Take a Look Inside the Production 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS

Mercedes-Benz has been testing and teasing its Tesla Model S-fighting EQS all-electric luxury sedan for a long time now, and in a final step ahead of the full unveil has pulled the sheet off the wild new interior. Yes, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS will have a dashboard-spanning “Hyperscreen” display, but that’s just one of many special options and features of this new EV flagship. See all 48 photos Two Dashboards to Chose From The so-called Hyperscreen (of which we have a deep dive you should read if you haven’t), a 56-inch wide concave glass panel with three integrated OLED screens making up the entire dashboard, is the showstopper, but it’s not the only option. It’s actually an optional upgrade and you get a lot for your money—which is good because even ...

2022 Genesis GV70 SUV First Look: The Luxury Brand Continues to Roll

Genesis dropped info and photos of the GV70, an SUV with all the now-expected touches that define the bold styling language on the rest of the Genesis lineup—two-bar headlights and taillights, huge pentagonal grille, elegant body lines—that familiarity in no way makes it less exciting. First off, the GV70 is Genesis’s opening shot at one of the car market’s hottest segments, where it will compete head-on with the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Acura RDX, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and other compact luxury SUVs. It’s an even bolder salvo than the G70 sport sedan, which was released for 2017 into the competitive waters where the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class swim, if only because of its expected greater sales volume. 2022 Genesis GV70 Interior Review: World-Class Luxury

Genesis GV70 Full Overview We just had our first chance to climb in and poke around the all-new 2022 Genesis GV70 compact luxury SUV, and goodness—it has quite the interior. It appears moving down a segment in size and price from the South Korean luxury brand’s first ever SUV, the mid-size GV80, didn’t have much if any effect on the quality and presentation of the GV70‘s cabin. We’ll put extra emphasis on presentation here, as, unlike some contenders’ in this segment, the GV70’s interior is an aesthetic triumph. Depending on how you spec it, the cabin is awash in Nappa leather, wood, metal, carbon fiber, and/or microsuede, with the leather and microsuede available in a range of interesting shades, some of which you might be surprised to find paired—like ...

The 2022 Lexus IS500 F Sport Performance Launch Edition Goes Incognito—Literally

Following the V-8-powered IS500 F Sport premiere last month, Lexus unveiled the 2022 IS500 F Sport Performance’s exclusive Launch Edition at Sebring International Raceway. Limited to 500 examples, the Launch Edition will carry over the same 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V-8 rated at 472 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque but distinguishes itself from the regular-production IS500 F Sport by way of subtle cosmetic touches. Incognito Mode First up is its new “Incognito” white-ish paint hue that was recently added to the Lexus color palette. Other updates consist of 19-inch forged BBS wheels finished in matte black that shave approximately four pounds of unsprung weight from each corner on top of the weight savings brought by the regular IS500’s wheels relat...

Dodge Charger, Challenger Security Mode Will Slow Thieves’ Rolls—to Idle

Just over 150 cars are stolen per day in the United States. Vehicle theft may be (relatively) uncommon, but it’s very inconvenient and invasive—and altogether more familiar to Dodge Charger sedan and Challenger coupe owners than most. Why? These powerful American muscle cars are popular among thieves, and are often stolen for parts and plain old joyrides. Dodge has responded with a new security feature that limits the vehicles’ speed to just 3 mph by restricting engine performance to idle provided owners can set the car into “Security Mode.” Activating and (more importantly) deactivating this mode requires the use of a four-digit security code. Should someone hop behind the wheel and get the car started without this code, the would-be thief would be kept f...

(Record Scratch!) You’re Probably Wondering How Lexus Got a Record Player in Here

Shout “enhance!” a few times at your computer like you’re in some kind of CSI-type show, or just peer more closely, and you might notice something odd in this 2021 Lexus IS‘ glove box. An arm, a needle, a vinyl record … yup, that’s a turntable. In the glovebox. In 2021. And if you aren’t a turntablist, or a vinyl enthusiast, you might not recall that records skip. See all 7 photos Before even the eight-track player, a few companies experimented with in-car record players, and it was a goofy extravagance that never really worked all that well. Because, well, records skip, even with specialized spring-isolated enclosures—especially when installed by indifferent dealers back in the day. Zoinks! 2022 Nissan Z Car’s Pricing, Specs, and Details Spill Forth

But thanks to a massive leak—more like a water main break—on enthusiast forum 400ZClub, we now have a ton of new unofficially released information to pour over. According to poster Houston.z35, the next Nissan Z car won’t be called the 400Z. The name is just “Nissan Z.” This, despite the fact that there will be a 400-hp version of the 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 VR30DDTT engine under the hood, and most of us anticipated a numerical upgrade from the current 370Z nomenclature to something 400-ish. As we suspected earlier, the next Z’s underpinnings will be largely carryover from the current 370Z. That means the chassis, hard points, and cutlines will all be the same, but the bodywork is obviously quite different and eye-catching. There will be two transmissions availab...

New Jeep 4xe Charging Network Makes Hybrid Off-Roading Easier

In conjunction with the 2021 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep is announcing a Jeep-branded EV charging network for its new 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The Jeep 4xe Charging Network, operated by Electrify America, will provide Level 2 (240-volt) charging that’ll fully recharge the 4xe’s 17 kilowatt-hour battery pack in about two hours. The chargers will be connected directly to the power grid or use solar power. A full charge allows for 21 miles of electric range, and with 49 MPGe Wrangler 4xe adventurers should be able to tackle more miles on the trail using electrons rather than dino juice. See all 36 photos Jeep 4xe Charging Network stations won’t be in the middle of the city. Rather, they’ll be installed at or near trailheads, ideal for a quick top-off be...

2021 Honda Accord vs. Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima: Midsize Sedan Madness

Honda Accord Full Overview When I was a kid, the term “the Big Three” was synonymous with General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. To be accurate, I’m old enough to remember the Big Four, but let’s not go there. If one says the phrase “the Big Three” these days, they might very well be talking about the three best-selling vehicles in America: the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, and Ram 1500. As for cars, the time when the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry were the three best-selling cars in America is long gone. These days, SUVs have taken over, and only Toyota’s Camry remains as a top 10 best–seller. Still, the Honda, Toyota, and Nissan midsize sedans remain hugely important (both the Accord and Altima are among the top-selling 25...

How Will Ford and Rivian’s Partnership Unfold Going Forward?

It is a strategic, long-term partnership, Ford CEO Jim Farley says. Ford will look for forms of co-development or sharing of technology or platforms in the future. “But we’re not just running over to Plymouth [the Michigan town, where Rivian Engineering and Design Center is located] and giving them assignments.” RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian, is equally bullish. “We have a very good relationship with Ford,” he tells MotorTrend. “We haven’t announced anything with Ford in terms of what we might do together,” he says. “We’re just being very thoughtful of the discussions that are going on.” When there is something to announce, “we would announce together.” See all 38 photos Ford is More Than an Investor in Rivian Ford ...

Ford Exploring Prechamber Ignition Technology, Like Maserati Uses, on F-150

Diesel engines used to initiate combustion in a prechamber that housed the glow-plug for cold-starts, but fancy high-pressure direct-injection pretty much retired the prechamber. We’ve recently learned the 2022 Maserati MC20 Nettuno V-6 engine is reviving it—in gasoline engines—as a way to speed the burn rate and extract more work and performance out of the air-fuel mixture. Now we hear Ford is working with FEV, an engineering consultancy, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory on a prechamber engine aimed at boosting efficiency. The $10-million three-year project, partly funded by the Department of Energy, aims to develop a “Next Generation High Efficiency Boosted Engine.” Specifically, the effort aims to achieve a 23 percent improvement in efficiency and a 15 percent re...

2021 Audi Q5 First Test: The Popular Kid Gets a Fresh Wardrobe

Audi Q5 Full Overview Just before 2020 ended, we had the chance to drive the 2021 Audi SQ5, the sportier variant of the Q5 powered by a punchy V-6 engine. Like we noted back then, the SQ5 delivers the best of both worlds. It’s a comfortable SUV that’s great for everyday driving, but also more dynamic when the road turns twisty. Now, we’ve driven and tested the 2021 Audi Q5, the toned-down normal version that competes in the compact-luxury-SUV segment, one of today’s most popular. As you’d expect, then, the Q5 is indeed Audi’s most popular model, making up 25 percent of the brand’s sales, with the conventionally powered, non-S version responsible for most of that chunk (the balance includes not just SQ5s, but also Q5 PHEVs). In order to be a po...
