General Motors announced it will build an electric Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup truck in Detroit. The new Silverado is designed from the ground up to be an electric vehicle, GM President Mark Reuss said at an event at the Detroit-Hamtramck plant that has been renamed Factory Zero because it is being retooled to only build electric vehicles. The Silverado EV will have a driving range of more than 400 miles on a single charge, Reuss said. There will be versions for both retail and commercial customers, as well as a wide variety of configurations and options for buyers to choose from. Mercedes-EQ, the all-electric sub-brand of Mercedes-Benz, has taken the next step in its slow-walk reveal of the EQS flagship sedan, dropping a number of key specs for EV fans to salivate over. The 2022 Mercedes EQS is predicted to travel up to 478 miles on a charge based on the generous WLTP test cycle, hit 62 mph from a stop in as little as 4.3 seconds, and gain up to 186 miles of range in 15 minutes on a 200 kilowatt DC Fast charger. We knew the GMC Hummer EV SUV was coming a year after the GMC Hummer EV electric pickup truck, which is why we were confused to learn the pickup launches for the 2022 model year but the companion SUV is a 2024 model. What gives? General Motors has been pushing this program hard, so any delay would be a setback. Hummer chief engineer Al Oppenheiser assured us there is no big delay, or a large gap, between the two Hummer EV launches. Instead, all Hummer EV SUV trims will be available for the 2024 model year, while the Hummer EV pickup rolls out its trim level over the course of three model years.
