Alfa Romeo was a monster of post-war racing on land, winning a number of what we’d now consider Formula 1 races with the Alfetta 158/159 powered by a very small-displacement, supercharged straight-eight engine. This car was monumentally successful at the hands of drivers like Juan Manual Fangio and Nino Farina. But, less well known to us car enthusiasts, this engine (and other motorsports engines from the company) also had very successful careers on the water. The Arno II, seen above, was powered by an Alfa 158 engine (and is parked next to its Grand Prix car relative). All told, the boats in this exhibit racked up 11 world records, six world championships, and a number of European and Italian championships. Alfa Romeo developed marine engines and supported race efforts for decades, ...
At the time of this writing, Lancia—one of the greatest automakers of all time, with a history of racing success and great driver’s cars—currently produces just one vehicle. The Lancia Ypsilon is a homely little hatchback that’s been on sale since 2011 and is powered by a range of eensy little engines, including a 0.9-liter inline-two. This situation comes after several years of parent company FCA foisting rebadged Chrysler products on Continental buyers, including the Lancia Thema (neé Chrysler 300). Such cynical badge jobs made a mockery of the brand’s heritage, but it didn’t have to be this way. At the 2003 Frankfurt Auto Show, the company showed off the Fulvia Concept, an homage to one of the company’s finest-ever enthusiast cars and a triumph of the era...
Ford’s rounded 1995 Explorer was still nearly a year away from launch in 1994, but the Blue Oval’s Power Stroke concept pickup gave clues to the company’s styling directive for the cars, trucks, and SUVs it planned to sell to consumers throughout the latter half of the 1990s. Besides showcasing the brand’s forthcoming design language, the Power Stroke housed Ford’s upcoming turbo-diesel 7.3-liter V-8 engine, which would soon make its way to production bearing the—wait for it—Power Stroke moniker. Despite its show-car status, the Power Stroke concept was surprisingly road-ready. Riding on a modified heavy-duty truck frame and featuring an interior cribbed from an F-Series pickup of the era, the truck’s only true conceptual elements lived on its yello...
The all-new 2021 Toyota Venza has a lot of balls to juggle. It’s the first Toyota SUV to be powered exclusively by a hybrid system, its design has to push the brand in a new direction without being offensive, and it’s being billed as the most luxurious SUV in Toyota’s lineup. So, how well is the Venza handling all of its newfound responsibilities? While its styling may not be for some, the new Venza isn’t what you’d call ugly. It’s also undeniably different from what Toyota is doing with the rest of its lineup lately, and it’s a sign of things to come for the marque. Looks are subjective, but we think the Venza does enough to stand out from the crowd without resorting to being outlandish or offensive. That’s the design ball up in the air, no ...
In an era where luxury midsize sedans are hitting the guillotine, Mercedes-Benz and Genesis are doubling down on the segment. Both automakers are bringing the best of their portfolios to make their midsize sedans—the E-Class and G80, respectively—more special. The Mercedes-Benz E-Class, known for its peaceful ride, elegant design, and comfortable cabin, has been a staple in the segment, and Mercedes has used its legacy to keep improving and raising the bar every time it has a chance. The new Genesis G80, on the other hand, is the rookie of the group. It arrives with confidence to enter a competitive segment that’s dominated by Germans, but the South Koreans have a master plan and brought the best engineers and designers from around the globe to build a proper luxury brand. Elegant mi...
“Korean design.” That phrase wouldn’t have conjured much of a mental picture in Americans a few years ago, but between the architecture and home aesthetics on display in the Oscar-winning movie Parasite and the great automotive design work Peter Schreyer has been overseeing at Hyundai Motor Group, awareness is up and Korean design is officially becoming a thing—and an interesting thing at that. Study the design of the 2021 Genesis G80, for example, and you’re unlikely to find many cues lifted from establishment competitors like the Audi A6/A7, BMW 5 Series, or Mercedes-Benz E-Class. And it’s not just the ginormous face-mask grille and ear-strap headlights. Inside, there’s a world-first 3-D instrument cluster display, a novel rotary-swipe knob infota...
If you get the feeling that major car makers have been collaborating with streetwear designers more than usual lately, you’d be right. Virgil Abloh recently teamed up with Gordon Wagner, Mercedes-Benz’s design honcho, to reimagine the classic G-Wagen. Now BMW has done something similar (albeit less drastic) with an icon of its own. Meet the 2021 BMW M4 Competition X Kith. Like Abloh’s Off-White, Kith is a streetwear brand known mostly for its footwear and men’s apparel. The man behind the brand, Ronnie Fieg, is both designer and BMW enthusiast. But instead of just setting to work on some new, BMW-inspired apparel, Fieg decided to try his hand at sprucing up the brand new 2021 BMW M4 Competition. While his changes don’t do much for the M4’s attention grab...
For 2021, Hyundai is giving Elantra buyers a more powerful alternative in the form of a new N Line trim. It has less competition than its Sport predecessor, too, now that the Honda Civic Si is on hiatus. Priced at a reasonable $25,095, the Elantra N Line just might be up to the task of winning over would-be Si buyers. See all 45 photos Under the hood, the N Line features a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine making 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with a standard six-speed manual transmission. If you opt for the six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, the price goes up to $26,195. To match the powertrain updates, Hyundai gives the N Line sportier suspension and steering tuning. It also gets larger front brake rotors for improved stopping performance. Cos...
Since arriving to our fleet six months ago, the 2020 BMW 228i Gran Coupe has been a faithful daily driver. From weekend food hunting to serving as my ride to (distanced) martial arts practice, the 228i has been up to the task. Recently, I did a 284-mile round trip to and from Thermal, California, to attend the BMW Performance Center’s car control class. The drive gave me a sense of what the 228i is like on road trips—and if you’re considering a 228i with the M Sport package, and you like long drives, you’ll want to read on. Just a few minutes into the trip, I realized that I was in for a bumpy two hours. The M Sport suspension, which is part of the M Sport package on the 228i and standard on the M235i, improves handling slightly but sacrifices comfort significantly. You f...
Time for your weekly dose of “what the heck?” But instead of originating in the darker reaches of the automotive web, this latest installment comes straight from one of the world’s most prestigious automotive brands: Bugatti. The French brand recently put up a photo of a (presumably) forthcoming vehicle’s taillights on its website with the caption “What if…?”, and we genuinely have no idea what sort of vehicle these lamps are attached to. Bugatti is no stranger to the world of insane concepts, though, and we would not be surprised if this image previews the brand’s next show car. Just look to Bugattis efforts in the late 1990s and its crazy concepts such as the EB 218 and the wildly styled—for its time—18/3 Chiron. These days Bugatti seems mo...
If you think the 2022 GMC Hummer EV looks pretty wild as it is, know that the design could have been even more dramatic. General Motors took to social media this week to show off some early sketches that influenced the electric pickup truck‘s final design. Just look at those massive tires. This imaginary set of rubber makes the truck look even more formidable, especially with all the extra ground clearance. This is not to say the production model doesn’t impress in this area—it comes standard with 35-inch tires and can accommodate rubber as tall as 37 inches. The sketch also reveals a bolder hood design and some seriously aggressive cladding. The back end looks particularly different than the final product in one of these sketches, taking a more rounded shape and adopting a uni...
Not one to shy away from special editions, Mini is introducing another unique vehicle to its lineup. The 2021 Mini Cooper 1499 GT is a very limited-edition car with a black and gold exterior, a dressed-up interior, and—surprisingly—a pretty decent price tag. The 1499 GT model pays homage to the Mini 1275 GT from 1969. While the original had a gold paint job and black side graphics, the 1499 GT reverses the color scheme. Its black paint job is complemented by a black grille, black door handles, black headlight rings, and black rings surrounding the Union Jack-motif taillights. It also gets the John Cooper Works styling package with special bumpers, side skirts, split level spoiler, and door entry plates. Topping it all off are 17-inch black wheels paired with all-season tires. See all 12 ph...
