If hydrogen fuel cell cars are your thing, there are a lot of good reasons to buy the all-new 2021 Toyota Mirai over the outgoing model. Now that Toyota has announced pricing, you have almost 10,000 more. The 2021 Toyota Mirai XLE starts at $50,495, which is almost $10,000 less than its forebear. Toyota has also added a second model to the Mirai line, the Limited, which features upgraded interior trim, rear-seat climate control, a panoramic moonroof, and a few other odds and ends, and lists for $66,995. See all 20 photos Regardless of trim, every 2021 Mirai includes complimentary maintenance for three years or 35,000 miles, as well as $15,000 or three years’ worth of hydrogen fuel, whichever you burn through first. Mirai drivers also get 21 days of free car rentals should they need t...
BMW M3 Full Overview This comparison test between the BMW M3 sedan and Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG was originally published on April 1, 1997. This comparison is between—inarguably—the two most desirable compact sedans ever built. The limited-production BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG are each so fantastic, so fundamentally tremendous, that this test could degenerate into a love-fest of praise. They’re quick, handle brilliantly, brake instantly, and are built with the structural integrity of a beryllium molecule. We could almost put the critical blinders on, engage WordPerfect’s excellent built-in thesaurus, and let the superlatives fly. Still, though this test will draw out the subtleties and distinctions, it will lapse into a few gooey gushes. Forgive us, we’re human. Neith...
Last year, Jaguar showed off the Vision Gran Turismo Coupé, a virtual design study showcased in the Gran Turismo video game. Like most digital-only creations, it’s fanciful, futuristic, and provocative. The Vision GT SV is an evolution of the earlier design, again rendered digitally, but also paired with a real-life, full-scale model to help realize the design itself. We’re unlikely to ever see anything like this hit the road, but as Porsche’s recent design studies showed us, even certain shapes never intended for production can influence future road car design. Plus, unlike those previously unseen Porsches, you can actually spend some time with this Jag if you own a PlayStation. The Nissan GT-R (X) 2050 concept is quite obviously a flight into the future. Designed by Nissan intern Jaebum (JB) Choi, it is an autonomous supercar designed for a single occupant who puts on a dockable body suit, climbs in, and lies face down and face first. This contortionist exercise is no mere sketch, either. David Woodhouse, vice president of Nissan Design America, was intrigued enough by Choi’s vision that he approved a full-scale model to be built. See all 35 photos Nissan GT-R (X) Concept: All About the Size and Shape The concept is almost 10 feet long but is only about 2 feet high. It only has room for one person—who, technically, is not the driver since it is an autonomous vehicle. Would you ride in something like this, in that face-first, face-down position? We̵...
Arguably the most important new global product for the Blue Oval is the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. Not only is this the first use of the Mustang name on an electric vehicle (not to mention four-door, or SUV), but it’s Ford’s first new global electric vehicle since the afterthought compliance vehicle that was the Focus Electric. In other words, this is one new vehicle Ford can’t afford to screw up here or anywhere, really. Ford is therefore making one small change to the Mustang Mach-E to suit local tastes in the Chinese market—currently the largest EV market in the world. That change is to the front fascia of the Chinese-market Mustang Mach-E—essentially the Mach-E’s face. While North American and European Mustang Mach-Es (both sourced from Ford’s ...
Toyota Yaris Full Overview Every so often Toyota, purveyor of sensible, family-friendly SUVs, minivans, and sedans, builds a car that absolutely blows you away: The 2000GT that debuted in 1965 and was intended to take on the Jaguar E-Type; the rally-inspired Celica GT-Four of the early ’90s; the flawed but fabulous Lexus LFA with its screaming naturally aspirated V-10. The 2020 Toyota GR Yaris is without a doubt a member of this select group. In fact, it might be the best of the lot. You see, this little hot hatch, specifically designed and engineered to allow the Yaris to compete in the World Rally Championship, is perhaps the most focused driver’s car you can buy right now this side of a Porsche 911 GT3 RS. First things first: The GR Yaris has nothing in common with the subco...
2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: New Electric Architecture Mercedes plans to put six EVs on the market by 2022, and at the forefront of the three-pointed star’s electric vehicle pursuits is the EQS sedan. Unlike the GLC-based Mercedes EQC electric crossover, the EQS is due to ride on a dedicated EV platform, dubbed EVA2. It might be the S-Class of Mercedes EVs, but the EQS won’t share its architecture with the brand’s recently redesigned flagship sedan. Although we’ve yet to hear from the German automaker regarding the production EQS’s specifications, we suspect the big EV will initially debut with all-wheel-drive (one electric motor at each axle) and an approximately 100-kWh battery pack. 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Big Range See all 27 photos 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS: Deca...
Ford Mustang Mach-E Full Overview My first Ford Mustang had a 4.6-liter V-8, five-speed manual, and rear-wheel drive. My next one might have two electric motors, a one-speed, and all-wheel drive. The new 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E is an all-electric, four-door, battery-powered SUV that’ll eventually have up to 480 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque. More than that, the new Mustang Mach-E is going to force the world to rethink just what it considers a Mustang. Is it a two-door performance coupe or convertible powered by internal combustion? Or is it a four-door performance SUV with the potential to beat the Tesla Model Y at its own game? ¿Por qué no los dos? I’d argue it doesn’t really matter. What does is that the 2021 Mustang Mach-E is quite good and pays appropriate homage to its...
The EUV is a new nameplate—EUV is short for “Electric Utility Vehicle”—and expands Chevy’s EV reach to a second Bolt-badged model. The EUV is larger and taller than the Bolt hatchback; it is nearly six inches longer than the current Bolt sports approximately three inches more space between its wheel centers (which ought to translate into more interior space). This video marks our first look at the EUV’s signature front lighting, which includes sequential front turn signals. General Motors is not the first automaker to use this tech, but the company notes the EUV is the first Chevy to use such a feature. The Bolt EUV rides on the same BEV2 architecture as the Bolt, which means it does not share GM’s new BEV3 electric vehicle architecture, powered by the co...
Hood ornaments are dying. They have been for a long time, due to both safety concerns and automotive fashion trends. Jaguar laid down its leaper years ago, Lincoln’s crosshair thing was shot down years back, and Cadillac’s ornate wreath crest fell off its vehicles’ hoods and into the grille decades ago (then lost its wreath!). Mercedes-Benz remains one of the few bastions in the automotive space for the seemingly quaint marker, alongside Bentley and Rolls-Royce. But the majestic, hood-mounted three-pointed star is facing down a similar fate, at least here in the U.S. The ’21 E-Class represents a remarkable mid-cycle update of an existing car, with Mercedes having improved and made over the luxury sedan, coupe, and wagon so deftly the E earned our MotorTrend Car...
Porsche 911 Full Overview Porsche brought five über-special 911 GT cars out to its Experience Center track in Los Angeles and let our own Jonny Lieberman lap them, around two dozen times each. These cars aren’t just some of the best Porsche 911s ever made, no, this quintet represents perhaps five of the best sports cars the world has ever seen. One of them might even be better than that. Was this the greatest morning of Lieberman’s life? Yes, only because his son was born at night. So, read on for his impressions of these epic Porsche GT cars—and which ones are best. 996-Generation Porsche GT3 RS See all 69 photos What Is It and Why Is It Special? The Bugatti Royale returns, but this time, it’s not as a car. Instead, the French automaker pins the name to a new home audio system it’s created in conjunction with Tidal, the lossless audio—and high-definition video—streaming service. Like the Bugatti Type 41 Royale of the late 1920s, the Royale home audio system features imposing proportions and art-deco design. Each of these grand gadgets houses four subwoofers, a three-way front speaker with a midrange driver, and a diamond-diaphragm tweeter—the latter of which Bugatti also includes in its four-wheeled machines. A matching music controller completes the kit. While the Royale’s technology may impress audiophiles (or possibly leave them wanting—we’ll leave that to the expert audiophiles to determine), the s...
