2021 Honda Odyssey First Drive: Credit Where Credit’s Due

Look, we get it—image is important. If that’s why you want an SUV and not a minivan, so be it. Fashion is indeed arbitrary, and as we cruised the chic boulevards of Los Angeles in the 2021 Honda Odyssey, we couldn’t help but feel anonymous. But if you desire an SUV rather than a minivan because you believe the former to be more practical, check your math. Unlike style, things like space, versatility, and practicality can be measured. And in those areas, the Odyssey is brilliant. Amidst the sea of crossover SUVs on L.A. ‘s byways, we knew our van had life-simplifying features those vehicles could only dream of. So when it comes to choosing which family vehicle may be right for you, the hardest part just may be getting over yourself. What’s New for 2021 See all 56 pho...

NHTSA Makes Recall Notifications Easier With SaferCar App

For those who don’t read up on news about their car online can at least hope to get something in the mail regarding a recall for their vehicle. But that takes time and sometimes recalls can be a matter of life and death, as it was in the case of the Takata airbag fiasco that affected Toyota, Ford, BMW, and more than a dozen other manufacturers (rendering more than 42 million cars unsafe to drive). Luckily, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration just released a free app that makes figuring out recalls easier than ever. SaferCar will keep track of all your cars and alert you when a recall has popped up for one of them. Using the app is as simple as downloading it either the Apple AppStore or the Google Play Store, entering the cars you own (you can go either by year, m...

2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost First Look: The New Ghost Ain’t for Busters

The Rolls-Royce Ghost is the ideal car, the company claims, for the globetrotting ultra-capitalist too cool to be chauffeured around town. Fully redesigned for 2021, the new Ghost has been honed to cater to this clientele even more successfully, translating feedback from last-generation Ghost owners into refinements for this next-generation model. While the Ghost’s re-imagination is clearly more evolutionary than revolutionary, there are meaningful changes we hope will address some of our issues with this otherwise superlative automobile. See all 22 photos 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost Chassis: A Luxurious Architecture Like the Phantom and Cullinan before it, the Ghost moves to the “Architecture of Luxury” aluminum space frame. It’s a highly sophisticated chassis...

Inside, there are optional leather seats and Granite Crystal accents. Entry-level Sport models are now available with the Selec-Trac two...

Nissan Z Proto Debuts on September 15, Here’s How to Watch It Live

Finally, Nissan will show off the next-generation Z sports car in the coming weeks. Well, at least in prototype form. The Nissan Z Proto will make its official debut on September 15. Nissan teased the car in a new video, but we already have a pretty good idea of what it will look like. An older video flaunted the Z’s sexy and streamlined design, including its long hood and rounded haunches. The car features distinct throwback cues such as a C-pillar-mounted Z badge, sloping rear glass, and round headlamps that recall the design of the car’s earlier generations. It’s still unclear what will power the new Z. The car may get a 4.0-liter V-6 as rumors of a 400Z badge would suggest. Or it could pack the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 that powers Infiniti’s Red Sport 400 models...

From the Archives: Jeep Wagoneer vs. Ford Ranchero vs. GMC Pickup vs. Dodge A-108

The current state of the world has us thinking about getting away from it all. This story from our September 1968 issue, featuring a Jeep Wagoneer, Ford Ranchero, GMC pickup, and Dodge camper, helped us scratch that itch. Hopefully it does the same for you–Ed.  Something’s wrong. The moment you find yourself and four other virile, red-blooded males of unquestionable romantic heritage sitting innocently in the Corkscrew Saloon 187 feet below sea level at midnight in Death Valley discussing epistemology, theoretical physics and the insidious road to Beatty, Nevada, you know, just know, that this neat little progressive civilization of ours screwed up somewhere along the way. Off-the-road? Remote? Bull. There we were, cursed with a four-wheel-drive Jeep Wagoneer, a rugged For...

2020 Honda Civic Si HPT Sedan Long-Term Update: Getting to Know You

We established in the introductory story that I don’t seem to drive a lot of Civics despite my job being to drive all the things, so the short-long-term 2020 Honda Civic Si and I are still getting acquainted. So far, so good. Some of my colleagues have been down on this generation of Civic Si because it has a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine tuned up from everyday Civi spec, not a purpose-built, naturally aspirated, high-rpm screamer like past generations of Si. As much as I love a good naturally aspirated engine, this doesn’t bother me, mostly because I never formed an emotional attachment to those old Si models. Maybe it was lack of sufficient exposure, but I’m not mad about this engine. Not that folks’ criticisms are nonsense. The engine is laggy, like...

SUV or Sedan? 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe or 2020 BMW X1?

We’ve been living with the 2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe for nearly half a year now, and the pint-sized sedan has been put through our daily routines and spontaneous adventures. While the 228i Gran Coupe was out on a road trip, I spent time with one of its platform siblings, the X1, to answer a frequently asked question today’s car shopper might have: What do you gain and give up by switching to an SUV? BMW X1 or BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: How Practical? For a small sedan with a swoopy roofline, the BMW 228i Gran Coupe is practical for a single person or a couple. The 15.1-cubic-foot trunk easily accommodates a week’s worth of groceries and a couple medium-sized pieces of luggage. However, you need to fold the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat back for bulky items. An underfl...

Ram Dishes on the Differences Between the 1500 TRX and TRX Concept

It’s finally here in all its glory, Ram’s long-awaited, much-anticipated contender to the Ford Raptor’s OEM high-speed off-road throne, the 2021 Ram 1500 TRX. But for fans of the Ram truck brand, or of off-roading in general, the TRX has been in the works for years now, ever since the original concept truck was unveiled in 2016. We caught up with the 2021 Ram TRX’s exterior-design lead, Mike Gillam, ahead of the TRX’s unveiling to see what has changed in the intervening four years. Gillam is the perfect interview subject for our quest, as he was part of the team that designed, developed, and built the original TRX concept. He also led the production TRX’s exterior design. What changed from the original TRX concept to the production 2021 Ram 1500 TRX, in ...

Surprise! A Smaller Grille Dramatically Improves the 2021 BMW 4 Series

The 2021 BMW 4 Series is arguably one of the most polarizing cars to have come out in the last few years. And by polarizing, we mean that pretty much everyone on the internet hates it. Honestly, we can’t blame the masses for turning their backs on the 4’s nose given BMW’s famous—and typically handsome—kidney grille has been turned into a set of proverbial buck teeth. Fortunately, there are a lot of really talented people with access to Photoshop. One such person is Instagram user @Spdesignsest (or Siim Designs), and he has given us a number of possible front-end fixes to the BMW M440i. To our eyes, these are some of the best reinterpretations of the new Bimmer two-door we’ve seen so far. See all 15 photos The grille has been shortened to a much more accept...

Instead of the Axe, 2022 Kia Stinger Survives With Refresh, New Engine

Recently we were armchair quarterbacking the theory that the Kia Stinger was not long for this world. Even though the Stinger itself is a great car, lackluster sales are a sign that potential buyers aren’t as fired up as us critics. But we’re happy to report that, for now at least, we’ve been proven wrong. Kia just announced a slew of updates to make the Stinger both more handsome and more upscale. Plus, the sedan is getting a more powerful four-cylinder engine. For starters, the exterior of the car gets some slight revisions. Up front the tiger nose grille gets wider—a trend Kia has been executing throughout its lineup these days—and the headlights get a slight redesign to give them a sharper look. There’s a new tail light design at the back, and the rear-facing tu...

CX-3-Oh-My: 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo Coming Soon With 250 HP

Citing an early order guide, CarsDirect reports a 2021 Mazda CX-30 Turbo is set to follow the Mazda 3 2.5 Turbo, packing the same turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder found in that car, the CX-9 and CX-5 crossovers, and the Mazda 6 midside sedan. The 2.5-liter turbo makes 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on 93-octane fuel (or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular) in the 2021 Mazda 3, and we expect similar numbers from the CX-30 Turbo. That amount of power would represent a significant bump over the regular CX-30, which makes 186 horsepower and 186 lb-ft from a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter inline-four. See all 41 photos A Mazda spokesman declined to comment on the report, which also says production of the CX-30 Turbo begins in November. Mazda began building the standard 2021 CX-30 in July...
