered down by safety regulations and manufacturing realities. The all-new 2022 Infiniti QX60 is the exception to that rule, debuting with styling that is nearly identical to the stunning Monograph concept Infiniti showed last year and way, way beyond its predecessor‘s humdrum visage. The newly redesigned luxury three-row SUV sports a more aggressive look and oozes more swagger with its elegant fender bulges, tightened up roofline, and wider stance. The bestselling three-row crossover from Infiniti has not only broken out of its shell with this new gen...
Gone in 60 seconds? More like gone in six hours. At least that’s how long we assume it took the thief (or thieves) to strip and gut the cabin of this new Subaru WRX STI. The above video (which, we should warn, includes a couple of F bombs) shows a red WRX STI missing its wheels, brakes, and the majority of its interior bits, including the front and rear seats. It’s a clean-looking gut job and one that certainly took a bit of time to complete. According to the blog Tire Meets Road, the incident occurred at Schomp Subaru in Aurora, Colorado, and a video of the vehicle’s torn-apart state was first uploaded to TikTok in mid-May of 2021. We reached out to Schomp Subaru for comment and will update this post when or if we hear back from a dealership spokesperson. Never...
The signs are right there in front of you: the 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup has some latent performance potential. With its available turbocharged 2.0-liter “EcoBoost” engine and optional all-wheel-drive, the little Maverick should already be a solid performer. Credit the fact the 250 hp four-pot only has to move around 3,700 pounds of truck. But there are spicier powertrain options that, in theory, can find a home under the Maverick’s hood, and that inspired us to imagine what a Maverick ST might look like. See all 45 photos Let’s deal with the plausible tangibles before we get into our speculative Maverick ST. The unibody Maverick rides on the C2 platform, which it shares with the Bronco Sport, the Escape, the European-market Focus, and—most importantly—the L...
Initially, the Blue Oval estimated the driving ranges for the Mustang Mach-E GT and Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition would come in at 250 miles and 235 miles, respectively. Now, however, the Mach-E GT is estimated by the EPA to go 270 miles on a full charge of its battery pack, while the GT Performance Edition nets 260 miles. Ford says the Mach-E GT Performance Edition, equipped with Pirelli summer tires and magnetic dampers, can make a run from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The Performance Edition generates 480 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque and has a starting price of $66,000. With the same horsepower output but slightly less torque, the Mach-E GT, which starts at $61,000, will reach 60 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds. Hyundai Venue Full Overview A Mixed Bag of Materials As the 2021 Hyundai Venue Denim’s name suggests, its exterior and interior are covered in Hyundai’s Denim blue color. Inside, Hyundai uses blue faux leather and plastic throughout the interior. The genuine leather-wrapped steering wheel also gets the Denim treatment. Contrasting tan plastic makes the space look even more like a yacht club, for better or worse. See all 29 photos As good as the Hyundai Venue Denim looks, cheap-feeling hard plastic is noticeable. The elbow rests, which aren’t even padded on the SE and SEL trims, are covered with an ultra-thin layer of padding that doesn’t do much for comfort. The center armrest, also blue, offers a bit more support during longer drives. The rear seat gets the same ar...
A century ago, Aston Martin’s A3 was a state-of-the-art sporting machine. Known as chassis no. 3, but commonly referred to by its alphanumeric designation, this roadster was the third of five prototypes that helped to launch the brand in the early 1920s. Now, the company is paying tribute to this oldest surviving Aston Martin with a special Vantage Roadster commissioned by a dealership in the United Kingdom and brought to life by Q. The Vantage Roadster doesn’t exactly capture the overall look of the spindly vintage racer, but it does have a number of tasteful elements that clearly honor its ancestor. The aluminum grille surround and the fender panels are a nod to A3’s bare metal hood. A smattering of bronze-colored bits—such as the brake calipers, the control knobs ...
Honda Civic Full Overview First, and most important: Yes, there will be a stick-shift Civic Hatchback, and not just in the entry level models. Three-pedal enthusiasts will be able to get a six-speed manual with either the base 2.0-liter engine or the hot-rod 1.5-liter turbo, the latter in top-of-the-line Sport Touring trim. With that elephant out of the way, we can talk more about the changes to the new car compared to the suddenly old 10th-generation Honda Civic Hatchback. What struck us first about the 2022 Civic hatch is how smooth and simple the back end looks. The twin spoilers that adorned the old model are gone, and the change makes all the visual difference, emphasizing the new car’s sleek, coupe-like profile. See all 26 photos The styling changes aren’t limited to the ...
There is a lot to like about the current Audi RS3, which was introduced for the 2017 model year—in particular, the small sport sedan’s rear-biased, clearly performance-oriented Haldex all-wheel-drive system. But if there’s anything the Germans are good at, it’s improving upon the already damn good. Hence, Audi has developed the system further for the next-generation model, giving it true torque vectoring across the rear axle. See all 68 photos Audi calls the new twin-clutch system the RS Torque Splitter—and it does just that. Rather than use a single clutch pack ahead of the rear differential and brake-based torque vectoring system, the RS Torque Splitter actively apportions torque from side to side, increasing torque to the outer rear wheel through corners. This system s...
