2021 Nissan Kicks First Look: Pumped Up Kicks

Despite occupying the bottom spot in Nissan‘s SUV hierarchy, the 2021 Kicks looks to shed its entry-level aesthetic. Going a long way in that effort is the freshly updated subcompact SUV‘s new front end, which features a larger grille, a more expressive lower fascia, and a thinner headlamp design. At the rear, the 2021 Kicks adopts a new rear bumper and a snazzier set of rear taillights with an LED light bar that spans the width of the vehicle. 2021 Nissan Kicks: A Kick to the Cabin But as transformative as the exterior changes of the 2021 Kicks are, the largest changes appear inside the cabin. Specifically, those of the higher-end SV and SR trims, both of which feature a new 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a redesigned center console with an integrated armres...

2021 Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel First Test: Not the Perfect Truck You Were Expecting

Jeep Gladiator Full Overview It’s happened to all of us. You order something new off the menu because the description and ingredients sound like a sure bet, only to find out the dish is just OK. It happens with cars and trucks, too. The 2021 Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel sounds like a winning combination of torquey diesel powertrain, off-road suspension, and Jeep character, and it is all of those things. It’s just not great as an actual, you know, pickup truck. The Gladiator EcoDiesel Sure Is Quick, Though . . . The good news is our initial impressions were right: The EcoDiesel engine delivers acceleration that is noticeably quicker than the standard gasoline engine. The quickest Gladiator we’ve ever tested, another base model Sport but one that was fitted with the gas V-6 and...

2021 Nissan Armada First Look: Patrolling for Full-Size SUV Shoppers

Call it collateral damage, because Nissan’s updates to the 2021 Armada full-size SUV manage to inadvertently undermine the role of its luxury-oriented, mechanically similar Infiniti QX80 counterpart. Admittedly, the Infiniti‘s premium badge and slightly more sculptural sheetmetal help set it apart from the Nissan‘s more plebeian nameplate and squarer looks. Still—and as in past generations—it seems those are about the only reasons to spring for a 2021 QX80 over a top-spec 2021 Armada. 2021 Nissan Armada: Maw Patrol Like its international counterpart, the Nissan Patrol, the 2021 Nissan Armada sports fresh front and rear ends that incorporate the Japanese brand’s latest design language. Anchored by a prominent grille and blocky LED headlights, the refreshed ArmadaR...

2021 Ford Bronco Sport 1.5T First Drive Review: Entry Baby

Ford Bronco Sport Full Overview Ford has clearly designed the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport to be the king of the compact, mass-market, crossover-based, rock-climbers hill. And indeed, a fully kitted-out Badlands model appears as though it may have what it takes to leave its Jeep Renegade and Compass Trailhawk competitors on the unflattering end of a winch. But the majority of Renegade and Compass buyers don’t spring for a Trailhawk, and the same is likely to be true of Bronco Sport Badlands models. So just how livable is that turbocharged 1.5-liter three-banger that “powers” most Bronco Sports? 2021 Ford Bronco Sport 1.5T: Acceleration Domination? Perhaps the most direct comparison is with the Renegade, which also gets a turbocharged three-cylinder—a 1.3-liter unit that current...

2021 Ford Bronco Sport Interior Review: Big and Substantial

Ford Bronco Sport Full Overview Here’s the overwhelming first impression the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport makes upon first climbing aboard: “Whoa, this thing feels big and substantial.” The long, broad, largely horizontal hood with is raised “fender sights” along the outboard edges lend a real sense of size and substance that make you doubt the fact that this trucklet in fact measures 7.8 inches shorter in length than the Ford Escape it’s based on, with a 1.6-inch shorter wheelbase. In fact, the two vehicles’ front overhangs are identical; it’s the Sport’s tail that’s bobbed. The Bronco Sport’s “Safari-Step” roof is 4.1 to 5.3 inches taller than the Escape’s, which enables higher, more upright seating in both row...

2021 Ford Bronco Sport First Drive: Small SUV, Big Off-Road Performance

Ford Bronco Sport Full Overview “If it were me out here wheeling with our crew,” I said to the Ford employees perched on the hillside beside me, “I wouldn’t have even tried that with a stock crossover.” I wasn’t stroking any egos; I meant it. I’ve brought enough trucks and SUVs back with body damage (or worse) to know which obstacles are asking for trouble. Two hours into wheeling the 2021 Ford Bronco Sport up a reasonably tough trail and already seriously impressed with what the little rig could do, I still wouldn’t have bothered with that obstacle. The initial approach was steep enough to effectively be a stair step. The gully it was in was narrow enough that the only driving line was to take it head-on, straddling the deep, V-shaped ditch ...

2021 Nissan Armada Serves Up Hints of the Global Patrol SUV

Ahead of the refreshed 2021 Nissan Armada‘s official debut later this month, Nissan released a very brief teaser video of what we can expect from updated full-size behemoth. From the looks of things, the large-and-in-charge Armada receives a host of exterior tweaking inspired by the aesthetics of the similarly updated Nissan Patrol that broke cover last year. Hardly surprising, considering the current Armada is essentially a Patrol repackaged for the U.S. market. What we see from the seconds-long teaser is the new Armada blasting along a straight desert road, with our only true look at the new SUV being from a bird’s-eye—er, more likely, drone‘s eye—view as it cuts through the dusty terrain. From such a distance, we can just make out a new front fascia, now incorpora...

2021 Cadillac Escalade Premium Luxury Platinum First Drive Review: A Proper Flagship?

Cadillac’s Escalade SUV is a king-sized luxury luminary, and the debut of an all-new version goes beyond simple car introduction to full-scale cultural event. Now in its fifth generation, what was once a rebadged GMC Yukon has become a distinctively styled flagship, albeit one that still shares its basic mechanicals with that GMC as well as the Chevy Tahoe. But General Motors has worked hard to ensure its latest batch of full-size SUV triplets are fraternal rather than identical, an effort most apparent inside the Escalade’s decadent cabin. The New Escalade’s Interior Is Seriously Impressive We’ll get to the rest of the 2021 Escalade in a minute, but this rig really is all about its interior, a tech- and feature-dense cocoon that finally befits a six-figure luxury S...

2021 Ford Raptor Looks Ready to Take On Ram TRX in Latest Leak

The MotorTrend Truck of the Year-winning Ram 1500 TRX’s reign as the hottest truck for the 2021 model year may soon come to an end, as Ford continues to prep its third-generation F-150 Raptor. Now, F150Gen14.com‘s forum gives us a better clue about what to expect from the next Raptor—at least in regards to its styling. See all 16 photos Like its forebears, the 2021 F-150 Raptor’s mug and fenders see the most notable styling differences over Ford’s run-of-the-mill half-ton pickup. An illustration of the truck’s front end—presumably from Ford’s parts catalog—shows the upcoming Raptor maintains trim-specific cues such as a grille that trades the Blue Oval badge for distinct Ford lettering. Meanwhile, a new lower fascia evolves the style of the 2020 Rap...

Eureka! Dodge Adds Gold Rush to 2021 Challenger’s Color Palette

The Challenger is also offered in a number of vibrant colors such as Frostbite, Hellraisin, Sinamon Stick, TorRed, and F8 Green. All of these bright colors are inspired by Challengers of old, the latest of which is Gold Rush, a metallic gold color. The hue was formerly only available on the Challenger 50th Anniversary Edition but will now be available on select Challengers for 2021. If you want a Gold Rush-colored Chally, though, there’s a slight catch. You also need to settle for a Satin Black hood, roof, and trunk. Not exactly the worst tradeoff in the world (the black bits also help break up what otherwise might be an overabundance of gold-painted bodywork). Gold Rush is only available on Challenger T/A, T/A 392, SRT Hellcat, and SRT Hellcat Redeye models. Sorry, fans of both Gold...

Zero Labs Launches Modular, BYOB (Bring-Your-Own-Body) EV Platform for Classic Cars

Stick your head in the sand all you want, classic car fanatics—there’s a reckoning on the distant horizon. As much as we like to think the rising swell of both EV legislation and the sporadic bans on new vehicles powered by fossil fuels will not extend to our beloved classics, something’s gotta give. Now, we don’t believe a blanket ban on gas-powered cars both new and old is in the immediate future, considering the overwhelming majority of existing car and truck owners in this world cannot afford to upgrade to a shiny new EV—reasonably priced or otherwise—nor does the current charging infrastructure support such a drastic paradigm shift. Expect sales of gas-powered vehicles to be banned in some major metropolitan zones, but the ICE business to continue as usual in less po...

2021 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Adds Fresh Looks, Small Price Bump

As before, the Crosstrek Hybrid still comes in a single trim level. There is an optional $2,500 equipment package that includes a power-operated moonroof, a heated steering wheel, an in-dash navigation system, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system with a 432-watt amplifier. A mild refresh to the 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid adds a new fascia, which differentiates it subtly from its gas-only counterpart. The front end now sports a more wing-like set of bars flanking the grille badge and a prominent contrasting “blade” outboard of its foglights in the lower bumper. Frankly, it makes the regular 2021 Crosstrek’s front fascia and fender extensions look a little clumsy by comparison. What might make a bigger difference to drivers is the recalibrated springs and dampers—considering...
