FCA’s merger with France’s PSA hasn’t changed its grand plans for a complete revamp of Maserati. The 630-hp, mid-engine MC20 supercar is the first of an avalanche of new or redesigned Maserati models scheduled to be unveiled by 2025. While the MC20 is set to serve as the brand’s halo (with a drop-top Spider version joining the coupe in 2022), Maserati insiders hope the brand’s money-maker will be a new mid-size crossover SUV called the Grecale, which will share a lot of hardware with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The Grecale, which in true Maserati tradition is named after a wind (in this case, a north-easterly that blows across the Italian peninsula), launches in 2021 and is key to a 40 percent increase in total Maserati SUV sales by 2025, the brand’s global ...
That said, the base Air starts below $80,000. It’s unclear if this is before or after a destination charge, though. Keep in mind the Air qualifies for the full federal tax credit, which when factored into the equation, brings the price down to less than $72,500. The Tesla Model S no longer qualifies for this credit, and it starts at $76,190, including a $1,200 destination charge. We’re still awaiting full performance specs for the base Lucid Air, which goes on sale after the initial batch of higher-end Airs roll off the assembly line. Nevertheless, we know even the entry-level Air boasts the ability to add 300 miles of range in 20 minutes when plugged into a DC fast charger. Move up to the Touring, and you’re looking at a price of $95,000 before accounting for tax credits...
The normal temperature in Los Angeles on this particular date is 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Its record high was 102, set in 1955. Today it’s 111 (with 121 degrees recorded elsewhere in L.A. County). Call it global warming’s local warning. When my abode was built, its location of a mile from the Pacific Ocean meant you didn’t need air conditioning to stay comfortable. With indoor squatting at Starbucks nixed and in a perspiring panic, I’ve decamped to the spacious, air-conditioned back seat of an SUV in the driveway to chronicle my introduction to the zero-emission 2021 Lucid Air electric sedan. Life is the theater of the absurd. It seems humans are just 7.8 billion jeans-and-T-shirt-wearing frogs in a planet-sized pot of warming atmosphere who all keep forgetting what t...
The Lexus RC is one of those cars that’s easy to forget about. It’s not particularly popular and its design is somewhat polarizing. Lexus is hoping to bring the RC back to the top of consumer’s minds, though, with the reborn RC Black Line. Just like the previously available 2018 model, the 2021 Lexus RC Black Line benefits from orange and black accents throughout. But this time Lexus is also offering something a little extra. In order to add more appeal to the Black Line, Lexus has partnered with Zero Halliburton to create a bespoke set of luggage for the car. The luggage set features an Edge Lightweight 22-inch Continental Carry-on and a 26-inch Medium Travel Case. Halliburton is known for its high-quality travel bags and briefcases, and the Black Line’s stand...
After more than a decade on the market, the Nissan 370Z is finally retiring. In its place comes the 400Z. Or at least that’s what we expect Nissan to christen the new Z. Unlike today’s sports car, the upcoming 2023 Z’s digits are not expected to represent the displacement of its engine but instead its outright horsepower. Don’t worry purists, the new Z won’t abandon its history of packing six cylinders under its hood. Nor will it lose its third pedal option. See all 11 photos 2023 Nissan Z: Powertrain and Performance Anticipated to pack a stable of 400 horses, the upcoming 400Z is sure to have the power needed to properly compete with the likes of the Toyota Supra and the Porsche 718 Cayman sports coupes. Look for the new Z to rely on a twin-turboc...
The best thing about driving the Aston Martin DB5 Goldfinger Continuation? No, it’s not just playing with the gadgets—the revolving license plates, the machine guns, the bulletproof shield, and the rest of the 007 arsenal. It’s the fact that you’re driving a genuine 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that’s brand new from its Avon cross-ply tires up. OK, the machine guns don’t fire real ammo, it sprays water out the rear rather than oil, and you can’t get rid of a tiresome passenger with an ejector seat. But the Goldfinger Continuation is still the real deal. It’s a real Aston Martin, built in the same shop in Newport Pagnell, England, where fewer than 900 DB5s were built between 1963 and 1965, with components manufactured using original drawings and digital da...
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Virgil Abloh, he’s currently the Chief Executive Officer of Off-White, a streetwear brand that’s gained a ton of notoriety in recent years for their collaborations with major brands like Nike and Adidas. But today Abloh and Mercedes-Benz pulled the silk off of a different type of collaboration: a new take on the famed Mercedes G-Class. Project Geländewagen, as it is called, is essentially half art car, half race car—but the result is nothing like as beautiful as the BMW art cars of old. Abloh and Wagner have taken the G-Wagen to extremes in all areas. The exterior is entirely white, with a massively distressed look to it that, frankly, makes the car look like it’s been sitting in a barn for 30 years. The car itself sits...
Sick of having to drive your Pagani or Koenigsegg to your private trackside garage every time you want to take your closed-course-only Brabham BT62 hypercar for a spin? It appears the fine folks at Brabham have read all those angry letters and frustrated tweets, and if you have a cool £1.25 million (around $1.65 million) in your couch cushions, the Australian supercar firm now offers a roadworthy version of the BT62 to make that villa-to-track schlep seamless. This new street-legal weapon is called the BT62R, and while we did just insinuate it’s the first road-ready version of the BT62, that’s not exactly the full story. Despite the BT62’s singular focus on shredding world-class circuits such as Silverstone and Brands Hatch like wet tissue paper, a not-insignificant porti...
Car shoppers won’t bat an eye shelling out $50,000-plus for a luxury SUV. But for some reason, the idea of paying the same amount for a minivan can be a hard pill to swallow. Once loaded up with options, today’s minivans can easily get up to $50K or more—and believe it or not, they sell. The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica’s new Pinnacle trim level is the latest to push the minivan pricing envelope with its starting price just under $55,000. The Pinnacle slots above the previous range-topper, the already classy Limited trim, and is priced accordingly at $54,885. For comparison, the most expensive Honda Odyssey, the 2021 Odyssey Elite, starts at $48,940. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet for the all-hybrid 2021 Toyota Sienna lineup, but the outgoing 2020 Sienna Limited Premiu...
The Ford Falcon doesn’t get the respect it deserves. There wouldn’t be a Ford Mustang at all without the Falcon donating its underpinnings. A small, honest car with an economy mindset; it amazed Ford brass by selling like hotcakes after launch. It even, in a roundabout way, formed the foundation for a long-running Australian muscle car scene. But the first-generation Falcon wagon simply wasn’t that exciting. Blame the fact it was powered by a pair of miserly (and rather miserable) inline-sixes and held back by frumpy styling. That is until Carrozzeria Ghia of Turin got their hands on the Blue Oval’s bird. See all 37 photos Yes, the wild-looking fastback you’re looking at is actually Falcon-based. Ghia had originally played with a similar idea on a Fi...
Ever since humans figured out how to ditch the horse, we’ve pointed our horseless carriages—or Jeeps, trucks, bikes, trikes, whatever—at the most impassible, inhospitable, and downright unforgiving terrain we can stub a toe on. Back in the first half of the 20th century, a lot of four-wheeling’ wasn’t done out of recreation, but out of necessity, considering the world wasn’t nearly as paved as it is now. Since then, we’ve turned the idea of tackling the unknown into an international sport, a leisurely pastime, and an integral part of the world of motoring enthusiasts. That’s why we dredged up some choice images of old 4x4s, trucks, Jeeps, SUVs, and buggies getting dirty in the rocks, mud, and sand—all before the advent of the digital camera. We pick...
Like all of us here at MotorTrend, you’re probably bummed that much of the summer’s car activities have been canceled. It seems like every day we hear about more events being canceled, but one event we’ve been watching very carefully is the 24th Annual Cruisin’ the Coast event, held each year on the Redneck Riviera—that’s the south coast of Mississippi for the uninitiated. According to the folks at Cruisin’ the Coast, this year’s 2020 event is still on for October 4-11, and if you feel like firing up your hot rod and coming down to join the party, registration will be on location. Early bird registration closed August 15, and it costs just $90 for the whole shebang, including a chance to win Cruisin’ the Coast’s customized 1932 For...
